Over the last half century the population of the world has exploded. At the time of writing there are seven billion people on the planet and this number is projected to grow in a short period of time.
Of all of the environmental challenges facing the planet today overpopulation is one that sometimes slips under the radar. Issues like pollution, climate change and water shortages all seem to take precedence, but overpopulation is one of the main contributors to many other environmental issues.
Overpopulation will place great demands on resources and land, leading to widespread environmental issues in addition to impacting global economies and standards of living.
The issue is compounded by the difficulty in providing solutions for this problem and misunderstanding of the causes and effects of overpopulation.
Here we will cover both causes and effects of overpopulation in order for you to have a more informed view of the risks that come with it.
ENOUGH ALREADY TOO MANY PEOPLE, TOO MANY PROBLEMS
The Causes
PovertyÂ
Poor Contraceptive UseÂ
Child LaborÂ
Reduced Mortality RatesÂ
Fertility TreatmentÂ
Immigration
The Effects
Lack of WaterÂ
Lower Life ExpectancyÂ
ExtinctionÂ
Resource ConsumptionÂ
Increased Intensive FarmingÂ
Faster Climate ChangeÂ
As long as there are homeless and hungry itâs selfish to make more people.Â
What changes will you make?
- Get charged up with renewables
- Green your commute
- Use energy wisely â save money, too!
- Divest from fossil fuels
- Consume less, waste less, enjoy life more
âWe use too much, too much of it is toxic and we donât share it very well. But thatâs not the way things have to be. Together, we can build a society based on better not more, sharing not selfishness, community not division.â ~ The Story of Stuff

Global warming is Human-caused
ATMOSPHERIC CARBON DIOXIDE CONCENTRATIONS are higher today than at any time in at least the past 650,000 years. They are about 35% higher than before the industrial revolution, and this increase is caused by human activities, primarily the burning of fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, as are methane, nitrous oxide, water vapor, and a host of other trace gases. They occur naturally in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases act like a blanket for infrared radiation, retaining radiative energy near the surface that would otherwise escape directly to space. An increase in atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and of other greenhouse gases augments the natural greenhouse effect; it increases the radiative energy available to Earthâs surface and to the lower atmosphere. Unless compensated for by other processes, the increase in radiative energy available to the surface and the lower atmosphere leads to warming.
