My Pokémon writing blog! Home of the Final Requiem fanfiction storyverse. Basically centered around Pokémon Colosseum and my own original take on the events before, during, and after it (as well as my OCs and how they all fit into this mess). Main blog: theladylatias
A side-blog of mine that is meant to focus on all the random character development, ideas, and worldbuilding I come up with for my writing--specifically, my Pokémon fan setting, something I’ve been working on for over 20 years now. I don't have a particular name for it currently, but I've been referring to it as the Final Requiem universe.
I used to be very active on FF.net back in high school, but that was a very long time ago. Perhaps you knew me as Pichu Star, or minty-fivestar. Perhaps you remember my old Pokémon Colosseum fanfiction. If so, welcome fellow old person. xD
I've been working on my stories for a very, very long time. They are a personal passion project that I hope to rewrite and complete someday. If I had to summarize them, they are the tale of my original Pokémon trainer characters, Sam (a Pokémon Master who is jaded by her professional responsibilities and humbled by her duty to Ho-Oh) and Alexander (a thief-for-hire driven to avenge his lost family). The long thread of story details their lives, and how they intertwine. Threats to the safety of the world are sprinkled in there somewhere too. The plot also crosses over with the plot of Pokémon Colosseum, a game I love deeply.
Current and planned stories in the main plotline include:
Bound to the Dragon’s Heart (Altoshipping fanfic; based on the anime but introduces concepts relevant to the following stories)
Pokémon Colosseum Redux (rewrite of my original novelization of the game; current project) - related posts here
Pokémon Colosseum: Penumbria
Final Requiem
Dream Prism
All other Pokémon stories I write (or will write) also take place in this same universe.
Other related tags:
my fanfiction - all my writing; some are links to my posted works on AO3, others are Tumblr exclusives!
my art - (rare) artwork on my end
my oc - related to my original characters in this storyverse. In the future, I may also use this tag for canon character profiles detailing their versions in my storyverse
my mythology - worldbuilding posts, usually detailing myths, world events, and lore in my storyverse
Other side projects I’ll highlight here include:
The Longest Night - vampire AU of my Pokémon Colosseum story
Ocean Song - non-Pokémon themed fantasy pirate AU that features the canon characters and OCs of my storyverse
Please note that I can and will go back to what I post and update quietly as I continue to develop my ideas!
For more glimpses into my projects, please feel free to see what I have so far on Toyhouse (an account is required to view most of the content).
While I first and foremost write for myself, I am always pleased to share my creativity with others in good faith. Thanks for visiting!

Fanfic I've literally been working on for 20+ years
After so many delays and a complete rewrite, I finally finished a fanfic very near and dear to my heart~ First two chapters of Bound to the Dragon’s Heart, a Pokémon fanfiction, are up on AO3!
Brief summary: An Altoshipping (Ash/Latias) fic inspired by the original anime, where the two have a special destiny with one another, but really just want to be together cause they like each other. <3 But when criminals like Team Rocket threaten to tear them apart, can their bond endure?
A really sweet story, even with all the shenanigans I put everyone through. There's lots of exciting Pokémon battles, character drama, and sweet moments, and I tried my best to pay homage to the anime when writing it. I hope it’s cute and exciting and fun!
Planning to do weekly updates, so please comment, share, and keep coming back for the next chapters! <3
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
We're finally up to chapter 15! It's all hitting the fan now, with our various characters facing off against a number of opponents, battling to save their Pokémon, and to save Latias!
Hope you all like Pokémon battles, cause there's a ton of them from this point forward!

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
A roguish yet kind young mercenary, who devotes himself desperately to seeking justice for the wrongs committed to him in his past. However, he has no idea that he is meant for a far greater purpose than merely committing crimes...
Story (horribly abridged):
Alexander originates from the far-flung region of Orre, where he grew up in a secluded and fairly affluent/peaceful oasis town up until the day a horrible tragedy struck... Now alone in a cruel world, he opted to strike out on his own, and found himself befriending a young man named Nascour Breaire, who also had much to be bitter about. The two teamed up and made a living as mercenaries, selling their skills and taking on lucrative (and illegal) jobs from whoever offered enough money. This worked for a time... until they crossed paths with Final Requiem.
Several unfortunate years later, Alexander finds himself alone again, though far more successful with time and experience, renowned as the infamous "Pirate Prince." After a few encounters with a certain Chosen of Ho-Oh, Alexander is inspired to finally take another look at his past, which brings him back to Orre... and into an unfolding situation with a familiar face at the helm...
---
My baby~
Alexander is one of my oldest OCs, crafted a few years after I created Sam, and was originally meant to be a "minor" antagonist. He's since become one of my main OCs and will prove to be a major character in the Final Requiem universe! He debuts in the soon-to-be released fanfic Bound to the Dragon's Heart, as a secondary antagonist that sets the main conflict of the story into motion...
His story will eventually take him into the events of Pokémon Colosseum, and he'll prove to be a useful ally to Wes and Rui. And it seems he has some unsettled business with Nascour...?
Get used to his melodramatic ass, cause it's definitely not going anywhere. x3;
(Art by me also a million trillion years ago. xD I've put all my artistic energy into writing instead of drawing in the last couple of years, unfortunately.)
A fiery young woman who has established herself as a talented Pokémon trainer and member of Pokémon League. But her true destiny lies as the Chosen of Lady Skye, a responsibility that is both an honor and a burden.
Story (very abridged, lol):
As a child, Sam adored Pokémon and nature, always playing outdoors and imagining the adventures she would go on one day. Becoming a trainer was a dream come true, and she was determined to be the best she could be. Over the years, she asserted herself as a talented young woman, winning competitions and eventually defeating the Elite Four of Indigo Plateau.
Due to her repeated run-ins with Team Rocket during her journey--and managing to deal with them quite handily--she was offered a position at the Pokémon League working for Lance, the Dragon Master and League Champion, working to combat criminal teams and other threats in Kanto and Johto.
But despite such a prestigious job at such a young age, Sam's real destiny was soon to be revealed to her. Guided by fate and visions, she eventually came to the Brass Tower and face to face with the Legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh herself, known in the region as "Lady Skye." Once she proved herself in a battle, Sam was told that she had been selected as Lady Skye's Chosen, her human liaison and trustee of her powers, to help protect the world from those who would threaten its peace.
Such a grave responsibility terrified Sam, and it took her some months wrestling with the decision before she finally decided to accept this role. Ever since then, Sam has become a decidedly-different trainer--a bit more thoughtful, a bit more humble, and all too keenly aware of the weight of the expectations on her.
And with the revealed rumors of supposed "Shadow Pokémon" in another region, Sam will soon come face to face with the threat that Lady Skye--and the other Legendary Pokémon of the world--have been dreading for many ages...
---
Here comes the girl~
Sam is one of my Pokémon trainer OCs, and one of the main characters of my storyverse! (Also the mascot of this account, and my trainer-sona who has taken on a life of her own ever since I first created her when I was... 10? omg)
Though I haven't really written a LOT about her thus far, she debuts in the soon-to-be released (or re-released) story Bound to the Dragon's Heart, where she's introduced as a secondary protagonist. (Her backstory is mostly just the tale of how she progressed through Pokémon R/B/Y and G/S/C, so I'm not really planning on writing about all that except maybe through select flashbacks.) Through the stories to follow (along with various short stories/snippets I'll release), I hope to reveal more about her and the role she plays in the greater plot!
She's a character near and dear to my heart, and I hope I can do her justice as I share her with all of you! <3
(Art above by me... from like a million years ago, lol)
Another random drabble that basically rewrites the events of the second Pokémon movie, as it takes place in my storyverse. Supposed to be vague for now, but I thought it was important to clarify at least a little, since I'm about to reference it in the story I'm currently writing...
