View of the city of Toledo
Toledo
So, the next stop on my Spain adventure was the beautiful city on a hill, Toledo. It’s so picturesque and breathtaking that you can’t take your eyes of it. The other students and I took a bus from Madrid to Toledo, which only took about an hour. We first drove to a lookout point where we could see over the whole city. Its beauty amazed me and it looked exactly what you think an ancient Spanish city would look like. We went on a tour of the city, through the old streets, into the cathedrals, and stopped at the little souvenir shops. My favorite part of this trip was the city in itself and imagining what it must’ve been like hundreds of years ago. I think the fact that Toledo has water all around and an ancient bridge leading into the city gives it such a romantic feeling that only draws people in even more.
Plaza de Toros - Bull trick show in Madrid!
Plaza de Toros
My adventure in Madrid continued one night when I went to a bull trick show! Instead of the gruesomeness of the famous Spanish bullfights, we went to an arena where trained men did tricks with very dangerous bulls! They jumped over them, taunted them, and gave us a very entertaining performance. I was so shocked when I saw the first bull come running out into the ring and the fearlessness that these men showed casually jumping and flipping over these raging beasts. The night was filled with a lot of excitement and laughter and a great look at Spanish culture!
Valencia
I know it's been over a year since I've updated my blog, but lately I've really been missing my time in Madrid, so I thought I would share some more of my adventures!
At the end of September, it came time to take a trip to one of the famous beach side cities in the South of Spain, Valencia. My Norwegian friend, Andrea, and I decided that we should take a weekend trip to Valencia to do nothing but lie in the sun, eat the famous Paella, and relax. So, we bought two bus tickets, left on a Thursday and after 6 hours or so, arrived in the beautiful old city of Valencia. The first thing we did was tried to locate our Hostel. It was somewhere in the middle of the city and like most Spanish cities, streets and street names are based off the old, very old layout of the city, which only made matters more difficult in trying to find our way around, but where would the adventure be without getting lost? Our hostel turned out to be fairly nice, and we shared a room with six other guys. Can you imagine two girls sharing a very small room with six guys? Six very attractive Australian guys with accents, cute accents! Everyone was very friendly in the hostel and was willing to help us find our way around and gave us advice on what the best things were to do and see in Valencia. Of course, all Andrea and me wanted to do was go to the beach and soak up the sun. So, we found the bus stop, made our way to the nearest beach and spent the next few hours relaxing and lying on the beach. We proceeded to do this the next couple of days as well.
We also wanted a tour of Valencia, especially since it was so historic and used to be home to the Arabs, and for this reason the architecture of many of the buildings was gorgeous! Later on our second night in Valencia we took a free walking tour from a guide that worked at our hostel. We were with a few other travelers as well, a Frenchman, a German, and a couple Ukrainians. The tour was great, we saw a castle, cathedrals, beautiful fountains, and the best part of the night was ending it with Paella. Valencia is famous for its Paella, so we had to find a good restaurant. Andrea and I searched and searched until we found one where the Paella was made with rabbit, which is why it’s called Paella Valenciana. It was so delicious and so Spanish!
Our last day in Valencia was spent lying on the beach with our new Australian friend, and ate a lot of bread, nutella, and coconut that was sold fresh on the beach! We swam in the Mediterranean (which wasn’t as cold as I thought) and relaxed for the remainder of the day. This was a great way to end the trip, despite the fact that I was as red as a tomato after three full days of lying on the beach! But it was worth it, the beach, the ocean, the Paella, the new friends, all of it.
Here's a short video of Plaza Mayor :)
Today I decided to go somewhere new, so I ate lunch in Plaza Mayor...so beautiful! It's right down my street and there's always something new to see. Afterwards, I walked towards the palace and got some more pictures from the front; so majestic! :)
I ate lunch here today and just sat and relaxed for a couple hours.....so peaceful and beautiful here.
On my way to my house this morning, I walked by the Palacio Real (Royal Palace). Here's a video and you can hear the accordion in the background, which I hear everyday passing this area :)
These are all pictures I took this morning on my way to the metro. I pass these buildings and streets almost everyday and I'm still amazed at how beautiful they are!
Hi everyone, it's been awhile since I last wrote. On Fridays I don't have class, so today was just a nice relaxing, stress-free day. I went with a friend to Retiro Park to just walk around and eat some ice cream. This park still amazes me because every time I go, I discover something new about it; simply beautiful. Afterwards we went shopping on Gran Via, one of Madrid's busiest streets in the middle of everything. They have some of the best stores here, and the fashion here is amazing. Hopefully I'll get some sleep tonight and I'm looking forward/kind of worried for tomorrow because I'll be going to my first bullfight! I've heard they can get pretty gruesome, so we shall see how that goes. I've heard it's all about the experience though and can't wait to find out!
My friends and I ventured to this park on Friday and were amazed at how big it is. It's beautiful and already has leaves changing colors for the fall. It was very peaceful and relaxing and seems like the perfect place to go when you need a break from the crazy Madrileño life. I definitely plan on returning here to stroll or read a good book :).
El Palacio Real (The Royal Palace)
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this. We had the chance to walk through and visit all of the rooms, including the armory, the throne room, the dining hall, and many more. I was just amazed at the amount of detail in every square inch of the rooms. I felt like I had walked onto a movie set, it didn't feel real. It felt exactly the way someone would think walking into a "royal" room would feel like; very majestic-like. I would walk into one room and be in awe, and then it seemed as if every room just kept getting better and better. This was probably one of the most beautiful sites I've seen in my life.
So, after our study abroad meeting this afternoon and walking around with some of the students for awhile, I headed back to my house on Calle Mayor by myself. I was really hungry and so decided to go on a little "adventure" by myself. I looked at the time, which was about 8:00 pm, and thought ok the perfect time to go to El Mercado de San Miguel, which is probably one of the most famous markets in Madrid. I got excited especially when I remembered seeing it on the TV show, "From Spain with Love," and decided that I needed to try some food there. (The video is posted above :) I found a small stand and bought three "croquetas" which look like mini corn dogs, but instead are filled with this really good cheese, and then ordered a "vaso" or glass of sangria and it tasted delicious! I stood at the counter, ate, and just looked around at all of the people surrounding the inside of the market and pushing their way through for some tapas and wine. When I finished I bought a cup of nutela flavored gelato and just walked around the market and thought to myself, "Am I really here??" I became even happier on my way back to the house when I realized that this market is only a mere 5 minutes away! I think this little outing gave me a little confidence boost, especially considering this morning I was pretty scared to leave the house. I know now the importance of taking things step by step, one day at a time.
