Tomblr Book Club reloaded!
Once upon a time, Tom Burke and his adorable habit of carrying books around made a few of us apply our Strikean detective skills to find out what it was he was reading. (Call this stalking if you want but, really, any book nerd knows that carrying a book around in public means any fellow book nerd will try to read its title, and just because you’re Tom Burke it doesn’t mean you get exempted from that rule.)
We did find out a few titles (The Black Mystery Book™️ though, to this day, remains just that - a mystery) and added the plays and book-based movies and tv shows he’d been in and books he’d mentioned - and initiated the Tomblr Book Club, reading titles from that list together.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to pick another Tomblr Book Club Read! The plan is to start reading in February/March, but we’d like to decide on a title now so people have time to join and get their copies.
Any Tom Burke fan or otherwise interested party is invited to join us! If you want to join, just reply to this post and let us know!
The rules are simple: Join us, get your book and start posting about it on your tumblr (this book club is tumblr only) with the hashtag #tomblr and #(booktitle) on the agreed-upon starting date. We’ll divide the book into parts and set up a convenient posting schedule.
@notmanthelessbutnaturemore and I went through all the titles we found and narrowed the list down to…
1) Chéri by Colette (fiction, 122 pages, Tom was in a 2009 film based on the novel)
2) The City Of Beautiful Nonsense by E. Temple Thurston (fiction, 280 pages, paperback copy seen lying around in Tom’s film “The Souvenir”)
3) The Doctor’s Dilemma by G.B. Shaw (stage play, 192 pages, Tom played Louis Dubedat in a National Theatre production in 2012)
4) Marathon Man by William Goldman (fiction, 236 pages, Tom played “Doc” in the 2017 radio play and in the sequel, “Brothers”)
5) The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami (fiction, 607 pages, Tom mentioned it in a magazine article)
