Finn had finally had enough courage to reach out to Ruby to cash in the raincheck he had promised her the last time they had run into one another. Their coffee date had had to be postponed due to an unforeseen situation at the diner. The one time he actually wanted to be away from the place and it called him back. But they had promised to meet up again but they hadn’t exactly made any concrete plans. Should he be cheesy and pick the diner, the place they had had their first official date? No. That was the last place he wanted to be. Their first time reconnecting again needed to be in a place away from distractions, a place where they were less likely to run into her family or friends.

The ice rink had been a fleeting thought, a simple ‘what about the ice rink’ text to her. He hadn’t thought she would agree. He hadn’t picked up a pair of skates, much less been on the ice, since high school but if that is where Ruby wanted to meet, then that is where they would go. The place was closed for the night but Finn used his charm and was able to get a key to the place. They only had an hour so he wanted to make sure they made the most of their time. She was supposed to be meeting him here so he headed inside, grabbing a pair of skates from the shelf. He walked over to one of the benches and laced them up, standing up slowly to get used to the feeling again. @missruby-austin

Ruby had spent the last couple weeks in a constant state of stress and remorse. It seemed everyone in her family was going through the same. When she saw how worried her aunt Nancy and Shelby were, it just made her feel worse in knowing that she could have prevented this. If only she had asked Hal more questions instead of absentmindedly going along with what he said. Her sister often complained that Ruby was in her own world a lot of the time. She never meant to come across as self-centered but she was inside her own head a lot and sopmetimes failed to see when her family members needed her. When Finn and her had started texting again, it was a nice distraction from all of it. Talking to someone from her past who wasn’t involved. When he suggested going to the skating rink she had debated.

Although she had made a brief appearance at the Cherry Blossom festival, having a good time while her cousin was missing felt wrong. Still, the idea was appealing to her. She rarely went skating anymore. She rarely had time to do fun things for herself. She entered the building, zipping her coat up as she drew closer to the ice and felt the cold air. Her skates were in her hands. She wasn’t even sure if they would still fit. She was surprised when she saw the man, on the bench but it instantly elevated her mood slightly. He still had the power to do that, despite everything they had been through and everything that was going on now. She stared at him in a moment of confusion before she made her way towards him. “Are we seriously the only ones here?” she asked him, looking around. She was somewhat relieved that this was the case, as she wasn’t really wanting to deal with a crowd.

You know she’s actually listening to Blink-182 right now just because she found them in this playlist she was looking for for angry music?” She said and shook her head. “She’s getting closer and closer to being a teenager and it’s wild to me.” Stevie said before smiling as the other looked at the baby. “Thank you. It’s actually Javier’s sister’s name. There’s a whole story there, so I’ll spare the details, but we have just been calling her Ali.”

“Classic. That was my study music back in the day. It probably helped me pass my SAT’s” Ruby told the woman with a smile. “Maybe there’s hope for the younger generation after all. The kids at my work only want to listen to that Cocomelon shit, and I swear it’s designed to mentally torture adults.” she said jokingly and let out a sigh. She smiled watching the baby sleeping peacefully. She resisted the urge to ask to hold her because she didn’t wan’t to disturb her and besides, it always gave her a sad feeling, knowing she may never experience holding a baby of her own in her arms. “That’s cute. And it suites her. Are you and Javi not...” she trailed off, before she shrugged. “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to pry. It’s just this is a small town and you hear things.” she explained.

“I am?” She asked curiously, not really finding herself to be charming at all. Or even that good at socializing. She used to be better at this whole thing, but losing the man she loved really brought her down out of fear of losing someone again. “I can imagine.” Dominique said, but she still didn’t drink often or go out like that. Maybe she needed to. “I know. I guess I’m just unsure how to do all this, you know?” She always felt between not ready to try to move on and that she should’ve been ready already. “I guess I wouldn’t know.” She said, not being the oldest on either side of her family.

“You definitely are. Don’t sell yourself short, girl. You’ve got a lot going for you” she assured her with a smile. She remembered the feeling of being single again after her divorce and she understood that it was difficult. Ruby hadn’t really made any meaningful connections with anyone since Graham. Just the odd random hook up to subside the emptiness she felt. She gave a nod. “I think that’s the natural way to feel, but it’s probably not as scary as you’re thinking it is.” she said and shrugged. “It’s a lot sometimes. Consider yourself lucky.” she joked. She shifted and got up slowly letting out a groan. “God I swear I feel like I’m eighty sometimes. Too much time sitting in my office.” she offered a hand to Dominique to pull her up. “Come on, we should probably get your little one home. Maybe you’ll get lucky and she’ll take a nap after burning off all this energy.”

