Digital cameras are making a comeback, think early 2000s photo dumps you’d see on MySpace. But this time, it’s more self-aware. We actually care about the settings and how to tweak them to get that effortless, natural effect, like a photo pulled straight from 2001 that was never uploaded.

For this set, I used the vivid setting on my handycam, a look that came naturally with digital cameras back then.

Here’s how it turned out.

I used plushies and an arcade theme to match the saturated tones. The bold colors worked well, especially against the soft, grainy texture that’s typical of old cameras, like the one I’m using in the video.

For my next blog, I’m planning to play around with blurry effects instead.

If you want that retro vibe fast, skip the expensive apps, Lightroom filters, or worrying about running out of film for your SLR. Camcorders are your best bet and they’re way easier and cheaper to use.

You can keep it normal, go underexposed, or try out a lomo effect. The nostalgic feels are just built in. For this video, I messed around with the IR effect. It’s got this cool mix of purple and red, super retro vibes. To top it off, I added synth music that ties it all together perfectly.

Pretty sure you’ll find the same effect on most camcorders, whether secondhand or the latest release.

The 144p resolution, grainy effects, and scattered audio yet why does it all look so good? It feels wrong but it feels so right. It’s familiar, yet the memory isn’t yours.

Camcorders and digital cameras are making a comeback! I treated myself to a camcorder as a birthday gift and as a fan of nostalgia, I couldn’t wait to start using it.

I read somewhere that if you want to edit, it’s best to pick your audio first and then match the pacing of your clip to it, and they were absolutely right.

There’s something about camcorder footage paired with 90s to early 2000s alternative music that feels like a distant memory. It’s unfamiliar because, back then, I was just a grade school student experiencing fleeting emotions and moments that didn’t quite make sense to me yet. Still, I watched time pass and now sometimes I wish I could go back to those childhood days.

For this video, I kept it simple: default camcorder settings, just the right exposure, normal lighting, and I let the natural beauty of the woods take center stage. Here’s the result:
