Tommy Craggs, the author of a piece referenced in my Cam Newton-polarizing blog post, emailed me a response this morning.
My story was about the “reflexive pandering by the media to a wave of disgust that never quite arrived.” It specifically took issue with ESPN’s characterization of Cam as “polarizing.” You either didn’t read it, or you are so blinded by your animus toward me that you didn’t realize you were making the dumb person’s version of the very same argument.

Actually I don’t agree with Craggs’ argument, and I felt my piece made that clear. In his piece for Slate, Craggs referenced a negative, pre-draft scouting report from Nolan Nawrocki, a letter to the editor criticizing Newton for his end-zone celebration, Peter King’s criticism of Newton’s “icon and entertainer” comment and various other harmless slights as being part of a now-dying “old culture.” Craggs frames the Newton criticisms as examples of the kind of bigotry that plagued Joe Gilliam, Marlin Briscoe and countless other old-era black quarterbacks.
I disagree with the entire inference. Quarterbacks are scrutinized harshly and occasionally unfairly by football people and the media. This has always been the case. Terry Bradshaw, a quarterback from the South, was drafted No. 1 in 1970. The media questioned his intelligence publicly and trashed him early in his career. My friend, Jeff George, the No. 1 pick in the 1990 draft, was trashed over his personality by Mel Kiper and others in the media. Many of us in the media trash Johnny Manziel. We didn’t like his money-sign celebration when he played at Texas A&M.

#STRUCTURES have announced a farewell tour with Obey The Brave, Exalt, & Villians. See the band’s official announcement below.
"We are saddened to announce that Structures will be going on an indefinite hiatus come 2015. This is not an easy decision considering how much we have put into this band since it’s inception in 2009, however we all feel that a healthy break is necessary for each of us for various personal reasons. We are all on good terms and have made this decision collectively.
We want to thank all of our fans, new and old, for supporting the music we have made throughout the last few years. You are what allowed us to live out our dreams and for that we are forever grateful. To all of the bands we have toured with and the friendships that have been formed along the way, thank you for the unforgettable times on the road and the great shows that we’ve shared. Thank you to Sumerian Records for giving us a platform to release our music. Thanks to Outerloop Management, Good Fight, Pantheon, Avocado and The Agency Group for all your help through the years.
This tour will be a farewell tour of sorts, however, we are not fully closing the idea of picking things back up when the time is right. Who knows what tomorrow brings.
We’re excited to have Nick joining us on these dates. It only makes sense that we finish off how we started. We will be playing songs from our entire catalogue.
Looking forward to playing some fun shows around home with Obey The Brave, our hometown friends in Exalt and Villains. See you at the dates below and thanks for your support, we love you all.”