Twenty-one days. It had been twenty-one days since she had seen her son. And every day, she was getting worse. She wasn’t sleeping well and she wasn’t eating much. She called and left voicemails and texts on Hal’s phone, but there was never anything back. She had been laying in her bed most of the time, but today, she was on her couch in the living room. Hearing the door, she looked up with hope that it was Hal coming in, but her face fell seeing Ruby. She wasn’t upset to see her niece, but she was disappointed in herself for getting her hopes up again that her son was back. She barely listened to her as she said she got food, but sighed as she heard that Shelby said she hadn’t eaten. She didn’t want anyone to worry about her when there were more important things. She shook her head and sighed. “I talked with Brandon at the festival.” She explained. “But no word.”

Ruby’s heart sank a little when she saw her aunt’s expression drop. She had been feeling that heaviness in her chest -guilt- since the beginning. She had told Nancy that she had drove him to Williamsburg when she had first reached out to ask if she had seen Hal. Before it was a state of emergency, and what she thought was an innocent trip to Williamsburg to buy a birthday present. She couldn’t even imagine a good reason for Hal to do this to Nancy on her birthday. She wasn’t on the best of terms with her own mother, or even her father, who wasn’t half the parent Nancy was but she couldn’t bare to put either of them through this. She started to dish up a plate for her aunt. “Well, at least they know. Maybe they’ll start investigating if he doesn’t come back.” Hal’s phone was showing that he was reading their messages. The best case scenario was that it was in fact him, just ignoring them. Just fed up with feeling like he was being treated a certain way. The worst case scenario, Ruby couldn’t even bring herself to think about. She set the plate down and cleared he throat. “I told dad about this, and you know what he said? ‘Good for him. It’s about time he got out from under his mother’s iron fist’.” Ruby realized after she said it that maybe it wasn’t best to talk about it but she couldn’t believe that this was the response he had to his nephew being missing. She sighed heavily and sat down on the couch, tears rimming her eyes. “I can’t apologize to you enough, Auntie. If I had any idea what was in his head that day, I would have never....” she took a breath letting it out slowly.

Yes, for the most part but it also depends on the person and what they've done. She is pretty understanding and knows that everyone makes mistakes but if someone out right double crosses her or uses her, she can't let it slide.

Ruby walked up the stairs to her aunt’s, arms full of paper take out bags. Since dropping Hal off that day, she could not stop thinking about him and worrying about him, much like Nancy was doing. He wasn’t answering her texts, but he wasn’t answering anyone in the family. She swore to herself she was going to kill that kid when she got her hands on him for lying to her. For making her feel like she was to blame and for worrying her sick. And not to mention worrying her Aunt Nancy so much. She hated seeing the woman like this. She didn’t bother knocking as she walked inside. “I brought Chinese food. I thought you might like something other than pub food, and Shelby said you haven’t been eating.” Without a word she started clearing the table to make room for the take out containers. She paused looking up at her aunt. “I heard you’ve been talking to the police. Any luck?” she asked.

“Not fully, but I came in to do a few things.” She told her and kept rocking the bassinet with her foot. “Please, if I was able to do that, I wouldn’t have been put on bed rest.” Stevie laughed softly and listened to her. “Good. She took a deep breath and nodded before rubbing her neck. “God, that sounds so frightening. I don’t know how I ever got Julien when I did. I’m so awkward when it comes to these things.” She sighed before biting her lip and stared at her. “I hope it doesn’t. I’m going to be a stammering mess when I talk him about it. Why are these things so difficult?” She asked and put her head in her hands for a moment before looking back at Ruby. “I don’t see how you do it. I can’t even think about having a fling. You see how I am just by the possibility of a date.” She laughed a little, more at herself than anything. “Maybe that’s what I need. A bad influence.”

She looked at her friend smiling sympathetically. “Well if you did it once, you can do it again I’m sure. Besides, you’re a lot more charming than you give yourself credit for, Dom.” she let out a sigh and shrugged. “They aren’t for me, but usually a little liquid courage helps, I’m not gonna lie.” she grinned, and thought about how that seemed to be how she met men, at least in her adult years. Usually at a bar or party or something with alcohol involved. Not that she wasn’t confident when she didn’t drink, but it definitely eliminated the fear of rejection. She shrugged once more. “To be fair, my situation is different from yours. I just got used and dumped. Divorced.” she corrected herself. “You lost someone you loved.” she looked at her in silence for a few seconds before a small smile appeared on her face. “I mean, I’m usually the bad influence as the oldest in my family.” she had always tried to be the opposite for sister and her cousins who she had mothered since they were babies, but many times she slipped up.

