Can a double spread illustration include a few small panels or talk bubbles? The main feature would still be the single cohesive illustration across two pages. Or would that count as a two-page comic?
Yes! Along with that, we have a few people who are doing a mix -- the distinction between comic and illustration is primarily for page count estimation reasons and having a good balance of single spreads and several page long stories.
Hi there! I put in my application a bit ago under heynhay and only checked one of the boxes for illustration/spread types because I, like a fool, misunderstood the form. Would it be possible to go back and indicate I'd do any of the non-comic layout types? Or have my app changed on the back end? :') thank you and apologies!

I'm mostly only curious but how many artists are going to be featured in this zine? Is there an estimate number of participants yet?
We estimate 30-40 contributors, though we're open to pushing or pulling the amount of participants depending on applications. It'll likely stay within a 10 person range of this estimate, though.
Hello! Is there a reason you will only choose a charity after contributors are chosen? /gen, I hope this doesn't sound rude. In my personal opinion I think it would be nice for artists to have an idea of what cause they might be donating to. Maybe provide a list of the charities you'll do a poll on? I'm open to hear why you want to keep it post-application of course. If I have misunderstood the terms, please let me know
We wanted to have more of an open discussion with all contributors once they were in about charity choices. It can be difficult to craft an intensive and genuinely altruistic list of charities off of just the mod team's experiences/knowledge, and there has been talk about working closely with local charities/organizations over donating to a general large foundation. We also wanted to reach out to specific charities beforehand to make sure we could use their likeness in informational or promotional content for the zine.
TLDR: Wanted more diversity in opinion and prefer a conversation post-applications to get everyone's personal insight on it.
Everyone wants their time, money, and effort to go to a cause they support, if you're wary about the fact that it isn't cemented yet, it's totally understandable. Hopefully this helps explain the thought process behind it!
do you need examples of comics to apply to do a comic piece? just curious.
Yes, you need at least one comic with 2+ pages of work within your portfolio if you are applying for a comic piece.

Hello! Is there a limit as to how many files we can add to the optional additional portfolios? Also, should the additional portfolio serve only as a general portfolio, or can it include more casual pieces like sketch dumps or reference sheets?
There is no limit, but there is also no guarantee that your additional portfolio will be completely looked through. Generally we take a look at it if your original link is broken, or we're curious on the breadth of your work on a broader level.

Can you give an example of "Double spread illustration -- Portrait illustration with text/sketch page"? I'm not sure what it entails
Example could include having one portrait (vertical) illustration on the left page and then sketches + doodles of your OCs on the right page with a text blurb that has information about them!

Hey! I'm thinking of applying and the main OC of mine I have in mind is my player character in a fan VSMP that will be starting in the near future. There is 0 connection to the actual story or characters of VSMP, it is simply a server using the plugin the actual server used with the same basic plot (people get trapped in a town with a few vampires, humans need to take down the vampires and vampires need to take down the humans). Would this character be allowed?

Hi! I had a question. In the rules you say that as an illustrator we need to make 2 illustrations, and later you mentioned that it might be possible to negotiate it up to 4.
Is it possible to negotiate 3 illustrations, or does everything have to be even number?
Everything has to be an even number for the sake of our layout. However, you could do a combination of illustrations and sketches/writing. For example, you could have 3 illustrations with 1 sketch page that has a bit of information on your OCs ingrained within it!

If accepted as a contributor, is there any limit to how many pieces/pages a person can do? Since this is an OC exploration zine, I thought multiple concepts for characters may be a little fun thing to do? I did see there was a minimum in the form! But is there a maximum?
The maximum page count will be 8 pages (4 spreads) for comics and, while the standard is 2 pages (1 spread), illustrators may do up to 4 pages (2 spreads).
This is a limit that can be negotiated while pitching your idea! For example, some people may be interested in doing a comic past 8 pages -- if it's vital to story development, we'll work something out to make sure they can tell their full story.
The most important thing to consider when pushing the maximum is if you can finish your work within the 2 month time limit : )!
Are non-human characters allowed? The story I'm working on now only features fantasy creatures, though they walk and talk like humans do. Is this a problem?

I'm curious, bc we can select what kind of art we wanna make for the zine. Say I apply to make both an illustration or comics and I'm more than happy to be either one, is that allowed? Or if I apply for comics, I'm making comics and so on so forth
You can apply to both! You will be considered for both roles during application review, and we'll likely reach out offering one or the other in the case of acceptance.
Even if I've never really posted about my OCs anywhere nor ever talked about their stories in public (they've only ever been stewing in my mind), am I still allowed to apply in the zine?
