“It’s obvious Harry Potter was a hero. It’s obvious I’m just some weird little freak. It’s obvious that you are the one manipulating me and you stole my butterfly. I’m not going home. I’m going to hang out with my friends.”

“You’re not a freak. Who called you that? Tell me and I’ll go have a talk with them.” It was hard for her to see Oliver as a grown up and not just her baby brother, even if she knew she would have to get used to that. “That’s not fair. You know I’m not trying to manipulate you. I just want  you to be safe.”

“I’ll check after the party. Eleven is still lucky enough.” The more his sister tried to make him leave, the more determined he was to stay. “How do you know? Did you ask his side?”

“Please, just go home.” Minnie looked at him pleading. She couldn’t tell him why, she knew he’d want to stay, but that was exactly why she couldn’t risk it. He just had to trust her. “Because I know. It’s obvious. I don’t need to ask his side. If you let him in he’s going to try to manipulate you.”

“Lara and Jonathan Marks? Huh, learn something new every day.” He tried not to look too intrigued, but it was definitely something he wanted to ask Lara about later. Minnie’s reminder about Jon killing Lucy’s cousin caused a grimace, but not because he had forgotten. “Yeeeah,” he stretched the syllable out and looked away, uncomfortable. “She was in a coma for months, right? That kind of seems like a gray area, you know?”

“You’d do good staying away from both of them.” She scoffed, disdain obvious in her tone and expression. Even if the whole thing with her little brother hadn’t happened, she knew she wouldn’t like either of them. “I think it’s very black and white. Just because she couldn’t defend herself didn’t mean it’s not murder.”

“There were twelve when I got here.” Minnie was using the tone she did when she was trying to baby him. He’d heard that cue enough to pick up on it. It was different than if she were trying to humor him. She was protecting him from something. “I’m staying here. Why do you want me to go home? Is it Jon? Jon is my friend, Minnie. Or I want him to be. He is me. We both have lies told about us. We were made to be monsters because we know the world needs to change and we’re spirit users. We’re misunderstood.”

“I am pretty sure I saw one lying around by the kitchen...You should go and check.” It was a blatant lie, but the best she could come up with. Minnie couldn’t have Oliver at risk again. He was her little brother, it was her job to protect him and make sure he’s safe. “Jonathan Marks is not your friend Ollie. He’s manipulative and dangerous. You’re misunderstood, they treated you unfairly, but he got what he deserved. He’s not a good person.”

“I’m confused. Are you implying you’re also in Azkaban in this scenario? I hope you aren’t in any trouble. I know the Ministry has it out for your family, ever since your brother dared speak truth to the masses. They’ve wronged you nearly as badly as they misrepresent me.”

“In case that wasn’t clear, I’m implying making the way for visiting hours, just so I can see you rot behind bars.” She rolled her eyes at him. It was obvious what he was trying to do. “You and I are not on the same side. We never will be.”

“I had twelve butterflies in my hair so it was even. Now I lost one. Eleven is a prime number and prime numbers are unlucky. There are forty-four butterflies on my jacket and eleven is a factor of forty-four. Does that cancel out the bad luck?”

“I think you should go home and check if you lost it there. You don’t want to be unlucky right?” She just wanted him to go home so he wouldn’t get hurt. She was fighting alongside Roxanne tonight no matter what.

“I’m a dickhead and you were attracted to me when I was even more of one. I never murdered anyone that you know about, but still, point to me. What does he have to do with Junior splitting? I thought that was Lara or the aurors and the Ministry.”

“Please, don’t remind me. I’m trying to block that out.” She teased him, trying to focus on that rather than her anger at Jon. It wasn’t working too well. “Who do you think Lara was working with? The two of them were a package deal. Need I remind you that he literally murdered your ex girlfriend’s cousin?”

“Does it sound insincere if I say I am especially glad you made it tonight? I think  those words have come out of my mouth too much in the past hour. I’m not trying to come across as political. It’s a true statement for so many people.”

“Well, I’m not glad to see you.  Unless it would be behind bars in Aszkaban.” Now that was something she’d love to see. He deserved to rot in hell after what happened with her brother.

“Yes, that’s me, wracked with intense guilt over the nothing I have done to your family,” she deadpanned. “I hope you were at least cooperative with the auror that interviewed you about the attack. You have been interviewed, haven’t you?”

“You haven’t done anything to stop it while it was happening either.” At least according to her memory which might be biased. “I refused to be interviewed. I have nothing to say to aurors.”

He honestly did not expect her to agree, but he doesn’t waste a moment being surprised. “It’s the lady’s choice. I care for the company, not where we go.”

Minnie didn’t know why she said yes. It was a spur of the moment decision.  She hadn’t spent too much time with Olivier in a one on one setting before, but she was sure it would be fine. “There’s this muggle bar I like. Not to far from here.”

“Well, if she said you had to get it, then that means she believes there’s a time and place in your future when you’d need your hat. If she’s a Seer, or has Seer ancestry, that means she probably really can tell exactly what people do and don’t need.” An overstatement, obviously, since prophecies really could be so subjective and too difficult for even the wisest of Seers to decipher sometimes.

“I wouldn’t read that much into it. Seers aren’t known for being particularly reliable with their predictions.”

“I’m capable of making my own decisions and I’m not begging. All I was asking is if you think it looked good. Because if you do like it, it’s a definite sign for me to throw it in the trash.”

“It’s not in my name, but if you mean isn’t it odd that there were mass invitations signed ‘anonymous friend’ that read like recruitment letters if you could wade your way through the pretension, then yeah. It’s clearly some kind of trap. Big neon trap. I’m going.”

“if you’re going, I’m going.” Even if it didn’t turn out to be a trap after all, strength in numbers was always an asset. Minnie was prepared for a fight if it came to it and she knew Roxanne was too. Everything about this made the red flags go off in her head.
