So episode 9 happened. Yes. I passed out from sugar overdose!

There’s been something about Yuri!!! On Ice that I’ve noticed here and there but never really thought to make a proper post about, but two instances in the end of ep 9 made me decide ‘heck, why not point it out in case others haven’t noticed!’.

So, the ‘something’ I really enjoy seeing in YOI is how much focus the creators put into the characters’ placements. Naturally, it is an anime about figure skating and the body’s movement speaks a lot, but off the ice, simple positioning says so much. Obvious stuff like hugs and sitting close together sure, but the more subtle stuff is really lovely when noticed as well.

I feel like they pay attention to foot placement for example.

Here much earlier on in the eps, this shot was looked at as somewhat provocative. Viktor had one leg closely placed in between both of Yuuri’s. But if you look at it another way, it reeks of power imbalance. Viktor’s only got one foot in (like hello metaphorically one foot in– not certain yet–testing the waters), while Yuuri’s got both of his. Yuuri’s feet are also just placed there without purpose while Viktor’s is directing and somehow commanding. Can you see it? And it’s quite clearly Viktor (’s foot) trying to get closer to Yuuri, it doesn’t even matter context wise who moved, they hold this shot still for a bit and you can see it.

Then we have this shot from episode 9, and it’s a whole other ball game. Both Yuuri and Viktor have both their feet in, and neither is overwhelming the other in terms of positioning. The feet are placed closely together, but very evenly. Yuuri has one of Viktor’s legs gently placed between both of his, and Viktor also has one of Yuuri’s between both of his. No power imbalance here, no one person walking ahead of the other, no uncertainty. I also feel like pointing that when compared to the other shot (and many more in the show) specifically, their feet aren’t donned in skates. This is a purely off the ice interaction, as people instead of skaters. Seriously, I got all emotional looking at damn shoes when this scene popped up.

Another biggie that jumped at me quite simply were how the characters themselves are placed in terms of the space around them.

Please look at this shot back from ep 1. There is a very obvious blue barrier rope running along and so clearly dividing Yuuri and Viktor. They are on opposite sides, not even facing each other (heck Yuuri’s walking away–though at least Viktor is looking at him) and on top of that, there are a ton of other people around. On Viktor’s side, on Yuuri’s side, the creators have made the effort to include other people in their divided world. And a decent amount of them are looking, as though viewing some spectacle. Not private at all.

Now this shot. This shot. I repeat THIS SHOT. It’s a beaut.

Blue barrier ropes are there once more, but now Yuuri and Viktor are on the same side. Not just on the same side, but on the inside. They are between two sets of safety rails, completely blocking the outside world from their space. Where they’re standing in quite literally says ‘no entry’. No one is walking there, or is going to walk there, that space is all their own. Those that you can see in the airport are out of focus and have their backs to Yuuri and Viktor; it’s intimate and private. Guys, they’re literally in their own world. It’s just them and Makkachin. Makkachin who isn’t pawing at Viktor, and he’s not pawing at Yuuri, no, he’s in a place where he’s reaching for both of them at once. And of course compared to the parallel scene in ep 1, they’re facing each other, they’re hugging, their feet are all power-balanced and all that jazz too, but seriously, the spatial detail of their positioning..

This stuff actually pops up a lot I feel in YOI, gdi I love this show. Every week, it gets better and better gdi.

Well, it looks like we have, yet again, more development from Yuuri this episode. We’ve seen Yuuri’s transformation from a small, shy, anxious person to someone who exudes confidence on the ice and around Victor, and there is a lot of evidence in the new episode that demonstrates this. The line 「もう演技は始まっているよ、ヴィクトル。安心してる。ロシア中に僕の愛を見せ付けるから。」 (mou engi wa hajimatteiru yo, vikutoru. anshin shiteru. roshiajuu ni boku no ai wo misetsukeru kara) “The performance has already begun, Victor. Don’t worry. I will show off my love to all of Russia.”

