I see a lot of people throwing around accusations of lack of transparency from the LGBTfans peeps regarding trademarking and the pledge.
One of the common things that keeps popping up is the request to get the filing number and the name of the person who filed for the TM, which you also need a physical associated street address for.
Letâs examine why itâs a terrible idea to ask this in public on the internet, and why the LGBTfans people might be reluctant to share.Â
Itâs the internet which means anyone could be reading including people who are mentally unstable, or simply hateful enough to physically harm or harass the person who filed for it. It also means anyone from the CW could be reading this and sending threats or trying to blackmail the person who filed for it into relenting. Need I remind you some people got real creepy and real obsessive when you mistakenly thought @commanderoswald had been to Jasonâs house?
Some of you have admitted your goal is to try and contest the TM, thatâs like handing your padlock to someone who wants to rob you.
If it isnât in the database yet you literally have no way to verify this information.Â
None of you have stated why you want this information beyond transparency.Â
If they filed for a TM they probably consulted with an attorney.
Also ever thought that they may just be humble and donât want to take credit for something that is meant to be for all of us? I donât know about you but Iâve noticed theyâre not bragging about it as individuals, not on tumblr, not on twitter, not on lchat. Why? Because theyâre not pretending to represent us. They are us.
Why is no one freaking out about the ⢠on âThe Fandom Revolutionâ˘â title of @lgbtviewersdeservebetter ? Is it... maybe... because... itâs something ridiculous to freak out about? Really itâs just something that is all around positive. Unless you want to go on a witch hunt and make sure every single person who has participated in this movement doesnât work for the CW? Itâs just such an absurd thing to freak out about. Pretty sure LGBTfans havenât directly been involved with trends for the last two weeks, they support the trending council over on twitter and thatâs it. They arenât trying to control any of us.
Even if they were trying to appropriate the movement what the hell could they do? They couldnât do shit about it, they can`t sue any of us who use it under fair use. Plus if they were CW, then youâd be falling right into their trap since youâre focusing and obsessing on a fucking trademark sign instead of planning, organize and brainstorming some additional moves and ways to further our cause. So... congrats, youâve played yourselves. Like if they are CW then youâre playing into their diversion tactic of obsessing on something so meaningless instead of expending your brain power doing something constructive, and if they arenât CW (spoiler alert: they arenât), then youâre just causing more in fighting and once again wasting time being unproductive.Â
Lastly I think it is pretty damn obvious why they filed for a TM with the pledge now out. It is a way to protect the image of the movement - do you remember how embarrassing it was for Black Lives Matters people when those two girls crashed the stage at a Bernie Sanders rally wearing BLM shirts? Those girls werenât officially affiliated with it in any way, but they had to spend a lot of time cleaning up after that mess specifically because they havenât protected the name.
Which also means that unless they have proof of their involvement with the movement from early on, that TM request will be denied. And guess what that means? That means it cannot be people from the CW and it cannot be people trying to profit off the movement to make a buck.Â
With the pledge now around it makes sense that they would want to protect our reputation as a fandom - a socially conscious fandom desirous of real change - as well as protect the signees. It protects us as fans from having our movement stolen by the CW. The TMing associated to the pledge means the CW can never ever fucking claim they came up with it as a âgenius move to apologiseâ. It came from us the fandoms, the viewers the public. It is ours.
For those complaining that this wasnât brought up before... Really? They were clearly working in direct link with showrunners and writers from Saving Hope who likely didnât want anything to be public until everything was cemented. I would bet my best tit that they were asked to keep quiet about it until everyone was ready to sign an the pledge went live.Â
Which by the way is fucking amazing. Itâs huge! No itâs not a contract but in some ways it is better. A contract uses the threat of legal repercussions which means your motives for doing things is purely so you donât get in trouble with the law. Itâs a transaction. A pledge on the other hand is a gesture of good faith, youâre instead putting your integrity on the line. Youâre offering your word and your word is tied to your reputation and your image as a person, as well as your honesty. No they wonât go to jail if they fuck up, but their future viewerships and future employers probably wonât trust them, and your word is incredibly important in this industry.Â
This is literally what we have been working for from the beginning - we now have something tangible to trigger and cement long-term change in the industry regarding the treatment of LGBTQ characters. We are actually getting shit done as a fandom, itâs pretty amazing. So I find it pretty interesting that someone who works in the industry and claims to be fighting for better representation, refuses to sign something that tangibly supports better rep and even offers guidelines on how to do that. I would definitely question this personâs motives and true alignment... are they really working for the movement?
Guess youâll have to stay tuned to find out.Â