"Disturb not the harmony of fire, ice, or lightning
Lest these titans wreak destruction
Upon the world in which they clash
Though the water's Great Guardian shall arise to quell the fighting
Alone its song will fail
Thus the earth shall turn to ash
O Chosen One
Into thine hands bring together all three
Their treasures combined tame the Beast of the Sea
From the trio of islands, ancient spheres shall you take
For between life and death, all the difference you'll make
Climb to the shrine to right what is wrong
And the world shall be healed by the Guardian's song"
An event took place years ago, one that most people remember as merely a strange weather phenomenon, in which many Pokémon suddenly and inexplicably migrated to the waters of the Orange Islands.
Those more local to the area would have been aware of the specifics. That a wealthy man named Lawrence III aspired to “collect” rare legendary Pokémon, and set his sights on obtaining the Great Guardian of the sea… Lugia.
His efforts to track down Lugia in the usual way proved fruitless, but one day he read an ancient prophecy. One that promised he could tame the Great Guardian by way of the Legendary trio of birds that maintained a delicate balance over their domains. With this information, Lawrence III set out to capture Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. His interference caused the weather to change violently, and upset Pokémon from miles away. Many of them traveled to the area in response to the disturbance. Still, Lawrence III persisted, believing he could summon Lugia if only he captured the three birds. And so… he did.
The three Pokémon screeched and fought wildly against their bonds. The heavens above darkened as if in response to this disruption of nature. Soon, the Great Guardian would appear to restore the balance, and then—then—Lawrence III would capture his true prize.
Except… it never happened.
The waters churned, but only from the building storm. The gathered Pokémon in the area screamed and cried out, as if calling to someone for aid. But nothing happened. No one came.
Only for the fortuitous presence of the true Chosen One was calamity thwarted. A young trainer named Ash Ketchum, who happened to be in the area at the time, responded readily to the unfolding threat. Though he did not understand the nature of the prophecy or the true weight of the disaster unfolding, he nevertheless took action. All he knew was that Pokémon were being upset and harmed, and he would not sit back idly. With the help of his friends and his Pokémon, Ash bravely fought Lawrence III and destroyed the bonds that held Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Then, as they broke free and began to fight out of confusion and anger, he set out to gather their treasures and restore them to their shrines. With these tokens of nature returned to their rightful places, a local girl played the song of Lugia, and its timeless notes resonated with the treasures and with the hearts of the feuding Pokémon. Thus soothed, they returned to their roosts peacefully. The storm subsided, the Pokémon of the area were calmed, and Lawrence III retreated, humbled and dismayed. His plan was thwarted, and he knew he must not attempt such a dangerous stunt again.
After being hailed as a hero by the locals, Ash and his companions continued on their way, leaving calm waters and perplexed questions in his wake. What happened to the prophecy? Though it seemed mostly fulfilled, the elders of Shamouti Island scratched their heads and whispered frantically about why the Great Guardian never appeared. He was supposed to respond to the fighting of the Legendary trio; why had he not arisen?
Years later, there are still no answers. Perhaps the prophecy was misinterpreted. Perhaps the Great Guardian did not appear because there was no need; the brave Chosen One of Humans appeared to quell the disturbance, and did so masterfully.
And yet…
Those who live along the shores of Kanto and Johto know better. Something is wrong. Something is… lacking. Those who devote themselves to honoring the Great Guardian understand, even if they cannot articulate it. Their prayers are acknowledged but never really answered.
Nevertheless, they are offered all the same.
“Hail to the Great Guardian of the sea, the Leviathan of the darkest depths, the Dragon of the moon and stars. May your song reach the Light, may your wings encircle the Earth. Even in the darkest nights, your wingbeats guide our hearts to clarity.”
“A Pokémon that is said to live in a world on the reverse side of ours. It appears in an ancient cemetery.” (DP Pokédex entry)
“I believe this Pokémon must hail from a world where the heavens and the earth are as one, though I have no way of proving it.” (PL:A Pokédex entry)
A mysterious and ominous Pokémon often associated with death, destruction, or the afterlife, Giratina is frequently misunderstood. Its myths are varied amongst regions but frequently paint it as a creature cast out of our world, either for defiance or simply being incompatible with the mortal realm. The region of Sinnoh reveres it most prominently in their cultural traditions, often associating it with Dialga, Palkia, and Arceus, though Giratina does not actually feature much in these other Pokémon’s myths.
The tragic truth of the "Renegade Pokémon" has, unfortunately, been lost to time, with few aware of the real story.
Once, Giratina was a living creature, a beautiful dragon who served as a guardian between this realm and the realm of the afterlife. She was proud, fierce, and dedicated to her task, and many revered her for her power and honor. But a dark day came when some treacherous humans--her own chosen followers--plotted to steal Giratina’s power for themselves. They lured her into a trap and killed her, using a magic ritual to siphon her life force as it left her. The noble dragon’s soul became trapped in a plane suspended between our world and the afterlife, also known as the Reverse World.
The death energies twisted her form into a frightful beast, and she became both a Ghost and a Dragon. Her heart became bitter and hateful over time, furious at the humans who had killed her. As a result, many people believe that she is a terrifying Pokémon; however, she still cares for all souls and ferries them diligently to the afterlife. Those souls who died unfulfilled, or those who caused suffering to others during their life, are made to wander the Reverse World, a strange realm that reflects the real world. There, souls contend with the mistakes and regrets that weigh on them from their mortal lives; those who make peace with their decisions can then pass on to the afterlife.
Otherwise, those who refuse to take accountability for their actions are cursed to wander the Reverse World forever, constantly facing their mistakes and subject to the terror that is Origin Forme Giratina, who prowls her realm and unleashes her fury upon the unrepentant. Some unique souls may linger in the Reverse World for a time before reincarnating into a new life in the mortal world.
An obscure myth, still passed down through the Dragon Clan of Blackthorn, states that Giratina was banished to the Reverse World by Rayquaza for her violent nature, hence earning her the moniker of "Renegade Pokémon." No one is sure what Giratina did that was "violent," and the myth does not seem to take Giratina's death into account. Most elders of the clan assume that it is just a fable to teach children the value of respecting one's elders and not being defiant.
Many regions have superstitions and traditions of giving offerings to Giratina, so that their deceased loved ones will not have to encounter the Legendary Pokémon in her terrifying Origin Forme visage, and may pass peacefully to the afterlife knowing only Giratina’s kindness and protection. Few people actually revere or follow her outside of that; those who do find that she is actually not as terrifying as the stories make her out to be...
...Though she is still kind of scary.
The Blood of Giratina
When Giratina was slain, her blood where it fell was collected by the followers who betrayed her. Twisted by the energies of her death just like Giratina's physical form was, the blood coagulated into a foul, black substance that can be used in vile necromantic spells and rituals. With this blood, one is capable of resurrecting the dead and corrupting Pokémon with the fury of Giratina herself. Fortunately, not much of this blood still exists. Those afflicted by its dire effects may be soothed and healed by those who know how to sing to Giratina and appeal to her love for life.
Other notes:
I do not consider Giratina's anime appearances canon within my Pokémon universe, nor do they play much of a role in how I crafted my mythology. However, as with most things I create within the Pokémon fandom, there is room for many possibilities!
Palkia and Dialga do not actually interact with Giratina much, if at all in my universe, as they only deal with time and space in the "mortal plane." Other realms/planes of existence--which include the Reverse Realm and the afterlife--are not subject to their power or influence.
...No, the "Reverse World" is not Hell. There's not exactly a Heaven either. It is the neutral zone between life and the afterlife. Whatever is in the afterlife is subject to as much guessing in my Pokémon storyverse as it is in the real world. (I'll give you a hint, though--it's not based on Christianity!)
Oh my God, I had no idea you were still active!!! I remember reading your Colosseum novelization way waaay back when on FF.net! Good to see you're still writing!
Aaaaah thank you for stopping by! That really means a lot to me, that people still remember my ancient fanfic T-T
That novelization is getting a rewrite as we speak! It’s my current fanfic project and is still in progress, but sometimes discussion or snippets of it end up here! <3 Look for the tag “pokemon colosseum redux”
Super late on this last week of Orretober, but only because I had some social obligations and then an anniversary to celebrate~
The prompt I chose for this final entry is Orrepocalypse! And those of you familiar with my work might already recognize the setting I chose to work with--The Longest Night, my Pokémon Colosseum vampire AU! In which Orre is taken over by ravenous vampire beasts with Cipher pulling the strings, and everyone else has to just survive.