The things to note here are 「見せ付ける」(misetsukeru) and「安心してる」(anshinshiteru). The word「見せ付ける」is translated officially as “to show”, however it is more forceful than that, it is defined as “to flaunt” or “to show off”. Yuuri isn’t just showing his love to Russia, he’s showing off because he is confident in his love, and is not afraid to express it. This is actually quite a symbolic action, as it is well known that Russia isn’t exactly the friendliest country toward lgbtq+ people, and so to openly flaunt his love which we can presume is not the straightest kind, to all of Russia specifically, is a big act. The word「安心してる」does mean “don’t worry”, however it isn’t the translation that is wrong, it’s the hidden connotations behind this one word that is important. In the previous episode, we saw Yuuri breaking down because of the pressure from being in first place after the Short Program. However this time, Yuuri is not stressed at all. Instead, we can see from this specific line, that it is Victor who is worried about Yuuri. Yuuri has enough confidence to believe in himself, and to calm Victor down. That’s character development if I ever saw it. The completion of Yuuri’s short program is also important to note. Even Yurio comments on how resolved the piece is now compared to its first showing at the Onsen on Ice competition. I’ve commented on this previously (here & at the end here) on the music itself, and how by showing the music uncut, MAPPA is portraying how, now, Yuuri’s short program, and his Eros story have been figured out, and he now understands what Eros means to him.

There’s a lot of higher and lower class imagery used this episode: Victor bends down to tie Yuuri’s skate laces even though Yuuri is perfectly capable of doing it himself Victor kisses Yuuri’s skates, he really really doesn’t need to It’s showing how Victor is acknowledging that Yuuri is improving and is perhaps even better than himself now. This is a highly likely possibility, as demonstrated with the quadruple flip at the very end of Yuuri’s FS Program, Announcer Morooka has already commented that even Victor has not put such a difficult jump at the end of a program.

Just some speculation on their developing relationship, but this line 「もしここで負けたら、ヴィクトルはコーチとしてそばにいてくれる中で、このプログラムを滑るのは最後になるかもしれない。ロシア中の、イヤ、世界中の人が僕の勝利なんて望んでないかもしれない。」 (moshi koko de maketara, vikutoru wa ko-chi toshite soba ni itekurerunaka de, kono puroguramu who suberu no wa saigo ni naru kamoshirenai. roshiajuu no, iya, sekaijuu no hito ga boku no shouri nante nozondenai kamoshirenai) “If I lose at this Rostelecom Cup, this may become the last time I can skate this program with Victor at my side as my coach. Maybe no one in Russia, or even the entire world, wants me to win.”

Strangely enough, Yuuri specifically states it might be the last time he will skate this program with Victor by his side as his coach 「コーチとして」(ko-chi to shite). It’s a very subtle detail but it connotates that somewhere inside Yuuri is the belief that even if Victor does resign as his coach, he will stay by his side. Their bonds grow deeper with every passing episode, and their tentative love grows stronger in turn.

Something I really need from YOI episode 9 is for Yuuri to end his FS with his signature hand-reaching-for-Viktor gesture pointed directly at the camera, knowing and trusting that Viktor will have his eyes on him, even by Makkachin’s side in Japan.

Something peculiar about the latest episode of Yuri!!! on Ice are the apparent parallels between the Crispino twins and Victor and Yuuri.

First off this was brought up by my good friendo @corvuxredux, go check them out!!

There are quite a few indicators that they’re somehow related to each other conceptually:

They’re both international level ice skating duos

One person within the pair used the other’s signature jump

While the Crispino twins can’t seem to physically be away from the other shown to a really high degree, the same episode they’re introduced in, we witness Yuuri telling Victor to leave and go back to Japan

The only times the pairs are shown (kind of) interacting with each other are:

When Sara greets Yuuri at the elevators - she immediately moves on to, and gives more attention to Sun-gil though, so it was probably just formalities.

When Sara listens in on Yuuri and Victor’s conversation about going back to Japan - This small cut away to Sara was fairly unnecessary unless the directors wanted to communicate something about her. Evidence for this is easily found though, and explains why there are peculiar parallels between the two pairs.