The bar was her third baby. She poured her heart and soup to happen. “I don’t think that’s possible.” Shelby couldn’t remember a time she’d ever seen her mom truly embarrassed about anything. “No. I get it. “I’m sure they don’t have as many fun things on their drink menu as your mom does.” Ruby said looking it over. “But I guess we’ll have to try them all just to be sure.” she said half-jokingly. She always had to remind herself that she wasn’t in her twenties anymore when she was with her younger cousin, and that hangovers hit her twice as hard. Though she couldn’t remember the last time she had had a fun girls night out. Her sister seemed too busy with her work and most of her friends had kids. She let out a laugh. “Hey, they didn’t call me Ruby-boobies in senior year for nothing. Don’t ever tell that to my dad, though.” she pointed a warning finger at her cousin before waving away her comment. “Yours are nice too, don’t say that.” she nodded putting down the menu. “I mean, overworked and stressed out over life in general.” she sighed, thinking about the awkward texts she had sent to her ex-husband on Valentine’s day and how him not responding had only made her feel worse. “But okay other than that. How about you, Shelbs?”

“Well I mean, it won you over.” Finn chuckled, the memory of the day he had asked her out coming to the forefront of his mind. They had been friends for so long and he had wrestled with his feelings for her for weeks, telling himself that asking her out could ruin their friendship, especially if things went wrong. He had failed miserably in his attempt to hide how he felt for her, his jealousy at every boy who talked to her always threatened to surface. Finally, however, after some advice from his parents, he had bit the bullet and risked it all. He smiled, the dimples in his cheeks becoming quite pronounced, like they often did around her. “A relationship is 50/50. That includes milkshakes. And fries.” He added, clearing his throat, trying to think of something to fill the void so the awkwardness he felt would disappear. He hadn’t forgotten the words he’d said to her, the way he’d stormed out, he wanted to take it all back. To fix them. Not just the romantic part, that was unfortunately a lost cause it seemed. How could she still want to be with him after all this time? He had hurt the one person he loved and then left without so much as an explanation. No, it was too late for them. Still, they could salvage some semblance of the friendship they had once had. “It did,” she admitted, smiling at him. she had to admit that she had been surprised when Fin asked her out. She didn’t think that he thought of her as more than a friend. But it very quickly started to make sense to both of them. For a while it seemed like they were a perfect fit. “Not when you date me it doesn’t.” she teased him letting out a laugh. “You must have forgotten that part.” Talking him made her feel lighter than she had felt in these past several months. Since the divorce last summer, followed by the earthquake which almost destroyed her daycare and injured her, she had admittedly been feeling lost, and desperatelt trying to feel some semblance of how she use to be. Seeing Finn again helped her feel a small piece of that. She rolled her eyes at his comment. “Oh, don’t flatter yourself too much. Nobody really goes on facebook anymore these days.” she joked. “And I still want to hear about what you’ve been up to.” Ruby told him. “Yeah. The Hillside Cafe is still around. I know the owner, in fact. Maybe we could go there?” she suggested, knowing it was close and she didn’t have her car at the moment.

The familiar smile, that infectious laugh, it was what had made him love Ruby even more and seeing it again, well, it brought back all the feelings he’d buried. He never stopped loving her, and had loved no other since. Sure he’d dated others in London, a man had needs but none of them were truly fulfilled. Not like they had been with Ruby. Wrapping his arms around her, her head nestled into his chest, the gentle breeze carrying the smell of her perfume to his nose. He inhaled softly, the scent bringing back the many date nights when she’d worn it for the first time, his brain committing the scent to memory, it was all overwhelming and even though he could have held her for the rest of the day, he didn’t want to make it awkward. His lips upturned, his dimples becoming pronounced more as he smiled at her affectionately. “So do you, Rub. But of course, you always did. The only person to ever make me speechless. And we both know how much I love to talk.” Finn teased, rubbing his arm where she had slapped him. “And for good reason! Have you been working out? That’s going to leave a mark.” The sense of familiarity as if they hadn’t left things unsaid, hadn’t ended things badly, it felt good but he knew that eventually they were going to have to talk about it. Just not today. “I remember it slightly differently. We got the milkshake, and the straws but if I recall, you had most of it drank before I could even put mine in the cup. You had whipped cream on your nose and a horrible brain freeze. You were uncomfortable but I found it incredibly adorable.”

She smirked, rolling her eyes at his comment. “Still a wise guy, I see.” she teased him. “Not to mention a charmer.” her smile grew as she stared up at him. She suddenly wished she took take back every nasty thing she had screamed at him the day they had broke up. That things hadn’t ended on such bad terms, but her heart was shattered that day. What happened with the baby had been too much for their teenage brains to comprehend at the time. A hand raised to her mouth trying to hide her laugh as he reminded her of what happened during their first date as a couple, if you didn’t count the spring formal he had asked her to. “Well, what can I say? You snooze you lose, pal.” she told him. Her smile faded a little as she held his gaze and was hesitant to ask him. “Do you.. have time to catch up? Obviously not here, with the renovations. But we could grab a coffee or something? I would love to hear all about London. I may or may not have creeped your facebook page a little over the years.” she admitted.