Content warning for blood, violence, profanity, usual horror stuff when it comes to vampires. :3 Enjoy!
A lifetime of mistakes, all leading from one act to the next, culminating in the totality of his sins and failures—
—All leading to this.
Wes sucked in another wheezy breath, fingers digging against the pavement helplessly. The metal wall at his back felt unyielding and strangely cool in the darkness, a complete contrast to the warmth that pooled beneath him.
The scent of copper growing stronger with every second.
He’d made one fatal miscalculation, enough to undo every precaution he’d ever crafted for himself, and the irony of it drove a wet laugh from his weakening lungs. Beside him, Umbreon paced back and forth with distressed coos, the yellow rings on his body glowing with ever-ebbing light. Espeon lay curled in a ball next to Wes, heedless of his trainer’s blood, his own trickling to join it from a cut on his face.
“I’m sorry…” Wes managed to rasp to them, unable to even question why they wouldn’t leave, why they seemed as agonized as he did in that moment. “I fucked up, didn’t I…?”
It seemed like such a good idea at the time. To defy Gonzap. He definitely wasn’t expecting the abrupt 180° from his boss, though. One minute, a “hell no,” the next, recoiling from a gunshot to the abdomen. Going from the gang’s prized thief to another casualty dying in the alley. But maybe it was what Wes deserved for a lifetime of ruthlessness.
“At least he didn’t take you…”
At that whisper, a weak attempt to justify this costly mistake, a low chuckle suddenly filled the air, making Wes’s hair stand on end and his two Pokémon look up. They both gave quiet growls, bristling as something moved in the shadows.
“It means nothing, little one. These Pokémon… they are so devoted to you, so bonded… they will not last long after your death. They will die of broken hearts.”
Wes felt his blood chill—well, more than it was attempting to already, in that moment. “What…?” he rasped, trying to move his head to see where the voice was coming from. But everything felt fuzzy, far away. Like he was drunk, but instead of feeling warm, everything was getting slowly colder…
“Such a fatal consequence of love,” the voice continued, both mocking and bitter in the same breath, “to sacrifice everything and yet have it all amount to nothing. They will follow you into your grave.”
A footstep followed the words… then another. Slow, loud, deliberate. Out of the shadows stepped a tall, lithe figure dressed in dark slender clothing. Long pale hair billowed out behind him like a streaming crest, and a cold, harsh face sneered down at Wes lying before him. He stopped just a few feet away from the dying man, with a small huff of amusement.
“You know this to be true… don’t you?”
Wes shuddered and stared up at the mysterious man, heart pounding erratically, but deep down he did know. Espeon and Umbreon had been bonded to Wes from a young age, and their Psychic and Dark-type powers only enhanced this bond to levels indescribable. He somehow could tell, in their lethargic and miserable demeanors, that they would be broken upon his last breath. The depression that would set in would render them helpless, useless… and in time, lifeless. It was not unheard of, and despite himself, frustrated tears welled up at the corners of his eyes. He had wanted so badly to save them… and yet, in losing his life, he would have failed them anyway.
“W-Who the hell are you…?” he whispered, blood flecking from rapidly numbing lips.
The tall man smiled slowly, though it was less sinister and more… sympathetic, in a way. He kneeled before Wes and gazed at him with unnerving red eyes.
“I am… one who should not care. The life of one pathetic mortal? Meaningless to me. And yet…” He paused to regard Espeon and Umbreon, both glowering at him yet seeming too weakened to really put up a fight. “…I, too, know what it is like to be helpless, to watch a beloved companion fade away on my behalf. And I gave everything to ensure it did not come to pass.”
Wes’s eyes flickered with mild interest. “How…?”
“By choosing… the infinite darkness. Embracing the part of yourself you have spent this life trying to suppress, to control… and spending the rest of your next life reveling in freedom.” The man grinned then, lips pulling back to reveal white teeth… and prominent canines, sharp and glinting in the moonlight. “Death for your enemies… eternity with your beloved Pokémon… and the ability to consume all you desire, without restraint.”
A dim, confused horror settled over Wes at this explanation, but his senses felt distant, trickling away just like the time he had left, and as he stared at Espeon and Umbreon beside him, he knew the decision was already made.
“…And they’ll live?”
The man’s expression softened, but his eyes reddened noticeably. “Live… yes. Not unchanged. But they will live.”
Vision already fading, Wes swallowed one last time… and nodded. “Sounds… like a deal to me.”
And even as his senses dulled, as he felt the dull pop of fangs sinking into his throat and all that long hair gently, lovingly enveloping him into the darkness… Wes’s eyes rolled back just enough so he could see the moon above him, a brilliant aura, the last thing he remembered before everything changed.
“Beautiful.”
A/N: Why yes, the mysterious man who takes a bite out of Wes is Nascour... cause of course it is. <3
I was definitely looking forward to this week's prompt: Gala! Specifically a gala at Realgam Tower!
This scene is intended to take place in my actual story project, Pokémon Colosseum Redux, a novelization of the game! It may get some tweaks once I actually integrate it into the fanfiction proper, but I'm happy with how it turned out!
Context is that Wes and Rui are ready to confront Cipher at Realgam Tower, but before the Colosseum tournament, there's a grand gala to celebrate the opening of the tower! They're forced to attend, and thus forced to interact with everyone they've been fighting against...
Turned out a lot longer than I intended, but it was just tooooo fun to think up outfits for everyone and describe them! Enjoy!
Oh no… oh no oh no oh—
Rui stood in the center of the reception hall, trembling and wringing her hands together, trying not to panic as she turned in a slow circle and scanned all the well-dressed people surrounding her. Then she closed her eyes and tried to focus her abilities, to feel for the familiar and comforting aura that she knew to be Wes’s. He couldn’t have gotten too far, right…?
But instead, she felt heavy footsteps, even through the marbled floor, and when she opened her eyes, her heart leapt into her chest with terror. For strolling her way—or attempting to stroll, best as his giant, barrel-chested frame could manage in such a dense crowd—was Gonzap, in too-wide black slacks and a red button up that seemed to be straining at the seams over his muscled chest and arms.
Rui backed away, but her heels wobbled under her, and by the time she caught her balance, the Team Snagem leader was looming over her.
“Well, well,” he rumbled, his antennae-like mustache twitching along with his lips into a sneer. “Where’s your knight in shining armor? I was hopin’ to say hi to him tonight.”
She swallowed once, twice, trying to force back the panic rising in her. “He’s around,” she mumbled, trying to look for an opening and make a break for it. “If you’ll excuse me…”
Gonzap chuckled, taking another step into her personal space. “Hey, what’s the rush? You know Wes and me go way back, right? Might as well get a chance to know each other better!” And before Rui could make a protest, he reached out with a hand that looked like it could snap her tiny arm in two…
“Master Gonzap.”
As the Snagem Head froze, Rui felt another presence suddenly at her side—dark, ominous, but something cold and breezy as well—and her arm was swiftly taken and looped through another. She looked up in shock, to see a tall man with long pale hair casually standing at her side. He was dressed in a pristine silver suit, trimmed with black with a blue cravat at his neck. And though flooded with relief that she no longer had to deal with Gonzap alone, Rui knew she was not out of the woods yet.
Gonzap scowled, his long eyebrows drooping with his displeasure. “Master Nascour,” he growled, low yet cautiously polite.
Nascour smiled thinly, placing a hand over Rui’s where her arm was hooked through his. Both a protective gesture, and a sort of… possessive one, too. She wasn’t free to go anywhere just yet. “I hope you’re having a good evening,” he intoned, voice pleasant yet somehow threatening as well. “Have you stopped by the appetizer table yet? Some of the finest delicacies from Kalos, I’m told.”
