God's Gonna Cut You Down || Gideon & Jessica
Gideon’s eyes blaze with a white light and the markings visible on his skin begin to glow softly, as if the combat the darkness creeping up his body. It demands silence, and then asks a question, but Gideon continues to speak. “Vade, satana, inventor et magister omnis fallaciæ, hostis humanæ salutis. Humiliare sub potenti manu Dei; contremisce et effuge, invocato a nobis sancto et terribili nomine-“ Gideon’s voice is once again cut off as a hand wraps around his throat. It hurts all the more since the windpipe has already suffered abuse, and it’s worse now because the demon’s grip is far stronger than it’s disciple’s.
Gideon struggles with the arm for a moment, before his own hands shoot out. One cups the back of Jessica’s head, as if she were an infant needing support, and the other presses it’s palm against her forehead. A white, holy light blazes there, warm and bright in contrast with the shadows rooting him to the floor. The demon doesn’t release it’s grip but it roars in protest at the touch. There is a sudden slackening of the hand crushing his throat and Gideon sucks in a greedy breath before he tightens his grip on Jessica, refusing to let the demon tear her away. “Quem inferi tremunt, ab insidiis diaboli, libera nos, Domine.” he shouts. Jessica’s possessed body fights against him, and the hand cradling her head drops tohold her close, pressing her against him while the other remains on her forehead in something like benediction.
It’s a shadow of something more intimate, two people in a tight embrace, ignoring the chaos that was around them, but this was not so simple. They were the epicenter of the violence and it would end with them. Gideon’s words continue and when Jessica’s knees buckle, he just holds her tighter, ignoring the way she scratches and hit, trying to free herself. “Ut Ecclesiam tuam secura tibi facias libertate servire, te rogamus, audi nos.” Gideon shouted and his arm was tight around Jessica, because it wasn’t just recitation to him. He was praying for her salvation, and he was praying that she found her way back to the light that had been kept from her. Still, the ordeal was not an easy one, and he swayed lightly where he stood, but he refused to let her go until he was certain.
The demon burns from the inside, screaming out in anguished pain and horror as though the light from Gideon's hands might scorch holes through the blackened depths of the woman's eyes now. It's grip loosens upon his throat, merely focusing upon thrashing about and slashing its long nails at the grip. Her long, delicate fingers close around the man's wrist, but the demon cannot force her to pry his hand from her forehead.
Her small frame convulses in his grasp before Jessica's head is thrown back in an ungodly manner, eyes wide and as the black shadows drain from her, retracting from Gideon's form. Her jaw almost seems to unhinge itself as the demon expels itself from her in a forceful, heartbreaking cry. The black shadow dissipates in the air in a blast that's almost blinding, releasing it's hold upon Jessica and showing no signs of existence in the world. Its followers pause to glance up at the sky, at the absence of their God.
Gideon's arms slump from Jessica's frame as he stumbles backwards, seemingly drained as he regains his breath. Without the support, Jessica crumples to the ground in a mass of weak bones, dirty cloth, and broken spirits. How could she be so blind? God had not reached out His hands to her. The devil had trapped her in its grasp, blinded her to the light.
"My God," she cries out softly, the voice of a woman's hope and life destroyed. Her eyes, her own eyes, dart about the prison in fear and uncertainty, hands clawing behind her as she backs away from Gideon, from the rest of the people around her like she's a monster. She can still feel that demon upon her soul, devouring her life bit by bit.
Jessica would never make it to heaven now. The Lord would not accept her as one of its own. Not with the bodies crucified outside these walls. She had not been fighting for Him. How could she ever repent for these sins. Shifting to her knees, Jessica's body shakes as she stares down at her hands, heavy with the darkened stain of blood upon them that no one else could see. A hysterical sob wracks her chest and echoes through the spacious hall. Jessica Clarke is a sinner.
