Doesn't really help outside of Japan that AKB and associated groups have doubled down on the more saccharine traditional idol sound for the main singles, b-side tracks don't count. Inside Japan too, if you look at Keya's rise in recent years. It's really time AKB got back into the Uza/River sort of modern sounding songs instead of the same old same old. The long term folks that buy year in year out without fail aren't going anywhere(thoughI guess they might, if things don't change)

I… would disagree with you a little on that. 

Yes, I do think we need a few more modern-pop A-sides under our belt. Increase it to maybe 2 a year. Teacher Teacher and NO WAY MAN were a good start. That said, even though I think we should experiment a bit, I still feel we have to come back to do what we do best: traditional idol tunes, bubblegum pop and feel-good tracks. To be honest, I haven’t had any major problems with what 48G has been putting out for A-sides so far the past couple of years. ‘Sentimental Train’, ‘#Sukinanda’, ‘LOVE TRIP’ and ‘Halloween Night’ were all phenomenal A-sides, in my opinion. Not forgetting the sister groups too; ‘Boku Datte Naichau yo’ was a fitting send-off for Yamamoto Sayaka, NGT48′s done some fantastic work with their A-sides, and STU48′s ‘Kaze wo Matsu’ was well worth the wait. 

I know how successful Keyakizaka46 is, but I really don’t want us to go all the way down that route. One anarcho-pop idol group with an edgelord for a Center is enough for me. Let Keyakizaka46 do its thing, don’t fight with them.

Just a personal opinion but when I think of AKB48, as the mother group of the 48 groups, I think of experimental music. Kinda like how SNSD was the top gg of experimental music in their prime and I like to think AKB48 was following that same path in some respect.

Yeah Teacher Teacher and NO WAY MAN were experimental even if I still kind of hate Teacher Teacher, but returning to melodies that don’t really work isn’t good either.

Sentimental Train, #Sukinanda or LOVE TRIP is not really bubblegum pop anyway. Halloween Night is retro pop at best, with the disco melodies and everything. Boku Datte Naichau yo was nice and energetic but felt weird for NMB48 just like a lot of their choices lately. STU48 and NGT48′s singles are nice and different from the feel of everything else the others are putting out.

Personally, I feel as since STU48 and NGT48 are fresher then the other groups their songs don’t feel as stale as the older sisters. Maybe it’s a mind over matter thing.

If anything AKB48′s B-sides are getting better while their A-sides are suffering from recycling. I mean High Tension was ok but I loved Seijun Tired, Shoot Sign was a mess but Dare no Koto wo Ichiban Aishiteru? was amazing, I loved the whole NegoMochi single, #SukiNanda was boring to me but I enjoyed all the other songs, I hated Sentimental Train then again I didn’t find one song on that single that I liked.

I’m NOT saying copy Keykai, just saying the songs should always be as good as Keykai, even if their not the same genre or style. AKB48 is the mother group they should be able to handle any concept/song/dance whatever but the company doesn’t think so and just gives them the same songs with a different face. [P.S. This is just my opinion, I don’t disagree with as a whole.]
