Adonis, tr. by Khaled Mattawa, Selected Poems
A lot of times I was trying to navigate myself to feel less. When I was younger I thought eventually I would out grow the heaviness of feeling. I thought it was just something you experience because you didn’t know any better. Since I was so often told I needed to be less sensitive, less reactive, less emotional, less…. me, I connected emotions to the inability to have self control. I remember being in my early 20s shocked that I still felt so strongly, so vividly, so boldly. I wondered when would I out grow this “bad” thing. When will I maintain an equilibrium on how I feel? When will I get it right so everyone else can feel more at ease? After developing a love for deep introspection, I later realized…the equilibrium I was searching for was in first honoring myself completely as I am. Because to be human is to feel, and to be a Wild Woman is to experience every aspect of the human spectrum that we were gifted to obtain. Instead of running from my feelings I now channel them, instead of shutting off my emotions I now embrace them. And now as a Mother I can look my son in the eyes and say “ you absolutely have a right to experience what you are here to experience.”