“I haven’t,” Gonzap muttered, eyes flickering from Rui to Nascour and back again. Then he finally took a step back, rolling his shoulders uncomfortably in his shirt. “Maybe I will, though. And drinks are free too, right?”
“Naturally.”
Gonzap shot Rui one last dirty look, before lumbering off in the directions of the refreshments. “I need to speak to you before the end of the night,” he said, in an attempt to sound assertive again, “but later, I guess…”
Nascour inclined his head graciously at the retreating Snagem leader’s back. “Of course,” he acknowledged. But as soon as Gonzap was out of earshot, he made some kind of irritated exhale. “I hope that dreadful man didn’t disturb you too much, my dear.”
Rui shook her head, though her thoughts were elsewhere. She remembered Nascour, but even if she didn’t, she certainly knew of him. She and Wes had crossed paths with him briefly in Phenac City. And then, just like now, she felt paralyzed by his dreadful aura. It was nearly identical to the Shadow Pokémon aura, but much more complex, difficult to make sense of… and more ominous. She never specifically felt like a Shadow Pokémon meant to do her harm, even if she knew it was more volatile and dangerous. But Nascour felt threatening.
The Cipher executive smiled thinly, before he gently led her in some direction through the crowd. “I don’t believe we’ve officially introduced ourselves,” he remarked casually, “though I am well aware of you, of course. Rui Shizuko, isn’t it? The lovely and rather persistent thorn in our sides. Try as my employees might, you seem to have evaded them all thus far. At least, with the aid of your dashing companion.”
Swallowing, Rui finally mustered the courage to speak. “W-What are you going to do with me?” she asked. “Wes won’t let you get away with—”
“Oh, do relax, my dear. I am not interested in anything more than getting to know you a little better,” Nascour chuckled. “After all, I have you and Mr. Harkoven right where I want you. There’s no need for a fight.”
Rui frowned, but realized maybe he had a point. They were already at Realgam Tower, and if Nascour wanted to harm them, he could have easily done it by now. Perhaps she really was safe… at least for the time being. “…You’re Nascour,” she mumbled, finally looking up at him. “I guess you’re the big boss here, huh?”
Nascour hummed in acknowledgement and looked down at her. “I suppose you could say that. Nascour Breaire… chief executive officer of Team Cipher. It is a pleasure to finally make your formal acquaintance.”
His mouth curled into a thin, amused smile as he paused to take in Rui’s appearance. Her usual red pigtails were gone, and her long hair now fell in carefully curated curls around her face. Her royal blue dress looked like something more suitable for a high school prom rather than a high-rolling gala, but was pretty nonetheless—a strapless gown with intricate sparkling beads patterned across the front, and a fluffy tulle skirt.
“You’re quite radiant tonight,” he offered, unlooping her arm from his so he could lift her hand to his lips in a brief kiss. “But I feel you already knew that. I’m sure your companion is a gracious and complimentary gentleman, despite his background.”
Rui made a face and pulled her hand away, wrapping her arms protectively around herself. “Speaking of which, where is he? You better not be trying to distract me with… with… charming and polite stuff while you kidnap him or something.”
Nascour laughed at that, seeming genuinely amused. “Not at all,” he assured, still chuckling. “Though I suppose that means you find me charming?”
“W-What?! That is not what I—”
“Master Nascour?”
The soft voice, almost drowned out by the noise and bustle of the crowd around them, made Nascour pause and look up. Rui followed his gaze to see a tall, beautiful woman with long hair pinned in a bun, red but in a much darker shade than Rui’s. In contrast to her usual revealing attire, Kimberly wore a modest, almost vintage looking maxi dress that ended just below her knees, with a modest neckline and short puffed sleeves. Her matching red pumps gave her even more height, and she looked almost taller than Nascour. Her dark eyeliner and bright red lipstick only added to the striking look, and also made her look much more mature and proper.
The aura around Nascour faded noticeably, if not completely. Rui caught a brief glimpse of something soft in the Cipher executive’s expression as he regarded his direct subordinate. Then he smiled, bowing his head politely. “Darling, there you are,” he greeted. “I have a favor to ask.”
Kimberly folded her hands in front of her. “Of course, sir. What is it?”
“The lovely young lady here has misplaced her companion. Perhaps you could locate him for her? I’m sure you’re quite familiar with Mr. Wesley Harkoven.”
Brown eyes darted to Rui, but Kimberly’s expression never changed. “It would be my pleasure.” She inclined her head briefly to Rui, before turning and heading off into the crowd.
“There, you see? I do not wish you to remain separated from your friend any longer than necessary.” Nascour took Rui’s arm again, though she didn’t resist, somehow realizing she really didn’t have a choice in the matter anyway. “Until my dear Miss Kimberly finds him, however, I insist you remain close. For your safety and comfort.”
Rui narrowed her eyes but followed along anyway. “Definitely feel safe and comfortable like this…” she muttered.
Nascour smirked slightly to himself, but didn’t otherwise react.
The two made a slow, lazy circuit of the reception hall, before he led her through an open door into what looked like a ballroom. Guests with drinks or food plates in their hands gathered at the edges of a dance floor as they chatted; those in the center of the floor were obviously several drinks into their evening already and dancing energetically, screaming and laughing with delight as some popular dance song blasted over the speakers. Nascour smoothly avoided the dance floor and sidestepped the crowds until they could get closer to the front of the room. Rui winced at the thudding bass, and Nascour paused several feet away, gesturing toward the rather conspicuous DJ having a grand time. As soon as Miror B. noticed his boss waving to him, he gave a beaming grin and pushed a button, letting the song play on while he moved to greet him.
“Well HEY!” he exclaimed, loud and excited. “If it isn’t Master Nascour! And the little lady who didn’t want to hang with me in Pyrite! What a shame, what a shame!”
Nascour smiled politely and led the three of them further away, where they could speak without being drowned out completely by the music. “All in past now, Master Miror B.,” he assured. “Miss Shizuko and Mr. Harkoven are our guests tonight.”
Miror B. smiled, his eyes obscured behind a large pair of sparkling silver shades that matched his glittering disco suit, which looked like the wearable version of a disco ball itself. Long strands flowed off the forearms of his sleeves, which fluttered around every time he gestured dramatically. “Ohhhh how wonderful!” he exclaimed, looking down at the much shorter Rui. “It is quite the party, isn’t it? How gracious of Master Nascour to let you enjoy the fun, too!”
“Indeed. After all, Realgam Tower is a testament to what our team aspires to, a shining spotlight on everything we have to offer.” Nascour smiled darkly, and Rui could feel his aura darken once more. “If the world’s most powerful men and women are allowed to see our power and might, surely we can afford our… rivals… the same luxury.”
Miror B. chuckled, though he sounded a little less enthusiastic. He glanced over his glasses toward Rui with an expression almost akin to sympathy. “Right you are, Master Nascour! Clever as always. That’s why you’re the boss!” He took a step back, bowing deeply and forcing Rui to duck away, as his afro swept the space in front of him. “Enjoy the party, little lady! If you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to my DJ duties!”
With a nod of acknowledgment, Nascour gently tugged Rui away and out of the ballroom. She felt relieved once the thumping music faded to a much more manageable sound behind her. They walked past a busy bar and a refreshment table piled high with snacks, and Rui ducked her head as they noticed Gonzap stuffing his face in a corner.
“Uncouth man,” Nascour muttered, as if Rui’s discomfort was quite obvious. “Perhaps we—”
“Oh! Oh Master Nascour! Over here!”
Rui practically cringed as Venus’s familiar, faux-sweet voice lilted through the air, and Nascour stopped. He turned toward Venus and watched as she half-led, half-dragged Ein through the crowd, waving to him excitedly.
“You look positively dashing tonight, Master Nascour!” she exclaimed brightly, clutching his free arm. Then she seemed to notice Rui holding onto Nascour’s other arm, and her expression darkened considerably. “Oh! What’s this…? Sir, you let her into our party? But whyyyy?!”
