It is time to rethink city life and how we connect, create, or relax as urbanites. To reinvent the spaces we can share, but make our own. Find out about how MINI Living is doing this and more through projects like our three installations at London Design Festival 2016.
Challenge yourself to reimagine the purpose of public space. As part of London Design Festival, thousands of visitors were given the opportunity to interact with three installations that connected urban dwellers with creative solutions in the form of intimate oases in the public sphere.
Using the philosophy of ‘shinrin yoku’, or ‘forest bathing’, viewers were removed from the hustle and bustle of Shoreditch to participate in new and exciting uses of “third spaces”. Whether at the Create, Connect, or Relax installations, guests could catch a glimpse into the future of city life.
Inspired by the Japanese concept of ‘shinrin yoku’ or forest bathing, the three MINI LIVING “Forests” installations, designed by Asif Khan for London Design Festival, allow you to remove yourself from the concrete jungle into a green escape. The forest atmosphere at each space changes what you hear, smell, and feel.
The Create Space’s ambiance fosters a new sense of creativity and productivity for the modern city dweller. Flexible furnishing arrangements and an abundance of greenery make it an ideal location to collaborate and create. With the unexpected pairing of Wi-Fi, electrical outlets, and immersive foliage – it’s a refreshing new style for meetings, presentations, and pitches.
Today our collaboration with Asif Khan; MINI Living “Forests” opens at London Design Festival. Our three installations in Shoreditch allow city dwellers in London the opportunity to detach from everyday living, and reconnect to the urban sphere.
Check out the Connect Space, the modern approach to a meeting space. The large table forms a centrepiece and focal point; providing a central place for friends to meet whether spontaneously or preplanned. The plants surrounding the installation foster a forest ambience, providing an enclosure of intimacy that heightens the intense communication experience.
Debuting at the London Design Festival 2016, the MINI Living ‘Forests’ installation explores three interpretations of “spaces between spaces”. The design of the three spaces uses plants to improve city living on #YourSideofTown.
“My response to the theme is inspired by the Japanese concept of ‘shinrin yoku’, which literally means ‘forest bathing’. It means every sense switches to absorb the forest atmosphere, what you hear, what you smell, even the feeling underfoot. On another level, we use plants as a tool to assert our personal space at its boundary with public space, whether on our desk at the office or at the perimeter of our home. The project brings these two ideas together for visitors to experience new sensations within the city,” says designer Asif Khan.

“We are obsessed with stripes, and for the MINI FLUID FASHION Sweatshirt we wanted to combine them with our motto, ‘Everyday I wear SUNNEI’. Which simply means you wear clothes that express who you are, that you’re confident with your style, without caring too much about trends.” Loris Messina and Simone Rizzo of SUNNEI combine precious materials, symmetry and personal passion when creating their fashion collection.

Featuring a sunny al-fresco luncheon for designers and honoured guests, the MINI FLUID FASHION space warmly welcomed the fashion-forward visitors of Pitti Uomo 90 in Florence, Italy. On display at the pop-up venue was the gender-fluid MINI Sweatshirt, interpreted by five international designers, presenting an array of patterns, colours, and conceptual statements.
