Pokecomptutorial #3. Team Building: Cores.
Cores are a bit of an informal term. Basically a core is 2-3 pokemon on your team that work really well together. Cores come in 2 different flavors offensive and defensive though you are free to use mixed or support cores too. Essential cores are pokemon that can cover each others weaknesses and counter pokemon so that your strategy can succeed.
1. Pick a core: When building a team it’s often a good idea to start with a core as part of your strategy. Your core should be the center of your team. Common offensive cores include jolteon and gyrados(mega), jirachi and machomp, and my favorite scizor, and rotom wash though I add either togekiss or gliscor. Common defensive cores include skarmory and blissey though another defensive steel type like ferrothorn may be better this generation, forretress and heatran, and ferrothorn, dragonite, and politoed.
2. Support your core. The rest of your team should support your core to make sure your strategy can work. There are a few ways you can do so. Include pokemon that take out your cores counters for offensive cores. You can set up with moves like trick room, reflect, and light screen. Baton pass allows you to pass on any stat changes and statuses to core member that may need them. And for offensive cores a defensive pokemon or 2 wouldn’t hurt so they can sponge up some attacks and help you to get ride of whatever counters your core. It’s also a good idea to bring pokemon that can stop both stall and setting up as your team needs.
3. Test and adjust your core. Your core should be able to work by themselves in a 3 on 3 battle. So take them to ratings battles or ask your friends for a 3v3. If your core is a 2 pokemon core bring a 3rd pokemon that can support them. Test until you feel confident with your core, I’d say it’s best if you’re winning the majority of your battles at least. Adjust your pokemon and sets too as needed until you’re happy.
4. Test and adjust you team. Once your core is good make sure your whole team can work well together and that your core succeeds in real battle. Again adjust as necessary.
5. That’s it. Now you’ve got a great core and a great team to support that core. It’s possible to use teams made of cores too. For example a team made of supporting pokemon, a 3 pokemon defensive/stall/support core, and an offensive core to finish things up should work really well. It’s also possible to use an offensive core and a defensive core together and etc. Use what you feel comfortable and happy with. More information on cores can be found on smogon: http://www.smogon.com/smog/issue10/cores or http://www.smogon.com/smog/issue17/core though there are more articles on smogon too as well as other pokemon sites.
Pokecomptutorial #5. Improving yourself as a battler.
Alright I’m back, I got caught up with my new job and stuff but from now on I’ll be writing tutorials irregularly. Also as a reminder I will review submitted teams and sets as well if you wish to utilize that resource. This tutorial is about improving yourself as a battler, rather than working on your team or strategy directly. It’s important in the world of pokemon competitive battling that you keep up with all of the changes in usage as well as strategy.
1. Get a pokemon showdown account, it’s simple and free. Pokemon showdown is a battle simulator for the smogon community and allows you to play pokemon online with using a 3ds. There are many different battle styles to be played there and you may do so at your leisure. http://play.pokemonshowdown.com/
2. Random battles: Once you have an account play some random battles. Random battles are well random battles wherein you and your opponent are given completely random pokemon of differing levels and tiers to use. Playing random battles allows you to quickly learn what different pokemon in several tier can do, and what sets to use with these pokemon. It’s also allows you to practice new strategies, learn the habits of other players, and best of all it teaches you to improvise within differing battle situation. It is absolutely important that you learn to improvise as a player.
3. Play: Once you’re used to random battles you should now upload your team(s) and try battling within whichever tiers you choose. You can even battle in the rules for Nintendo’s tournament the VGC. Practice and climb the ladders, as these are actual battles you’ll get the experience you need. You are also free to watch replays of your battles.
4. Experiment: Upload new teams and try out the different tiers. If you are an ou player for example it is also beneficiary that you play the uu tier. Many uu pokemon can be used perfectly in ou and since many ou battlers aren’t used to some of the sets uu pokemon can run they can give you the advantage. Also the tiers change over time and uu and uber pokemon can become ou. Showdown is also an excellent place to see how a new team can fare before you do all of the hard work of raising them within x or y.
5. Watch battles: Watching others battle is also another great way to learn how to play. There are several top players on showdown and learning from them can make you a very deadly player. Watching battles is the quickest way to learn about pokemon usage and sets common to the separate tiers.
6. Research. Lastly it’s important to constantly research. There are several resources to use. It’s critical that tournament and tier players know the scene and how best to build and use your teams. Basic resources: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Main_Page
http://www.smogon.com/
Figured I would make this, there are so many wonderful websites out there dedicated to Pokemon, and these are some of my favorites for competitive battling.
The best Pokedex in my opinion, sortable by type and base stats, etc.
Great battle simulator, also has a handy teambuilder

An In-Depth Guide to Pokemon Teambuilding
Hey guys, here is my in-depth competitive teambuilding guide! After my close friend posted a shortened version of this guide on his blog, I felt like it’d be good to show you all the full thing. First, before we begin the actual teambuilding process, we need to introduce you to a set of rules and guidelines that will set the foundation for the Pokemon you’ll end up choosing.

Togekiss Move Sets
The God Pokemon of hax. Togekiss is loved by many, but also hated by many. Mainly due to his most used moveset which includes the ParaFlinch tactic. But lets face it, this Pokemon is a monster! Even without ParaFlinch he can wreck teams. Let look at his base stats.