Nascour maintained his polite demeanor, even with Venus practically bruising his right arm. He pushed Rui behind him, as if trying to keep distance between the two women. “My radiant Lady Venus,” he began, in a placating tone that made Ein noticeably scowl next to them, “now is not the time to be getting upset. You should be having fun, and if our guests wish to have fun also… I see no need to cause a fuss.” He paused for a moment, his eyes shifting between Ein and Venus. “You look breathtaking, my dear. And perhaps the same may be said for you, Master Ein.”
Ein glowered at the sentiment. “I’d appreciate if you didn’t mock me, Master Nascour,” he grumbled. But even Rui had to admit, he looked somewhat dashing in his outfit, even if completely uncomfortable. He wore a deep grey, high-collared blazer over a matching set of slacks, fully buttoned as if to hide everything. His left arm was still in a sling; the memories of the events in the Shadow Pokémon Lab made Rui wince and look away uncomfortably. Fortunately, Ein didn’t seem particularly concerned with her presence.
Nascour chuckled. “Not at all, Master Ein.”
Venus seemed pleased at Nascour’s assessment of her outfit, something just as bright and eye-catching as the dress Rui had seen on her before. Tonight, she chose to wear a bold flamenco dress, long and form-fitting with long sleeves and numerous ruffles that billowed over the ground behind her. Her brown hair was placed up in a braided bun with matching pink flowers, and she swished her dress around as if to show off. “You really like it, sir?” she asked, eyes wide with admiration.
“I love it, my lady. You are always a sight.”
Ein rolled his eyes, but didn’t seem entirely offended when Venus returned to his side and clamped on to his uninjured arm. “Did something happen to the gallant young hero of Orre?” he questioned casually, his attention finally turning to Rui. His gaze was stern through his dark glasses, though not especially hostile. Rui timidly looked up at him and nodded a greeting.
“Not at all. I’m merely keeping the young lady company until we find him again,” Nascour explained.
Venus seemed slightly annoyed by this explanation, but she laughed all the same. “Always the pinnacle of gentlemanliness,” she teased.
Nascour nodded, already pulling Rui closer as he prepared to stride off again. “I am nothing without my… gentlemanliness,” he quipped, reaching out to Venus graciously. She placed her hand in his automatically, as if this were ritual by now, and he kissed it gently. “I hope to speak with you again later before the evening is out.”
Venus beamed, seeming in high spirits once more. “Of course, sir! We look forward to it!”
Ein made some kind of sound of acknowledgment, before he was dragged off by Venus once again.
Nascour patted Rui’s arm gently, guiding her through the crowd yet again. His eyes swept the crowds as they walked along, and his voice was a soft yet pleasant purr. “You see? My associates and I… we can be pleasant company,” he said. “You are more than welcome to share in that… if you cooperate.”
Rui felt her heart pounding again, but she also felt emboldened by having Nascour’s company for the last several minutes. He wouldn’t cause a scene now, right? “If you’re trying to get me or Wes to stop what we’re doing… forget it,” she growled, in a low tone only he could hear. “Being polite doesn’t make up for all the Pokémon you’ve stolen and turned to Shadow. All the people you’ve hurt and threatened.”
Nascour’s eyes narrowed, a glint of red appearing so briefly Rui almost thought she’d imagined it. But the aura around him flared, something not quite angry but almost frustrated, and she knew she wasn’t imagining things. “I am being polite because it is far more preferable to my other methods,” he intoned darkly, the threat clear in his voice. “And my Kimberly would be ever so heartbroken if I was pushed to more extreme methods. Don’t make me upset her.”
Rui’s eyebrows raised in surprise, but before she could respond, Nascour stopped and he gestured to their left. “Ah, speaking of which… there she is now.”
Several feet away, Rui saw Kimberly again, and her heart fluttered in excitement when she saw the woman was talking to Wes. In contrast to his usual dark clothing, he cut a very different and impressive figure in an outfit of all white—he wore a long white coat with the collar folded down, a white button up, white jeans with a casual fit, even white boots. It made him look positively tan in comparison, and his dirty-blond hair look much darker than usual. His brow was furrowed as he and Kimberly spoke in low voices to each other, but as Nascour and Rui approached, he looked up, and his expression softened—but only slightly.
Nascour bowed deeply to Wes, before releasing Rui’s arm and coaxing her back to her friend. “There he is. We were worried we’d lost you.”
Rui quickly returned to Wes’s side, squeezing his hand tightly. Wes squeezed it back and studied Nascour dubiously. “So I heard. But I figured Kimberly wouldn’t lie when she said you’d bring her back soon enough,” he muttered gruffly.
Nascour chuckled and held out his hand. “It is quite the honor to officially meet you, Mr. Harkoven,” he said, his eyes dancing with small flecks of red even as he smiled. “I told you that we’d see each other again somewhere, and so we have. Nascour Breaire… chief executive officer of Team Cipher and your host for the evening. I do hope you and your lady friend are having a pleasant time.”
Wes stared at Nascour’s hand with a look almost akin to disgust, but he swallowed his reservations back and shook firmly. “I’ve had worse,” he replied.
Kimberly glanced at Wes one more time before she moved to stand alongside Nascour, and he took her arm gently. He never stopped smiling at both Wes and Rui. “Such a charming pair,” he observed. “Am I to assume Miss Kimberly has not swayed your position on where we stand?”
A scoff escaped Wes as he shook his head, almost immediately. “Not a chance in hell.”
“Hm. A pity.”
Suddenly… what seemed like a dark shadow seemed to fall across all four of them, and everyone turned—and craned their necks up—to see Dakim, practically blotting out the overhead lights as he towered over all of them. To Rui’s surprise, the giant man looked rather clean-cut and nearly civilized in a standard three-piece suit, black jacket over a white vest over a black button up and tie. His slacks and dress shoes were well-sized, and even his large mess of red hair had somehow been tamed into a spiky but tidy style, too. In fact, he almost looked normal, save for the red markings still painted across his face, and the fact that this suit would look absolutely absurd if one were to see it on the hanger.
“Master Nascour,” Dakim spoke, voice low and respectful, his eyes only briefly glancing in Wes and Rui’s direction. “Might I have a moment of your time, in private? It is… somewhat urgent.”
Nascour raised an eyebrow with mild surprise, before he nodded and patted Kimberly’s hand. “Ah, of course, Master Dakim.” He looked down at Wes and Rui once again, a cold smile twitching upon his lips. “Please excuse me… and please, enjoy the festivities. Tonight is a night to indulge. But make no mistake…”
He turned with Kimberly on his arm, striding off, but his voice lingering ever ominous in his wake.
“…You had best reconsider your position by tomorrow, or my graciousness will not be extended. You are in our territory now. And this will be resolved… one way or another.”
(PS: I am not, and never will be ashamed of how much I enjoy writing my Nascour. <3)
For those uninitiated, Kimberly is my Cipher Peon OC who works for Nascour!
The prompt was Shadow Beasts vs Shadow Lugia, but I did a very loose interpretation of it, lol.
For this prompt I decided to write my own “Ein File” as seen in Pokémon Colosseum, describing some of the worldbuilding I’m developing for my own storyverse. Hinting at interesting lore, haha. Enjoy!
Ein File L
While groundbreaking in of itself, the Shadow Pokémon project was not developed from scratch. My research was based heavily from observation notes and research provided by the Master, remnants of a failed oceanography expedition in Johto two decades ago. The conclusion I came to after reviewing these notes extensively is that the “Shadow Pokémon” state can actually be induced naturally, through incredibly negative emotions and experiences. The incredibly unique circumstances of the failed expedition led me to speculate that this cannot be achieved in normal Pokémon, however; this is a state that only incredibly powerful—perhaps only Legendary—Pokémon can work themselves into.
This one sighting is the only one recorded in recent history; anything else referenced is perhaps closer to mythology and folk tales rather than real historical events. What all of these stories seem to have in common is the repeating themes of heartbreak and all-consuming despair, and the setting of the ocean.
