Untitled Lockpick-Homework Drabble
Something short and humorous I wrote as a warm-up.
He heard the clicks and tinks of metal before he found Marinette sitting under a tree in the courtyard, pins of various sizes and conditions were thrown in a pile by her side as she tinkered with something on her lap.
“Hey,” Félix greeted, plopping down diagonally to her, craning to peer at the– doorknob?
Félix blinked at the snatched-out piece of metal, glancing down at the open bag with more doorknobs poking out of it. He turned his attention back to Marinette’s hands, which were twisting a nail in the knob’s lock.
“Why are you picking a lock that isn’t locking anything?”
“So that I can learn how to lockpick.” The nail seemed to have gotten stuck, then after turning it a bit more, it curved over the lock.
Marinette groaned, throwing the nail on the pile of broken pins and nails before grabbing another pin.
“Are you planning something, ooorrrrrrr–” Félix asked, tugging at her bag for a better look at the locks in it.
He pouted, a bit disgruntled at not having been in on whatever this was before. Unless it was a last-minute thing, but by the amount of knobs and pins Marinette already had gathered, she had some time to call him into this.
“What? Oh no, this is for homework.”
“Huh?”
“We’re supposed to get to know and explain a mechanism for the class,” she explained, gesturing with the knob in her hand, “and I figured that knowing how to pick a lock is as good as knowing how it works.”
“Wait, for what class is this?” Félix pulled over his own bag, rummaging through his materials. “I don’t remember any work like this!”
“There must have been.” She shrugged. “I clearly remember M. Paytas telling us to choose a mechanism and get to know it inside and out.”
Félix stopped with his notebook open in his hands, slowly looking around it.
“Uhm. Marinette? Paytas only teaches biology.”
She frowned, looking up from the recently open lock in her hands.
“Do you mean the work on organisms?”
She raised a hand over her mouth, pink dusting her cheeks as she fixed the ground in a glare.
Heaving a deep breath, she sat up and stared straight into Félix’s eyes. “Anyway, I was planning on looting the drama club closet.”
