well yes, pedophilia being used as a synonym for predator is a big issue, what about the completely wrong use of the word grooming that keeps going around?

grooming is a specific type of abuse involving manipulating a vulnerable for your own gain, usually for sexual reasons. this term has nothing to do with age, though it IS usually targeted towards minors.

people love to use the term grooming as a catch-all for adult and minor relationships, when not every relationship is grooming. not everything involves that type of abuse, and it makes it so people also dont care for older grooming victims due it being something that ‘only happens to children’.

please, people, educate yourselves.

Little psychology rant

the idea of "criminal psychology" just feels so fake and nonsensical from an anarchist perspective, not to mention ableist. Imo it exists in order to further spread the public fear of criminality and manufacture support for greater policing. Pop psychology generally has made people quicker to make snap judgements and pathologize others.

It is not emotionally satisfying for a past breakup or simply a random negative encounter to be due to a clash of personalities or opinions, now it has to be that the other person was a "toxic gaslighter narcissist". These things are becoming buzzwords used in place of "stupid" or "asshole".

I hear some people here complain about ads

I wrongly assumed everyone knew about Ublock Origin. I keep seeing people say "I keep seeing ads for X or Y" and I'm like, I don't see any ads in my daily life. Not only are ads annoying but they're often dangerous (linking to malware, scams and fishing sites)

For those of you that don't know: -Ublock Origin is a firefox extension (I wouldn't know about other browsers) -It works on desktop and on mobile -It blocks ads on almost all websites (including youtube) -You can also get an extension called "Popup Blocker Ultimate" to block popups Some other useful browser extensions include:

-Auto reject cookies -Port authority -ClearURLs

-Privacy Badger

-Chameleon (a lot of useful settings in here for privacy, but also for blending in)

I also highly recommend using a VPN for the web these days, it helps protect your IP from being obtained by malicious actors, stops your ISP from logging your activities and allows you to bypass regional blocks. Some VPNs have extra stuff built-in which can help protect you online. In my honest opinion, Mullvad is the best out there in terms of features, but if you don't want to support the unfortunate political views of its creators, alternatives are out there. Just please do your research, not all VPNs are built equally, many of them collect your data while claiming to protect it. I personally would not trust Proton, they have been known to work with feds to identify protestors. Free VPNs should generally be avoided, since if they're free, they're likely making their money by selling your data. RiseUpVPN may be an exception here, they claim to run entirely on donations and its made by anarchists, which is pretty neat.

These suggestions aren't meant to make you tor-level hidden, but are aimed at giving people more peace of mind during their daily online activities. If I've made any mistakes or you have any suggestions to add, please comment. I know I haven't even got into the topic of Linux or free software, but I'm trying to keep this somewhat brief.

Authoritarian Centrism

A concept that doesn't really get talked about, but I feel as if it could accurately describe some governments today, the UK *especially*. The UK government is not socially far right (yet), it makes statements against racism, accepts immigration, it's fairly accepting of gay people (although less so of trans people). It however is firmly capitalist, neoliberal, marginalizes/silences leftist viewpoints, arrests people on terrorist charges for protesting israel. So if the UK government doesn't believe in far right or far left ideology, then what does it believe in: In short, power.

-CCTV everywhere

-Extreme digital surveillance including monitoring communication and looking through people's private photos

-A strong attitude of "if you have something to hide, you're doing something wrong" -A very real likelyhood of being arrested for your speech -A media filed with constant copaganda and normalization of policing -A passive acceptance of state power with libertarian talking points not even really existing within the discourse -A fixation on what they call "sensible" and "realistic" politics which protects the status quo from any real change -Low trust society where people distrust trust strangers and often assume the worst of each other, men and trans women are always under scrutiny and in fear of something they do being misinterpreted as perverted - Radfems/terfs in postions of institutional power and existing across pretty much all political parties -Extreme hostility to youth autonomy, treating young people as property and fearing/denying their sexuality -Pedo panic that is maybe the most of extreme of any country on earth, perhaps even moreso than the US. amab adults are afraid of situations where they might have to interact with young people -Strict drug laws, weed is still illegal, every new drug is automatically illegal until explicitly made legal and medication that people need to live is heavily gatekeeped -Strong concern over "obscene" pornography as well as what people do in the bedroom (ie consensual choking is illegal) -Laws are strongly influenced by highly suspicious nonprofit concern groups that seemingly exist just to push the government's agenda and create the illusion that there's public demand for stricter laws

All in all, these add up to paint a picture of a government that can accurately be called authoritarian centrist. One of the fucked things about it is that the right has many convinced that this is a "left wing" or even "far left" government and are using that lie to push far right politics. The conflation of centrism/liberalism with leftism is a major component in how the right wing pushes people away from the left. It needs to be corrected at every opportunity.

on grooming:

Grooming is the satanic panic for the modern age. Do abusive partners exist? Yes. Can people be manipulated? Yes. Does sheltering people and denying them autonomy actually make them less manipulable? Absolutely not. So "grooming" is really just governments creating the outcomes that they want to pass new laws in a feedback loop. Shelter youth from sexual topics, instill them with stranger danger, make them afraid of their own bodies, tell them that their own choices are the result of manipulation. This then raises the amount of grooming reports, which then helps pass tougher restrictions on youth autonomy and so on and so on. A stupid and harmful cycle that's turning the general population into hysterical idiots.

This is not to say that there aren't people out there with malicious intentions towards youth. But firstly, demonizing mutually desired relationships towards MAPs and AAMs is not helping, it's stranger danger nonsense that shifts focus away from domestic and institutional child abuse. And secondly, the way people go about fighting this newfound epidemic doesn't actually make anyone safer. All it does is erode everyone's rights to the benefit of Orwellian government creeps, who themselves as a group, don't have the best track record when it comes to sexual misconduct.

Crazy that there are people out there getting mad over stories or drawings that don't work for the british government. What do you mean you can't ship these characters? Fandom is weird now. It’s becoming less trusting and friendly, and the Orwellian surveillance issues that are currently running rampant in the USA and UK have bled over into fandom spaces.

I’d read the articles that young people have no privacy and have become so accustomed to it that they enact on themselves. Abstractly I knew this and had accepted it, but it’s only now that I’m seeing it become a major issues.

Obviously part of the problem is I need to become a trusted member of my new fandom. But fandom in general is becoming far more hostile to privacy than even just 5 years ago.

I’ve had to leave 3 servers that want to do age verification. And this is new. Not even 5 years ago when I started zines ppl just turning 18-20 were far more receptive to the ideas espoused by us older folks about not being surveilled. But now it almost feels like they *want* to be surveilled.

They’ve become so used to it from tiktok and their government that they crave it. I’d write a dystopia about it but unfortunately what even is there to say that hasn’t already been said?

If you’re 18-22 now and you’re reading this and willing to listen without immediately calling me suspicious: this is not normal. Age verification will not keep you safe and will not keep minors safe either. It will only lead to the normalization of further surveillance and erosion of your privacy.

I know it can be an unwieldy text especially if you’re not used to reading academic sources, but go read The Panopticon. Watch V for Vendetta or read the comic, read 1984. Watch The Lives of Others and understand the ways this modern era is not so different from the Stasi in the film.