While the power of our artificially induced Shadow Pokémon seem to pale in comparison to the power of the “natural” Shadow Pokémon, perhaps that is for the best. Our efforts to contain and control our experiments are still a work in progress, and even our own Shadow Legendaries prove difficult to subdue on occasion. With time, I hope our techniques for controlling such power improve, so that we may likewise continue to increase the power of our Shadow Pokémon.
Perhaps what is more troubling—and indeed, ill-advised—are recent proposals from upper management to try and track down and harness the power of the Shadow Legendary that still roams the world even to this day. My professional opinion is that such a task is unnecessary and exceedingly dangerous, and our resources would be better allocated to our artificial program.
Still sick this week, though getting better. Decided to work with the prompt Join Cipher!
I decided to write part of a scene that's still to come in my in-progress fanfiction, Pokémon Colosseum Redux. The context is basically: Cail is dating Sierra, one of my Cipher Peon OCs who is also Ein's younger sister and a relatively important employee in the team. Because of this, Nascour decides it might be useful to reach out to Cail and make an ally of him... Not explicitly "joining Cipher," but it was close enough. x)
I don't normally like releasing previews of unfinished stuff, but it's a brief enough scene that I think I'm ok with it!
Cail fidgeted as he stared at himself in the mirror one more time, feeling more out of place than ever. His reflection scarcely resembled himself, and his strange surroundings did nothing to make him feel any more at home.
He’d tried his best to dress up; he really did. But there was no way in hell he was getting a tuxedo or anything like that, even if it was for something as important as this. So the best he could make do with was his best pair of black jeans, a polished pair of work boots, and a borrowed cowboy shirt from Willie. But even as he ran a hand back through his green hair, he felt self-conscious—unusual for him. Half of it had to be nerves at being invited to dinner at Realgam Tower, of all places, but the other half was most certainly his desire to not make a fool of himself in front of Sierra, and the people she worked with and looked up to most.
The door opened behind him, and in the mirror, he could see Sierra step into the room. She smiled at him warmly, crossing over to where he stood and looping her arms around his waist.
“You clean up so well,” she teased, squeezing him a little before stepping to the side of him, to admire his reflection.
Cail rolled his eyes and turned to face her instead. His mouth twitched into a reluctant smile, taking in the sight of her in a cute purple dress with matching heeled sandals. He looked her up and down for a few seconds, before he reached up to brush his hand against her cheek. “Not really,” he chuckled. “But at least I have you to draw the attention off me.”
Sierra grinned and grabbed his hand to pull it away, but not before she pressed a soft kiss to it. “Cheeky,” she teased. “Come on, they’ll be waiting for us.”
The two exited the room and boarded the elevator a few feet down the hallway. Cail felt his heart pounding as they ascended to the top levels, where VIP guests at Realgam Tower were meant to stay and be entertained. Once the elevator doors slid open, Sierra led him down another hall, then through a door that opened into a luxurious casino. Rows of slot machines and tables for cards, roulette, and craps games spread out before them in a hall that still smelled like freshly installed carpet. But as their footsteps thudded through the empty room, Cail thought it felt more unsettling than awe-inspiring.
On the other side of the casino, Sierra exited through the main entrance of the room, then continued down a hall and hung a right to a set of elegant doors with curved handles. She opened one, but Cail hung back and took the door from her, waiting until she had entered the room fully before stepping inside himself.
Within, a long banquet table stretched out before them, covered in a long white tablecloth with many chairs filling the length on each side. Only one end of the table was set with a few place sets, napkins, and silverware, however. And as Sierra and Cail approached, they could see that a few people were already seated—Nascour at the head of the table, of course, and Ein to his right. The two were leaned in close to one another, speaking softly as they swirled their respective wine glasses, but when they noticed Sierra and Cail, they immediately straightened. Nascour, gentlemanly as always, stood up from his seat and held a hand out to Sierra. She moved to take it, and he pressed a gentle kiss to her knuckles.
“Radiant as always, my dear,” he purred, before making a move to pull out the seat to his left. But then he stopped himself, as his eyes trailed over to Cail. He smiled and instead approached the new guest, one hand behind his back, the other held out to Cail with forward politeness. “Ah… the charming young man that has won our Miss Sierra’s heart.”
Cail swallowed and took a deep breath before he moved to shake Nascour’s hand firmly. “Yes, sir,” he acknowledged. “Cail Anderson. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Nascour Breaire. And the pleasure is all mine, I assure you.” The taller man took a step back, eyes watching Cail expectantly; fortunately, the young rogue immediately realized what he had to do. He stepped behind Sierra’s intended chair and pulled it back for her. Sierra sat down, and he carefully pushed her chair back in. Nascour nodded approvingly and returned to his seat, while on the other side of the table, Ein stood up as well. Cail made sure to walk over and shake his hand, too; the scientist’s expression, while somewhat dubious, wasn’t as hostile as Cail expected. The two nodded silently to one another before Ein sat down again, and Cail returned to seat himself next to Sierra. She shot him a pleased smile and touched his knee under the table before she turned her attention back to Nascour.
“I’m sure it’s a bit unusual to accept a dinner invitation here, of all places,” the Cipher Executive began, “but my reasons for this are twofold. One is, quite simply, to allow the kitchens and their staff a test run of a meal service ahead of Realgam Tower’s opening. But two, more importantly…” He trailed off, his eyes darting between Ein and Sierra. “…I wish to express things that are only for your ears. My own staff, while well trusted, are perhaps too loyal—in the sense that they will not question me or my ideas. But you, on the other hand… Master Ein… Miss Sierra… I trust you two to not only have the intelligence to polish my ideas, but also the confidence to challenge them, if need be.”
The two siblings exchanged a glance, before nodding. However, Ein couldn’t help but speak up. “With no offense meant… why, then, allow Sierra’s… paramour to be here?” He shot Cail a neutral look over his glasses, before taking another drink of wine.
Nascour chuckled softly, but did not answer right away, as several servers entered the room and began to pour wine for the two new guests. They also set platters of charcuterie before them on the table, before leaving to allow the diners to savor their appetizers in peace. Only after everyone had served themselves some food and tasted their wine did Nascour continue.
“Mr. Anderson is invited tonight because I have need to assess his… trustworthiness,” he explained, almost too casually. Cail felt himself stiffen a little, even with Sierra’s hand on his leg squeezing him reassuringly. “After all, what is precious to Miss Sierra should be precious to me, so to say. And if he wishes to remain close with your darling sister, well… he’ll have to learn sooner or later how to keep Cipher’s business close to his chest.”
“I see.” Ein didn’t seem to sound disappointed, but he didn’t sound enthused, either.
Nascour sat back in his seat and gave Cail an appraising look, hands folded on the table before him. “I am not normally given to trusting people outside of those I’ve personally assessed, but… in recent days, I’ve seen the value of outside perspectives,” he acknowledged. “And if Miss Sierra already trusts you, then I am inclined to do the same.”
Cail shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “Um… sorry, but… I’m still kinda confused,” he admitted. “Don’t get me wrong; I’m grateful to be here, and I’m grateful you trust Sierra’s judgment of me. But… I’m just a guy. A random dude off the Pyrite streets. And if I wanted to join Cipher already, I think I already know all the avenues to do that…”
Ein scoffed a little, but crossed his arms and shrugged. “Sierra has already kept us appraised of your… reluctance to be tied to any allegiance, Cipher or otherwise,” he said wryly. “We are aware.”
Nascour chuckled, picking up his wine glass again. “Indeed. I can respect your desire to remain… unaligned. I’m not here to offer you a position. No… I’m here to trade you a favor… for a favor.”
At that, Cail leaned forward a little in his chair, intrigued. “What kinda favor?” he asked, unable to hide his curiosity.
“Whatever you should wish, within our power.” Nascour’s mouth twitched into a pleased smile. “Luxurious accommodations at our very own Realgam Tower? Money to buy what you wish? A new car, new clothing, new Pokémon?” His eyes darted in Sierra’s direction. “The freedom to pursue Miss Sierra, knowing that opportunity is laid at your feet, only waiting for you to take it if you should be so bold? By all means.”
