A warning you've been told since before you learned how to walk.
Your mother would always tell you before you left the house. Telling you the story of how your great grandmother was eaten by a wolf, how she barely managed to escape from the beast's clutches.
She has a delivery business going on now.
More of a food drop off delivery. One that she's been doing since she was young. A job that your grandma had told her to do for a quick coin in the past.
You've heard wild stories about the job, like when she was younger: she went to deliver food to a couple in a honeymoon cabin, only to find out they were ogres.
"I ran off screaming! Dropping my basket and never turning back. Oh, what a fright it was!" She held a hand to her chest.
As much as you love your mother, you know that the delivery business is not for you.
When telling her such, she just scoffed and had you do another delivery job, giving you her uniform red hooded cloak. But the mistake was letting your grandma know that you didn't want to run the business.
"Oh, don't worry my little dove! I have just the thing!" Your grandma pats your hand reassuringly.
The next day, theirs a line of suitors in front of your house.
"There's Jack. He's in his mid twenties, has a vacation home in the kingdom of Far Far Away if I recall. Rich too. Oh! There's the other Jack! He's quite the klutz. And there's the other Jack! Now he's quite the jumper that one." Your grandma lists off, continuing on with the rest of the men.
You practically run away into the woods after the constant pressure from both women.
Now your days are spent avoiding your family, staying out of sight from any young man, and sneaking back home at night to sleep.
"Where are you!? We have deliveries that need to be done!" You would hear your mother.
"Sweetheart? You must meet Peter! He's very handsome and knows how to get to the stars!" Your grandma calls out during random times, a different man for you to meet each time.
One day you take a nap in a small clearing of flowers within the woods, using the hood as a blanket. When you wake up, the moon is out and you realize how dangerous it's become. There have been stories of wolves lurking nearby, but you've never seen anything to prove it true. However, its better safe than sorry, so you trust the rumor.
On your way home, you learn that the warning has another meaning.
You didn't notice when they started following you.
"Look what we have here." A voice said from behind.
A hand pulls you away from the path, causing you to scream. You begin hitting and clawing at the man that's taken you into the dark.
You are tossed onto the ground. Turning your head to look at your attackers, you recognize them as the three woodsmen. On occasion they do business with your mother, but now...they stare down at you with wild eyes.
"Poor little Red. You're out passed the hour. Too late to go home now." The blonde, John, says.
"Stay back!" You warn and take out a dagger from it's holder on the back of your belt. "I will not hesitate to use this!"
"You're as frail as a feather! You won't be able to hurt us!" The red head, Sam, laughs.
"We can easily disarm you, little Red." The brunette, Isaac, takes a step closer to you. "And we've got the strength to hold you down."
"You may have the brawn." You scoot away as the three get closer to you, noticing a conveniently placed rope circled around their feet. "But ladies always have the brains to out wit wolves such as yourselves."
Grabbing hold of the rope, you tug as hard as you can.
It swipes at the woodsmen's feet, causing them to fall and land on their backs, quite harshly on overgrown tree roots above ground.
You take this chance to run.
All you cared about was getting away, not caring what direction you were going.
So you don't notice the hole in the ground.
"Ah!" You scream as you fall, body hitting rock. "Ow.."
You hiss as you sit up, clutching the side of your head as you look at your new surroundings. Noticing that you've fallen into an underground cave.
"I heard her over this way!" One of the woodsmen say, sounding a bit muddled.
As quickly as you can, you get away from the opening from where you fell, resting against the cave walls.
There's a ringing noise in your ears.
Your eyes blur, then you notice that you're crying. Pulling your hand away from your head, you see blood running down your open palm.
Is this it? You wonder. I guess this is better than being in the clutches of those men...
As the seconds pass, you feel your body slump against the rock more and more. The growing ache and tiredness takes over. And then...you stare into the darkness of the cave you're in.
You don't exactly know when, but at some point, you noticed two glowing red dots in the darkness. Slowly approaching, until there was a tall brooding figure in front of you.
They held a sharp sickle in one hand, the moonlight bouncing off the metal, making it shine.
They tilted their head as they stared down at you.
"Long way from home.." The dark figure says. "What are you doing here? It's not safe to be out this late."
You stay quiet for a moment.
Just to breathe slowly before answering.
"Didn't- I didn't mean to.." You manage to get out. "Was chased...fell."
They stay still, quietly before slowly kneeling down to meet you at eye level. Their sickle now put down onto the floor of the cave.
"Quite the tumble." They say, their red eyes burning into you. "You're bleeding."
The figure hums, still looking at you.
And then you hear a wolf's howl in the distance, causing you to freeze up.
The sound of a chuckle leaves the figure in front of you. The sickle is picked up and they stand up, making towards the cave's opening.
"You'll be fine." They say. "Just rest for now."
They step under the moonlight now, and you can see something fluffy and white on them.
The figure takes one last glance at you.
"Just be sure to get up in the morning." They grin, revealing a large wolfish maw. "I can't promise you more than that."
They whistle a chilling tune before disappearing into the night.
And with that, they are gone.
You only stay awake for a little bit longer. Then the embrace of darkness takes over.
When you wake, you feel a sharp pain in your head.
"Oh, thank goodness you're alright!" Your mother cries out. "I thought you wouldn't wake up!" She tightens her hold on your hand. "Don't ever stay out late again!"
"What..happened?" You ask, blinking away the blurriness from your eyes.
"You were close to death! That's what!" Your grandma says. "Someone found you in the woods! Not too far from those torn up bodies too!"
"Let's just be thankful it wasn't her!" Your mother sighs. "They found wolf tracks near the bodies.. Oh, I'm so glad it wasn't you!" She pulls you into a hug. "I wouldn't know what to do with myself if that happened to you!"
"I'm sorry Mom.." You hide your face in her shirt. "It won't happen again... I promise."
The two step out after a while, having chores and work to get back to.
As you lay in bed, you wonder if you were dreaming or if that Wolf had saved you. While you think, you notice that it's early in the morning.
You remember what the Wolf said.
"Just be sure to get up in the morning. I can't promise you more than that."
