Writing Update: 7/26/2026

Paper Men

I’m still working on Chapter 32.

The re-read took way longer than I thought it would. I think I ended up finishing it towards the end of May? That sounds about right. Fixed a few typos, probably created a few more by accident (for some reason, the formatting always gets messed up when I post to AO3. It frustrates me to no end).

Anyway, I’m actively drafting the next chapter. I’ve messed around with the Henry-Evelyn scene quite a bit, testing out different points of view, different approaches, and I think I’ve got it figured out now.

Like the previous chapter, this is a huge chapter for Henry. He cycles through so many complicated emotions: about his actions, his past, even his feelings toward Evelyn and her family. I think I’ve zeroed in on them pretty well, but I’m still figuring out the best way to portray them. I’m currently re-reading some of his old PM scenes as well as his scenes from It to see if I can come up with some new ideas.

But all in all, it’s coming along pretty well! If things stay on track, I should have it finished sometime next month.

The rest of the season is already mapped out as well. I know every scene. I know exactly how the season ends. The final scene is practically burned into my brain. So once I conquer this chapter, it should be smooth sailing.

I just like to draw this weirdo, still listening to the audio book btw cuz it's long as hell and I made a pause after listening all day nonstop

Kinda went to the summer camp trip to see my friends off, now I'm again a hotline support for one of them cuz they decided to go back to the camp to earn more money and things happen again

She's very.. anxious? And our other friend is being difficult. Actually feels like after 3 years of being friends we suddenly start to realise she's... Not a good friend, cuz she will ignore you after some small thing she blamed you for and spending 99% of time with people she just met instead of people she knows for 3 years. Just imagine being trapped for 2 weeks with your friend that ignores your existence and being dramatic about small things one can solve by just talking. Sure I'm not there, I wasn't there first time, I mean, in the camp, cuz my health doesn't allow me to. But yeah, one friend doesn't even text me and the other is calling/texting me all the time because of her and other troubles

Just crossed my mind.

Would Evelyn lie for Henry ? (Did she, already ?) (As in "he was with me, he can't have done that !" )

And by extension, would she lie for Patrick, or Vic ? (Or Belch, but it looks like he avoid being in situations where he needs an alibi)

I am not talking about full on crimes (no murder, no aggression or violence...) more like tiny offenses (degradation of school property, slashing tires... stomping on a neighbor flower bed 👀)

After the last couple of chapters, the answer might change, tho. Patrick was not "kind" but he helped her, while Henry didn't... But her past with Henry is still pretty significant, and she doesn't want his dad being mad at him... mhhhh 🤔🤔

Hmm, interesting question.

As a child, Evelyn definitely had a more black-and-white way of thinking. To her, all lying was bad regardless of the situation, so she was a bit of a tattletale, even when it came to Henry. If she ever saw him doing something he wasn't supposed to be doing, she would tell him to stop and then go get a teacher. She never lied for him, and Henry never asked her to. Having a girl protect him like that would be pretty emasculating. He would rather just take the punishment.

Now, Evelyn realizes there are times when you have to lie. And especially now, with Henry in such a vulnerable position, she would absolutely lie to protect him: from getting expelled, from going to jail, from getting in trouble with his father... especially getting in trouble with his father. Even if it compromised her morals, Evelyn would do anything she could to keep Henry safe. But it would eat away at her, bit by bit, and put a serious strain on their relationship.

So, yes, Evelyn would lie for Henry, even in the more serious situations.

Reggie... I mean, she might tell a little lie if he needed an alibi for being late to class or something. As you said, I don't see Reggie needing Evelyn to do something like that very often, if ever.

Victor... yeah, forget it. That boy knows better than to get in trouble, so Evelyn wouldn't bother lying for him. Serves him right for acting like such an idiot.

But Patrick, now that's an interesting one. Before the most recent events, Evelyn wouldn't even consider lying for Patrick, but given the current state of their relationship, I could see her telling the occasional lie to help him out. For very minor things, of course.

For example: Say Patrick had gotten caught breaking into the science lab. A teacher saw him with the janitor's keys and naturally assumed he had stolen them. In a situation like that, I could see Evelyn telling a little white lie to keep Patrick from getting in trouble. She would step in and say that she had asked Mr. Marsh for the keys because she had forgotten something in the science lab earlier that day, and Patrick was just coming along. Little things like that she would do, but she wouldn't let it become a frequent thing.