While Yuuri is showcasing his independence and his newfound confidence in himself and his coach, Victor, Sara and Michele are inseparable for now. Michele can’t seem to skate properly and with confidence without Sara because she is his purpose, who he’s dedicating his skating to while on the other hand, Sara is shown thinking of how to separate them for both of their sake’s, and her listening in to Yuuri’s show of independence and confidence draws further contrasts and parallels between them.

So on to the ultimate question, why? Why draw attention to this specific sibling duo, and compare them with Victor and Yuuri?

I think this links back to the story YoI is telling. It’s a story about perseverance, challenges, and breaking out of societal norms, in which the two main characters just love each other, wholly and purely.

What Victor and Yuuri have is mutual and balanced, one makes up for the other’s faults. It’s a strong and deep bond that can sustain itself even without the presence of the other, as demonstrated this episode. Both Victor and Yuuri respect each other, and take just as much as they give whether subconsciously or not (e.g. while Victor coaches Yuuri, Victor is also receiving inspiration from Yuuri simultaneously, Yuuri looks up to Victor because he is majestic and confident on ice, Victor respects Yuuri’s skating because of his unique step sequence as well as how his body moves with and creates music)

On the other hand, the Crispy twins have a strong sibling love, however it seems to be unbalanced. We see Michele clinging on to Sara for emotional support throughout the episode, from Sara zipping up his jacket, to the pre and post short skate hugs and hand kiss, to the kiss and cry. Yes they’re both happy, but it’s Sara always being happy FOR Michele. It feels kind of selfish on Michele’s part, albeit a subconsciously selfish move, he is improving because of Sara (triple-triple jump), but we don’t see Sara improving because of him in any way. What they both wish for is not the same thing (it’s not like Sara wants to protect herself from others as she’s obviously shown to be not exactly appreciative of Michele’s over-protectiveness in the elevator scene), and that is probably one of the reasons why Sara believes they will crash and burn if they continue to live clinging on to the other like this.

So back to the question, why?

It’s probably because the directors want to portray different types of relationships and different types of love and bonds people can share with one another. From sibling love to romantic love to paternal love to a love shared between friends, it’s all there. This ties in with the different Greek words that describe different types of love, although not explicitly stated, there are characters and couples in Yuri!!! On Ice that represent all the different types of love. I don’t quite know why the Crispino twins in particular were pointed out like this, perhaps it’s because with the dynamic of their sibling love, they just cannot be together, whilst because of the dynamic between Victor and Yuuri, they fit perfectly with each other, but that’s just a guess.

Here are some of the different Greek loves that have been portrayed so far

Agape - a giving love - Yurio towards his family, remember he is the main source of income for his family, or whoever is left of it

Eros - a sexual and intimate love - Yuuri towards Victor and vice versa (according to my best friend Wikipedia, Plato also thought that Eros encompassed one’s appreciation for the beauty of another’s soul, so that’s great)

Storge - affection particularly that of a parent to their child(ren) - Yurio’s grandfather toward Yurio, as well as Yuuko & Takeshi towards Axel, Loop, and Lutz, Katsuki parents towards Yuuri

Philia - friendship and affection between equals - seen between most of the skaters, especially during the China tournament, also seen between the Crispy twins, they both love each other (but not to the same level as the other)

Of course there are others like Ludus which describes a playful love, like friendly debates or flirting, the latter of which we saw a lot of at the beginning of Victor and Yuuri’s relationship. But these seem to be the main four.

I look forward to seeing where the YoI staff take this, and how they will further develop characters’ relationships with only four episodes to go. (Also sorry if this goes around in circles a bit, I tend to do that a lot)

There was this anon who asked whether we should be worried Sara is interested in Yuuri like… 5 days ago lmao I’m sorry, I was busy procrastinating

I can confidently say no, I really don’t think Yuuri or Sara are interested in each other. It’s more possible that Sara is interested in Sun-Gil since she goes to ask him whether he wants to go out and get food with her while ignoring Yuuri, after greetin him, who’s standing right next to him.

I was thinking of this post (above) before this question actually, I was told about this idea and had all the evidence gathered ever since like 4 days ago too, so I didn’t answer right away… that was probably a bad idea because now you’ve had to wait a week to get an answer hha… hope it’s a good one though!
