Mitski Allegations Rehashed
I’m going to try and make this as cut and dry as I can. How I’m connected to this isn’t that complicated so I’ll explain my and Ambers online friendship in bullets:
- Amber and I mutually followed each other on Tumblr in 2015 as we were both fans of Mitski.
- We conversed sporadically for about a year.
- She never mentioned to me ever meeting Mitski even though we occasionally would talk about her music.
- I unfollowed her once I realized that her behavior changed when it seemed that she was admitting to trying to convince people to take their own lives and also bullying others who were obviously dealing with mental health issues.
- I didn’t block her so she continued to like and interact with my posts until I’m assuming she realized that I didn’t want to speak with her anymore and I also assumed she had unfollowed.
- I had eventually wiped my account clean of my personal info and it evolved into a normal page where I simply reposted photos.
- August 2019 her allegations against Mitski were beginning to be taken seriously. (Back then, rightfully so.)
- It was eventually confirmed by Amber’s brother that Amber suffers from delusions as a symptom of psychosis and has accused virtually everyone in her life of some form of assault.
- Because of Amber disclosing her personal issues to me when we were friends, this wasn’t hard for me to believe.
Even with this information, shockingly this situation actually has nothing to do with Amber at all. This is simply background info that further invalidates the newer accusations against Mitski starting to take hold. If you are a fan or even a casual fan of Mitski, she makes it clear that the reason why she is very private, and doesn’t talk about her background in relation to her parents, is because she does not want their privacy to be compromised based off of her own decision to be a public figure. This is not an uncommon ideology that many musicians share regardless of how famous they are.
When I see twitter accounts like @chickenpaprika and @phendetta spreading information based off of a random tumblr account (much like the one you’re reading from now) on who Mitski’s father is and ultimately reopening a pandora’s box that leads back to the validity of the allegations, I can’t help but question the overall motives for doing so. It could be boredom or just a general lack of critical thinking skills but I’m assuming it’s a mixture of both.
There is evidence of a John Laycock who does have ties to Zaire but ultimately this still doesn’t confirm that this is even Mitski’s father. The main accusation is that Mitski’s father is a war criminal who is also a CIA agent. Whether this is factual information or not is beyond me because if I cared enough to look that far into her background I’d see that there’s very little concrete evidence that the man even exists (whether that’s strange or not to anyone is up to them) let alone has participated in what these accounts are claiming. But because if this, for some reason it was assumed that Mitski’s father must be a CIA agent. Again, these are accusations from a random tumblr account. The account has been stripped of all of its posts since February.
Mitski attended various public schools and went to a public college. I find it hard to believe that a CIA agent, who moves virtually twice a year, would allow their child to attend anything less than a private institution. That’s just me.
The account also claimed that Mitski’s full name wasn’t available and was stripped from the internet but a simple Google search will also prove that to be false. Where my real issue comes up is that most people are aware that even if you’re simply pondering information on celebrities, there are people who will run with it and spread it as fact even if that wasn’t your intention.
Of course people are now questioning wether the allegations were a hoax set up by Mitski’s team to distract from her father’s (again unconfirmed) war crimes. Half of this theory has obviously been casted away. Back to Amber: she’s a real person. To me twitter user @chickenpaprika is letting the recent attention they’re getting go to their head to the point that they’re seemingly entertaining these sex trafficking accusations as a more probable truth. But it’s definitely being more pushed by the people in their comments. Interacting with them to me looks like “I’m trying to further this narrative, but I don’t want to explicitly say that it’s factual so I’ll interact with other accounts who obviously believe these things to be true.”
One of the few factual things that the tumblr account stated was that the CIA actually has been implicated in p*dophilic sex trafficking. Due to this the general narrative has now morphed into:
Mitski’s father is a CIA agent → The CIA has been implicated in sex trafficking → Therefore there is more validity or probability that Mitski in fact was involved in child sex trafficking
I say all of that to get to this: Literally none of this has been proven as fact. Assuming that because Mitski doesn’t discuss her father’s personal history and he happens to work in government MUST mean that he’s a CIA agent is one of the more cartoonish but ultimately not shocking reaches I’ve heard.
To further entertain the fact that proven false allegations might now have some validity based off of a conspiracy tumblr post not only deflates the seriousness of p*dophilia and child sex trafficking but is ultimately making me think that the real issue here is much deeper than the surface level conversation.
I also think the relentless digging into this person’s background is more of a means to discredit her fairly new success rather than pure curiosity. Something that many white artists can easily escape.
I didn’t want to do this but I’m absolutely pulling the race card.
The main issue here has been addressed. But there’s a very much racially motivated (whether it’s conscious or not) attempt, not only in this specific instance, to somehow disprove what little information Mitski has rightfully given to the public. Many white artists like Clairo and King Princess have obviously very successful parents and are also extremely private. While both have been called out, people seem to have a more intense interest in figuring out the background of an Asian woman in a white dominated field regardless of it being absolutely no one’s business. Many white gatekeepers have also accused her of being an industry plant because they “don’t know anyone who personally listens to her.” In Mitski’s case it’s obviously a never ending cycle.
Twitter user @phendetta is now disguising this conversation as “not wanting to support generationally wealthy” musicians regardless of talent. I highly doubt that if Mitski’s family is wealthy that it ever went towards her career. It’s evident in the earlier parts of her career. And even then...most popular musicians obtain either wealth or extreme financial security anyways so what is even the point? Nothing.
Even with the obvious pitfalls of class and wealth distribution, regardless of financial background, race is the pinnacle of privilege and ultimately if Mitski’s family is wealthy she will still be subjected to racist infrastructure that ultimately doesn’t serve her as much as her white counterparts. This is ultimately another case of white American liberalism not realizing their own racial ignorance because they’re far more focused on being politically correct which serves to please EVERYONE. Even the conservatives they claim are the bad guys. (They are, but still.)
Twitter user @phendetta has also unsurprisingly been involved in racial ignorance in regards to Native Americans and was accordingly dragged. Do with that information what you will but honestly I think there’s a pattern here.