Ein immediately jerked his head toward Nascour, scowling. “Now wait just a minute—”
Sierra snorted ungraciously into her napkin, and Cail felt his face flushing with surprise. “H-Hold on… I don’t…”
“It’s a lot to take in, I’m sure. But the favor remains open. Whenever you decide to call upon it.”
Cail swallowed, glancing between both the Cipher Executive and his somewhat-pouting chief scientist sitting next to him. “That’s… really generous,” he admitted. “And what exactly would you want in return…?”
At that, Nascour’s smile turned only slightly unpleasant. “I am told you are a well-connected man. And such a man is worth his weight in gold. That is why I’m willing to offer you a blank check. All I ask in return…”
He paused, leaning forward. Only then did Cail take note of the unnatural red tinge in his eyes.
“…is whatever you know about these so-called ‘heroes of Orre.’ The ones called Wes… and Rui.”
A/N: Context--the reason this is going to be a bit of a problem for Cail is that by this point in the story, he's close friends with Wes and Rui. Unbeknownst to Sierra. Oops.
Yes, I'm old enough that the coincidental Matrix reference is not lost on me, haha. I'm not sure why I originally decided to go with that name, but it's two decades too late to want to change now!
Even though I'm horribly sick right now, it at least gives me time to write. Really wanted to participate in the Orretober prompts going on right now, so here's my contribution! The Week 1 prompt I chose to do is AU!
The specific AU I'm writing about is a comfort one I've actually been messing around with for a while now. It's a fantasy pirate themed AU I've dubbed Ocean Song, that stars all the characters--OCs and canon--from my Pokémon Colosseum fanfiction universe. At the moment it's a self-indulgent thing that basically explores the lore of my Pokémon universe in a different way (recontextualizing the Pokémon elements as deities or guardians) and basically having shameless fun with reverse harem elements. But we're not getting into that today. xD
This particular scene celebrates my love for Colosseumshipping (Wes/Rui) and reimagines their first meeting in the context of my Ocean Song universe! <3
It was all over within the space of several minutes.
Really, it had all been over the moment the Sapphire Wind’s chain shot had torn through the enemy ship’s masts with nearly-chilling accuracy. As the ship floundered, her men screaming in the wake of splintered wood and fallen sails, it was child’s play to catch up alongside them and board them. Whatever defense they could muster was cut down easily by the boarding party, and the rest of the crew surrendered readily.
Now, Wesley Harkoven prowled below decks, cutlass at the ready, searching with practiced eye for any stragglers or cowards hiding in wait, as well as for valuable cargo to report back to the captain. Behind him, a few other crewmen looked through random crates, turned over tables and bunks, shouted at cowering cabin boys who fled topside at their command. But as Wes approached the brig, he hesitated, hearing movement—and voices—inside the room before he even could see within.
“We’re dead now! I knew this was a bad idea, Trudly!”
“Oh shut up, Folly, you’re the one who wanted to get on the first ship outta Gateon!”
“I didn’t think we were gonna—”
Wes stepped into the doorway, brandishing his blade, and he scowled at the two men inside. They stood with their backs at the far end of the brig next to one of the cells, hands raised in surrender.
“H-Hey mate, don’t kill us! We surrender!” the blond pirate begged, his voice the first that Wes had overheard.
His companion, green-haired and wearing dark glasses, glowered and elbowed his companion. “Quit whinin’ like that!” he hissed. “These pirates only respect confidence!”
Wes chuckled humorlessly, silencing their whimpers. “I don’t respect men who are cowering below decks instead of standing alongside their shipmates during battle,” he stated, stepping further into the room. “Now get out of my way and join the rest of your crew. My captain will decide what to do with you.”
The two hesitated, and Wes could tell the green-haired man—Trudly?—was considering a fight, his hands balled into fists. But then someone else stepped into the room alongside Wes, and the brief moment of bravado melted away.
“Wes, ya good, mate?” Aaron Rieger, the Sapphire Wind’s gunner, tilted his head at first his shipmate, and then the two men staring him down. “Need any help with these guys?”
Wes smirked a little and shook his head. “They were just about to head topside. Weren’t you?”
Folly and Trudly looked at one another, deflated, and then nodded, slowly trudging toward the door with their hands up. Aaron allowed them to walk past, before he shot Wes a grin and followed them out, to escort them back up to the deck.
Once alone, Wes sheathed his blade before taking a quick look around the brig. Most of the cell doors were open, indicating no one was in there. But he walked through the room anyway, making sure not to overlook anything. He hadn’t been elevated to the Sapphire Wind’s master-at-arms for being careless, after all.
As he approached the end of the room, a slight movement in the last cell caught his attention. Drawing closer, Wes could hear a muffled squeak of fright, and a glimpse of fluttering robes as someone tried to duck into the corner. And despite being hardened against all kinds of grim situations, all manner of depravity or horror, he still couldn’t bite back the shock at realizing the figure trying to hide from his gaze was a young woman.
He cautiously stepped closer to the cell, testing the door—but it was locked. No matter. They would find who carried the key, or find a way to pick or force the lock. Wes wrapped his hands around two of the bars, pressing his face closer as he tried to sound kindly. “Hey,” he spoke, his voice softening, “don’t be afraid. I’m not here to hurt you.”
The woman took a trembling breath, before she looked up at him. To Wes’s surprise, she had brilliant blue eyes, even obvious in the flickering candlelight that lit the room. Her red hair was placed in pigtails, and her once-pristine white robes were stained with dirt and what looked like old bloodstains. His heart clenched a little, sympathy flooding into it despite years of steeling himself against such softness.
“Are you all right?” he asked.
She swallowed hard, before slowly giving him a nod. “I… I’m all right.”
“Who are you?”
She took another breath, her voice wavering. “Rui. Rui Shizuko, high priestess of the Agate Temple.”
Wes felt another clench at his heart, something working at the back of his mind. She looks… so much like…
“What about you? Who are you?” Rui asked, quietly. “Are you here to lay claim to me instead?”
The look in her eyes was solemn, but he could still sense the fear that lay just below the surface. A woman trying to stay brave even in the face of such helplessness and uncertainty. Wes took a deep breath, before shaking his head slightly.
“My name is Wesley Harkoven. I serve aboard the Sapphire Wind,” he replied. “And I’m not here to hurt you, or claim you. I’m here to help you.”
His mind was made up long before it occurred to him to consult with Captain Tokaru. Damn their schedule, damn their route, damn whatever other protests Alexander would come up with. He certainly couldn’t make the argument against helping a lady in distress, not when he was guilty of doing the exact same thing himself…
Rui blinked in surprise at Wes’s words, before—to his surprise—a soft smile played upon her lips. She looked tired, weakened, exhausted… but somehow the way she smiled lit up her face like the sun cresting over the horizon.
“Thank you,” she whispered, getting to her feet. Despite her obvious fatigue, she bowed politely to him, like an elegant maiden from a stately court. “Guardians bless you for your kindness.”
Wes couldn’t help but smile, and he bowed his head graciously in response. “It is my pleasure… my lady.”
A quick drabble that I had to get out, detailing my thoughts on Dialga, Palkia, and Arceus in my Pokemon story universe. This references the events of Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, though not quite Platinum because my role for Giratina is very different in my story-verse and is not related to Dialga or Palkia. I have not played Pokemon D/P for years, but was inspired to write this since since my spouse recently decided to pick up Brilliant Diamond for the first time.
There was an incident, years ago, that the people of Sinnoh still remember. Though no one really understands the magnitude of what happened, or the possible ramifications.
Once, there was an ambitious man named Cyrus, who founded a criminal team called Team Galactic. His life bittered him to the world, to humans, to Pokémon, and at some point he determined that the world needed to be dismantled, remade, with himself as its figurehead. Only he could craft a world without emotions, attachments, or impurities. His arrogance was such that he no longer saw any of the joy in the world as a positive, and saw only the cruelties of the universe as nature of all that was and ever would be. He was blinded by his personal perceptions and could no longer see the divine in anything, not even himself.
His team worked diligently to bring his goals to fruition, though very few of its members truly knew what they were contributing to. They captured the lake guardians of Sinnoh, using their power to craft a relic only spoken of in ancient myths. The Red Chain, an item that could bind and control even a Legendary Pokémon. And Cyrus’s targets were the embodiments of time and space themselves… Dialga and Palkia.
At the top of the sacred Mt. Coronet, at the Spear Pillar where the humans of Sinnoh beheld Dialga and Palkia for the very first time, Cyrus set his trap in motion. Here he used the power of the chain to tear open rifts in space and time, and as he hoped, Dialga and Palkia entered our world through them, investigating this disturbance. But Dialga, guardian of all timeways, all possible outcomes, foresaw the danger, and sang a note of warning to her counterpart. Palkia, hearing her warning, immediately teleported to another dimension of space, avoiding Cyrus’s trap.
But the split second of warning to Palkia gave Cyrus the opening he needed to ensnare Dialga instead. As the chain surrounded her, binding her power, her roar reverberated across the continent, distorting time itself as the chain attempted to contain her. Cyrus watched in fascination and confusion as his surroundings warped between pristine stone pillars, crumbled ruins, and even nothing at all, a bare mountain peak before the ancient temple was ever built. As the Legendary Pokémon fought back, the Red Chain’s power over her only intensified… but little did Cyrus realize the dangerous consequences of attempting to contain the embodiment of time itself.
When her own power could not shatter her bindings, Dialga’s roars took on a more desperate, pleading tone, her cries piercing not only Cyrus’s ears, but his very soul as well. His mind swam, and he grew nauseous, his body unable to comprehend or deal with the effects of such rapid time traveling. As his vision blurred, he suddenly realized he was looking down at himself, reeling in pain. This vision… Dialga’s vision… he could see through her eyes!
As she cried out once more, the vision shifted… everything went black. For a moment, all was calm, until Cyrus thought he could see something glowing. It made no sense for a while… until the object continued to grow, and grow, the light emanating from it stronger, and stronger. Then, he realized what he was beholding was an egg. A giant, smooth Pokémon egg, glowing somehow in this pitch black environment. Then, with a jarring sound, a crack appeared on the egg’s surface. Then another. Then many, crisscrossing across the shell’s surface. One final crack, and the egg split apart. And then Cyrus’s surroundings burst into blinding light.
When he could see again, he found himself stunned to see a beautiful white Pokémon on four legs, stepping forth from the hatched egg. As its feet touched the ground, green grass suddenly began to shoot up, as far as Cyrus’s eyes could see. Trees rose into the brightening blue sky, clouds whirled into existence, flowers blossomed rapidly on bushes and vines bursting with foliage. The wind stirred the plants, and soft bird chirps filled the air. The Pokémon sniffed its surroundings, a gentle cry escaping it, before it began to… speak? Its mouth did not move, but Cyrus swore it sounded like the Pokémon was speaking. Chanting. But the language was incomprehensible, like no human language that ever existed. Cyrus barely knew if what he was hearing was even the totality of what the Pokémon was saying. He somehow felt like these sounds weren’t meant for any human to perceive, much less speak.
As the Pokémon chanted what sounded like a mantra, over and over, he watched as some kind of rectangular tablet formed in the air above the Pokémon. It hovered overhead once fully formed, and the Pokémon began to chant a different mantra. Cyrus watched in wide-eyed fascination as this repeated over, and over, and over again. The tablets that formed were in different colors, different shades. Some even appeared grey, but Cyrus somehow could sense that these were merely colors he could not perceive with his limited senses. He lost count of how many were formed, all of them creating some kind of halo around the magnificent white Pokémon. When at last, the chanting ceased, the prism of colors surrounding the Pokémon was indescribable, beautiful.
The Pokémon seemed to pause, taking in the wonder of its idyllic surroundings, eyes sparkling with joy and wonder. But then a small sound cut through the peaceful silence. Cyrus tensed to recognize it was Dialga’s cry, sounding plaintive and distressed. The white Pokémon’s eyes dimmed, and it took one step forward, bellowing a resounding cry in response to Dialga’s plea across time, across dimensions. The sound of something like glass shattering pierced through Cyrus’s mind.
The grass beneath the Pokémon’ feet began to wither, and its legs seemed to buckle. Everything seemed to lose its luster, the sky turning grey as the trees withered and lost their leaves. Cyrus felt like he was being sucked away, the vision fading. He struggled to hold on to the sight before him, desperately, watching in horrified confusion as the Pokémon collapsed to the ground. The floating tablets around it faded, one by one, and as the last one disappeared, the Pokémon’s gaze seemed to cut through Cyrus himself, staring at him even as the light vanished from its eyes. The fur, skin, then even the muscle rapidly began to rot away, a skeleton being left behind. And even these bones slowly began to dissolve, blowing away like dust in the wind.
His mind went lightheaded, a silent scream tearing forth from his lungs as he tried to breathe, tried to fight back. The last thing he saw before his senses failed him was a soft glow in the darkness, an egg slowly forming before his eyes once more…
When authorities appeared later to investigate Mt. Coronet’s peak, they only found the remains of a dull, shattered red chain made of crystal, the fragments dull and inert. Cyrus sat amid the fragments, eyes distant, mumbling some kind of nonsense phrase over and over. Unable to get any information out of him, the police took him into custody and to a local hospital. From what they could glean from his Team Galactic officers, his plan had been to capture Dialga and Palkia to obtain their power with the Red Chain they helped him create. But the chain had clearly failed… and the Legendary Pokémon had escaped his clutches.
Since then, Cyrus has remained in the care of the hospital, speaking very little and always with a distant look in his eyes. Surrounded by pen and paper, he writes endless pages of what appear to be nonsense, and constantly chants some strange phrase, attempting to record the sounds he mumbles. All for naught.
He cannot recreate the mantras he heard in his vision, even though he has tried for years. Such sounds, such words, are not meant for humans. These are the very songs of creation, and to truly know and grasp such power is something that would unmake a mortal.
Yet, Cyrus is still here, perhaps one of the few people that has ever had a glimpse of the embodiment of creation in its own realm, a world off limits to everyone and everything save for Dialga and Palkia themselves. He was so close to touching the core of the universe and he never even realized.
The world carries on, and Cyrus continues to write. Gods willing, he will never truly remember those songs.

Takes place within my Pokemon Colosseum vampire AU, The Longest Night!

"Even the longest night ends with the glimpse of dawn."
Happy Halloween~ In celebration, I'm starting out posting a throwback to this very old (mind the date at the bottom) piece of art I drew for one of my favorite Pokémon Colosseum AU settings, titled The Longest Night!
The premise is Pokémon Colosseum, but instead of Shadow Pokémon, their goal was to create Shadow humans. (The Shadow Pokémon are but a useful side effect/consequence.) Now Orre is terrorized by vampiric monsters, and those who are still alive need to band together and figure out a way to fight back...
Anyone who might have followed me on Deviantart long ago might remember I wrote a brief two chapters in this setting (and if you still possess an account, you can go and dig around and find it in my gallery, lol). I abandoned the idea after losing interest in vampires for a while, but now my love has been renewed. While I no longer have time or plans for a linear story, I still love working with the setting and thus plan to simply headcanon and do episodic writings on occasion, whenever the mood strikes.
This piece of art highlights probably the last time I attempted digital art, before I went back to purely traditional art. (I was never especially good at it, but I enjoyed trying! I never owned a tablet/pen, so this was all painstaking mouse work.) I've kinda fallen out of drawing altogether in the last several years, focusing purely on my writing instead. Wes's design is still relevant, though I think I have different ideas for Rui's outfit now. :3 Sketch was included cause I'm always fonder of my sketches than my finished works, lol.
And why am I digging up 16-year-old artwork to share with you all? Because I have another trick-or-treat surprise for you a little later tonight! Something more recent having to do with this AU! Please keep an eye out! <3