Look at that. A decent HP and Def stat. A poweful Special Attack! A very strong Special Defense. This thing was made to take hits. I am a huge Togekiss fan. He is pure power and he is freaking adorable! He is a very well built Pokemon with a move pool that fits his stats and abilities that work great with him. Lets get straight to the move sets
252 Sp. ATK, 252 Speed, 6 Sp. Def. In a Modest nature with Serene Grace ability, holding a Choice Scarf.
Air Slash
Thats it. Air Slash, Choice Scarf and your good to go. This set is simple and takes advantage of the high chance to flinch Togekiss has.
252 HP, 252 Sp. Def, 6 Def. In a Calm nature with Serene Grace ability, holding a Leftovers/Kings Rock/Razor Fang
Thunder Wave
Air Slash
Dazzling Gleam/Aura Sphere/Follow Me
Roost
This is pretty much the standard set. You paralyze your opponent with Thunder Wave and then start assaulting your opponent with Air Slashes. Super simple and thats why a lot of people hate Togekiss. Then you have Dazzling Gleam or Aura Sphere for coverage, and with Kings Rock they have the chance to flinch. Roost is to get that HP back so you can keep on trolling :P Follow Me is for when you are in doubles and can be very helpful.
252 HP, 252 Sp. ATK, 6 Sp. Def. In a Calm nature with Serene Grace ability, holding a Leftovers
Nasty Plot
Roost
Thunder Wave
Air Slash
Nasty Plot Togekiss, now we talking power. This set work like most, you paralyze your opponent but after that you start setting up Nasty Plots. Then you Roost up to recover any HP you lost and finish your opponent up with Air Slashes. Boom GG. ;)
252 ATK, 252 Speed, 6 SP. Def. In a Adamant nature with Hustle ability, holding a Wide Lens.
Extreme Speed
Steel Wing
Roost
Aerial Ace
I have never tried a set like this before. I honestly have only theorized about the effectiveness of a physical attacking Togekiss but it could be successful. You have Extreme Speed for priority. Steel Wing is coverage and also can lower your opponents defense. Roost give you back your HP. And Aerial Ace is a good stab move that never misses.
252 HP, 252 Def, 6 Sp. Def. In a Bold nature with Super Luck ability, holding an Assault Vest.
Dazzling Gleam
Flamethrower/Heatwave
Air Slash
Aura Sphere
Assault Vest is probably my favorite item. It boosts your Special Defense by 50% at the cost of not being able to use status moves. This Togekiss is a tank and has a big chance of crits. Dazzling Gleam and Air Slash are stab, plus Air Slash can flinch. Flamethrower/Heat Wave is coverage and if you burn your opponent then your defenses are even better. Aura Sphere is coverage that doesn’t miss.
Enjoy these sets? Be sure to follow me as I will be posting many more ;)
Chandelure Move Set
Chandelure is a pretty cool Pokemon. Its a Ghost/Fire type. Thats awesome! May not be the best typing but it just sounds cool. He was first introduced into the game last gen and was used a lot. This gen the amount of play he receives has dropped due to there being some better choice of Pokemon. Still, He provides quite a bit of immunity which I really love in a Pokemon.
Ghost types, I feel, are split into two groups. One group being fast and frail. The other being bulky and slow. Chandelure fits into the first group. He has a powerful base special attack of 145. Thats higher than the base attack and special attack of a Charizard X. Is speed is also decent. His defenses are a nice base 90, but because you won’t normally be investing any EVs into them you will be easily OHKO’d by super effective hits.
Weakness-Water, Ground, Rock, Ghost, Dark
Resist-Fire, Grass, Ice, Poison, Bug, Steel, Fairy
Immune-Fire (With Flash Fire ability), Normal, Fighting
Neutral-Electric, Flying, Psychic, Dragon
252 Sp. ATK, 252 Speed, 6 HP. In a Timid nature with Flash Fire ability, holding a Choice Scarf/Choice Specs/Life Orb.
Flamethrower/Fire Blast/Heat Wave
Shadow Ball
Energy Ball
Trick
Choice items are the best items to use on Chandelure. You can combo that off with Trick and mess up your opponent by locking them into an unfavorable move. Other than that Choice Scarf helps you to out speed threats that would normally run circles around you. Flamethrower is a strong stab attack for this Pokemon. Fire Blast is stronger stab move than Flamethrower but the reduced accuracy pushes me away from using it. Heat Wave can be ran instead if you’re wanting this for doubles. Shadow Ball is your second stab move for this set. Energy Ball is for coverage against Ground and Water types. And thanks to Choice Scarf, you will be able to out speed a Greninja and KO it before it can KO you. There are lots of other options that can be ran here as well. Hidden Power Fighting would allow you to hit Normal and Dark types with ease. Dark Pulse and Psychic can also be used here as well. Memento will cut your opponents offensive power at the cost of all Chandelure’s HP. A great move for when he has ran in course. It will force your opponent to have to switch out his Pokemon, which can give you an advantage.
Enjoy this move set? Be sure to follow me as I will be posting many more ;)
