when you want to protect someone and they’re trying to be kind all the time and minimize their own feelings and they still get hurt eventually you end up at the conclusion that that kindness is a waste of time and energy. and the answer is to fire back in the way that everything else has been for so long and act as a conduit for all that spite and pain they’ve pushed down inside themselves. this does not often work. but it is a logic that comes up again and again

Ok I’ve been thinking about something for a while...

Why does ???% think it’s ok to use his powers on people?

When mob meets ???% he has found his “power.” The “true” Shigeo Kageyama. But we know they are both equally Mob. ???% is using his powers to be destructive because he believes those powers are what makes him true. But why would any version of mob want to hurt someone? Is it because he refused to learn from Reigen when mob first went to see him?

But at the end, ???% finally listens to Reigen. After all that, Reigen is the reason both sides finally accept each other.

My guess would be, that it tells us readers that everyone has a negative side to them which has no qualms of hurting others to protect oneself. It is part if the primal instinct of self-preservation, and even the kindest people, such as Mob, have it. They just keep it restrained, very restrained.

In Mob's case, this natural part of him scared him so much (due to the level of destruction it is capable of) that he subconsciously buried it so deep and distanced himself from it so much that he stopped seeing that part as himself - and started viewing it as this scary alien entity in his mind.

This is why Reigen's words (when he finally decides to pay attention to what's going on in the kid's head) carry so much weight because he tells a truth, a truth we don't have to be afraid of - anyone could happen to have two parts to themselves (if they for whatever reson start suppressing a part like Mob did) and that this is nothing supernatural which cannot be overcome. When a person is ready, they can and should accept the fact that everyone has negative sides instead of running away pretending they don't exist; because once a person accepts this, only then can they really start keeping the negative sides truly in check, when they understand them.

And that's what ???% did want - to be understood and accepted as part of Mob - a scary part yes, but ultimately a part that Mob can control.

Not as a foreign entity that Mob doesn't want anything to do with.

This makes a bunch of sense.

Mob has an astounding amount of self-control. I remember reading the manga and thinking, how does he just treat Teru, Onigawara, Reigen, Minori, and a dozen other people who have hurt him almost like nothing bad ever happened? Isn’t he mad? (Doesn’t he just want to go ape- anyway)

We know that mob copes with his overwhelming amount of stress and trauma by repressing it and shoving it out of sight essentially. But that doesn’t make it go away. He’s got to put it somewhere, or rather... give it to “someone”. I saw ???% as the side of Mob who is the recipient of all that pain and fear, all of Mob’s selfish desires that he won’t let himself act on. He feels guilty for being upset with people or hurting them (even if they deserve it) and the more he internally villainized those negative aspects of himself, the more he tried to separate them from himself, ultimately coming to think of it (subconsciously) as a separate entity altogether.

???% is the part of Mob who has been stewing on trauma for years. He is as much “Mob” as the Mob we always see is. He’s just a hurt kid who feels betrayed and scared and frustrated about not being able to do what he wants. He’s the part of Mob that is selfish, that defends himself at the expense of others. He is what Mob doesn’t like about himself and therefore thinks others will find unlovable as well. But he’s still Mob. He’s still just a kid, lashing out because he’s being broken by this huge weight.

Mob can’t heal until he accepts ???% as a part of him, accepts that all that messed up stuff happened and it’s okay to be upset about it, and that doesn’t make him any less worthy of love. After showing compassion to people he actually despised, Mob’s ultimate act of love was, finally, toward himself.
