Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald
Ella Fitzgerald
Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra
"One of the conditions of seeing Monty in those years was that you were willing to listen to the voices of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra —endlessly. There was always a five-inch stack of their LP records on the phonograph."
"Fond as one might be of Ella and Frank, one eventually had to suggest to Monty that there were other singers. “Who?” he asked with beauteous innocence. The first few names I mentioned brought expressions of pain to his black brow. He was deeply disappointed that I could be so mistaken, so taken in by performers who weren’t artists, who were charlatans, dishonest. Irritated by that, I went straight to The Lady. “Billie Holiday,” I said. At which point, Monty raised a sigh so piteous and profound that there seemed no question but that it would shatter him, end his being. “Oh! Oh! Oh! I can’t listen to her. How can you listen to her?”

Nothing against Billie Holiday, but I feel just like Montgomery Clift. Who else is there to listen to? I bought June Christy's Something Cool a few weeks ago, and while it's a good album, it's not Ella. And the only counterpoint to Ella is Frank for the simple fact that he is so masculine. I could spend the rest of my life listening only to Ella and Frank, and to be clear, listening to Ella 90% of the time and listening to Frank for the other 10%. It's just nice that someone else, even if they're dead, gets me.

At 1:46, "Then consulted by Kennedy, Frank Sinatra has asked me to tea."
Currently reading, The Way You Wear Your Hat by Bill Zehme. On women, Sinatra states, "I crave variety." 🤔
Ella Fitzgerald 1968-ban látogatott először Budapestre, és az Erkel Színházban tartott, eseményszámba menő koncertje után egy cigánybálba is
Good article about Ella in Budapest.
"When I found that Ella and all the black performers or composers and writers were living on the other side of the town. I'd heard about that, and I said, 'I don't understand that. Why is that happening?' And someone said to me, 'Well, that's the life here in this state now, meaning Nevada.' I don't know whether it just meant Vegas or Tahoe or what, but I think it meant the whole state. There was a lot of bigotry involved there. I began to make noise about it...a few threats like, 'I'll walk. I'll go back to LA and uh, get yourself a new boy.' I couldn't understand why any of the guys who were in our group, working all the time--the blacks and the whites--why they were not allowed to live in the same hotel. Whether they were pink or black or yellow or tan, I don't care. If he performs well, that's the man I want to work for me. That doesn't make any difference. But it changed. It absolutely all changed. I did make some demands on people and said, 'Listen,' I said, 'If they all have to live on the other side of town then you don't need me.' You just don't need me, and uh, I think a few other entertainers began to pick up on that too, and they hollered. But I guess I was the biggest mouth in the town. In short, I loathe bigotry of any kind."
Sinatra Enterprises has uploaded the entire 1967 A Man and His Music II, and I am thrilled. They upscaled it as much as something from 1967 can be upscaled. Anyway, check it out. This whole show actually changed my life.

I need to visit these locations.
This article is about Count Basie, but I love the visual the author makes about Ella and Frank: "If ever there was a royal wedding, this was it."
Not specifically related to Ella and Frank, but what an embarrassment of riches we once had in this country. What happened to talent?!
Nice to know the background of this picture.
