i managed to make one men’s football rpf related piece of content yayy! the little guys are harry kane, jude bellingham, djed spence and anthony gordon.
it was so exciting to see so much football fanart on art instagram/twitter! and some of my old footy art seems to be getting notes here again (thank you!)… but what matters most to me is that my best friend’s mom found my old haaland fanart and liked it!
i’m sad that there isn’t as much hype from the nerdy artist community for like, club football or the women’s world cup even. it’s not just this one event with all the spice, it’s just the one that the straight male masses who are either high on nationalism or gambling or both get most worked up over. the narratives and drama can be thrilling and sometimes even poetic all year every year so there’s always so much potential for cool fanart. i guess the sportmost of us gets invested in is f1 (i dont know anything about f1), it makes sense though probably since, oil money? (again, i dont know anything about f1, but gas makes car go vromm?) :’)
but then i wonder what good comes out of using this kind of media to express our artistic talents through. i felt a sense of community connecting to football fans on tumblr and irl. i loved footy fic on ao3 for the exploration of the obviously romantic side of sports that seems to be taboo to speak about in mainstream discourse. yet i wonder how much fan culture makes it easier to overlook the abusive, exploitative aspects of the culture and institutions that govern elite sports such as football.
i bet a small percentage of people who got into the football hype for this world cup will go on to be longer term fans, the way that i became a fan after the men’s euros in 2021. i suppose theoretically, the positive is that getting more progressive fans, from communities that in the past few decades weren’t thetradiional target audience of sports, into the fanbase is only a good thing! i don’t know. i’m rambling because … maybe i’m still a bit emotional after england got knocked out and we seemed to have a good chance with a good squad… :’)
