And so Beguile Thy Sorrow - Hapax

The next fic I bound was And so Beguile Thy Sorry (a quite from Titus Andronicus) by Hapax (@wordsthativelost). I have been a Shakespeare fan since my Granny and mum read me the plays and took me to the theatre. This fic was very fun to read, bit of intrigue/mystery and the development of the relationship between the two main characters. I used https://acestronautical.github.io/bookcover-js/ to create the spine. I can highly recommend it if you want to make Penguin book style covers.

I made this to have a break between the volumes for Descent into Perdition. It was a great way to still get to make something within the hobby but didn't need a lot of time. Hopefully Rudy (the dog) enjoys the notebook too. I sent this off to Emmy as a thank you for a pothos clipping she sent me (and a few other goodies).

This was my first time binding an incredibly long fic, Descent into Perdition by @dreamsofspike-blog. This is one fic separated into 4 volumes. I sent this off to a mutual friend because I wanted to practice this bind before trying again with the final copy. For the repeat of this fic I am definitely going to split this into 5 volumes which I think will make it a little more manageable.

I learnt a lot from this run, volume 4 ending up the best but the others aren't too bad. It's easy for me to focus on the imperfections, especially after all the time I spend looking at them and I do want them to be perfect. However, I think I have to focus on the good things and be proud of how far I have come in my book binding journey.

For those in the Good Omens fandom I matched each volume to associated colours for each of the characters. Blue for Aziraphale and then black (for those who have read the fic you'll know why), purple for Gabriel and red for Crowley. The symbols on the front of the book match certain items or themes within the book.

I love being able to wrap the packages ready to send off to the recipient and add little personal touches here and there. I hope it brings a smile to my friend's face when they get to open each package.

I've just ordered a finishing press from Affordable Binding Equipment, I can't wait to get it so I can properly round and back the books. I've been using two wooden planks with some clamps and I just haven't been able to achieve the tension I need to round and back properly.

A few notes for future me:

Don't glue the spines if you aren't going to back them until later (much later) it makes it a lot harder -> hairdryers are your friend

Glue your endpapers closer to the end of the board otherwise you end up with that gap

If trimming the ends take into account that the board will then be shorter

Sometimes you make mistakes...make sure you have enough materials to redo bits and pieces

I think these volumes could've benefited from zigzag endpapers but maybe that is something to add next time

The latest bind - The Harvest of Uruk by Aethelflaed It is getting sent to the author. I love the process of binding but don't necessarily need to keep the end product. So I love binding them for the author and sending them out into the world. Every bind I have been adding a new skill and this one was creating chapter headings and more decorative texts. The photos don't pick up on it but I love how the gold foil leaves a texture on the cover, slightly indented so when you run your fingers over it you can feel the words.

I fell in love with the fic Liquid Gold by @sodiumazideandothertoxins (with art by many talented artists) and I kept rereading it, it's a gentle fic with the ineffables (human au) falling in love. I wanted to have a paperback copy and so it was my first personal bind. I reached out to Sodium and I also got to bind a copy for them and compiled it with a few of their shorter fics too, I highly recommend all of them!! I loved the process of choosing the style of the cover, the collaboration with them to create this book and sending it off in the mail. Thank you for this opportunity.

For a friend who is passing through and we made friends through the Good Omens fandom

These two binds are by Edosian Orchids 901 (Open Arms and Face Value), I can highly recommend the fics.

We both sought the authors permission and soon I will bind a copy for Edosian.

It was my first time using HTV and I wasn't 100% happy with the result, mainly the glue that kinda shifts around the transfer but I think with practice I will get better.

What I was really happy with is the way the snake goes around the cover and looks really interesting.

My friend wanted it black on black so it was hard to capture the detail but in person it looks subtle but catch it in the right light and it looks impressive.

The end paper was from a local paper shop I went a little bit crazy in, bought a lot of paper and was excited to use it in this project.

My next project is a custom notebook for another friend and a handful of fics for various authors.

All the fics I've bound I've sought author's permission and in most cases sent a copy of the book to the author.
