i feel like we need to stop giving the idea that visualising humberts perspective is bound to make people root for him a pass (and on the flipside that the 1997 movie is a good adaptation because it just replicates humberts gaze). it's an uncreative and unfaithful way to adapt lolita, yes, but if we were to HONESTLY 1:1 visualize what humbert is eroticizing in the novel (which, crucially, the 1997 movie does NOT) that would still creep any normal person out.
if showing a man lusting over the way a childs face looks after sobbing, the smell of a childs unwashed hair, the dirt on a childs jeans, the tape stuck to her toes seems normal to you and would make you root for that man getting to have sex with said child? if seeing that on screen would arouse you? you should seek professional help asap.
none of those things are in the 1997 movie because that one was carefully calibrated in every aspect to be erotically appealing to a mainstream straight male audience and put as much of the blame for the abuse on dolly as possible. but humbert doesn't want a 1.70 teen with curves actively making sexual advances towards him he wants a CHILD. a dirty, ignorant, naive, crying child.

We are the Anas family, residents of northern Gaza, specifically in the Shujaiya area. In the first week of the war, we fled our home because everyone considered our home to be in a dangerous area. We moved to the Rimal area, specifically in the middle of Gaza. There, we received the news that our home, which contained all our beautiful memories, was bombed. Suddenly, it was gone!!! Just thinking that your home, which you worked hard on and built from scratch and took a lot of your life, was gone in less than a second ! After a while, we left the sands to the Al-Zawaida area because of the heavy shelling. We stayed there for about two weeks, and then the terrorist army asked us to go to Rafah. We actually fled for the fourth time to Rafah and stayed there for two months, some of the most difficult days of our lives, as there was no way or means to live a normal life. 😔😔 After that, because of the invasion of Rafah, we moved to Deir al-Balah. Now, we are in very difficult and oppressive circumstances.
We are asking you with all shame to support and stand by us in these difficult circumstances that everyone knows because we lost our home, our work and any stable source of income. Thank you all.
