AESTHETICS & MOTIVATIONS.
it was like a shining, shimmering light. there were dragons, there were leprechauns and their pots of gold, there were owls carrying letters and people zooming around on broomsticks. it was so beautiful. then the monster under the bed took your sister away and trapped her half-gone in that castle. you didn’t know that was what this was going to cold. you’d trade every bubbling potion and every goddamn miracle to wake up from this dream and be stuck in a cubicle, as long as myrtle was there with you.
Mary-Jane always wanted to be a witch. Every time an adult would ask what she’d like to do when she grew up, her answer was always the same: a witch. Despite it being a slightly unusual answer among her friends, it was not exactly unexpected: her grandparents were occultists, and even though her mother wanted nothing to do with them, Mary-Jane was fascinated by their stories, artefacts and the small rituals they were allowed to share with their granddaughter.
Her obsession with magic reached its peak when her sister got her Hogwarts letter. Myrtle was not like Mary-Jane; sure, she enjoyed listening to their grandparents’ tales, but she didn’t care much about what they did. Yet it was her who got to be a witch. The younger sister begged the man who visited them to go too. He only managed to pacify her when he told her they only accepted 11 years old and older. He didn’t seem to believe Mary-Jane would join her sister, but she decided to take a leap of faith, and a year later, it paid off.
Myrtle spent the summer trying to alert her sister Hogwarts was not what she was expecting. The kids were not welcoming to people like them, and many of them were downright cruel. But the new student was having none of that and was sure that doing things differently from her sister would fix everything. After all, they had very different personalities, and Myrtle always had a problem making friends anyway. For 3 years, Mary-Jane was sure she was right; she had friends, and magic came easy to her; learning it was a dream come true.
And then her sister became Moaning Myrtle.
The wixen world was terrifying to Myrtle, which was why she always said she wanted to go back to the muggle world after graduation. Instead of doing that, she was stuck in a bathroom forever. It felt way too wrong, and Mary-Jane knew she’d had to do everything she could to help Myrtle’s eternity be less miserable than her life was. She neglected most of her friends to spend almost all of her free time with the ghosts. They promised to take care of Myrtle, and they adopted both of them somehow, even though one of them was still alive. They were not like the living, their habits were almost backwards, and their morals were less strict. Mary-Jane asked for ways to help her sister’s soul, they didn’t know how to force Myrtle to rest, but they taught her everything that could help and then some. The friendship with the dead made her an expert on them, and they helped her learn a lot of magic that was not on the curriculum. Some of them were dark magic, but her sanity seemed like a reasonable price for her sister’s peace.
After graduation, she got a job at a home security company. In the beginning, it was rather dull, but she was able to use her skills after a while. Many magical families dealt with ghosts and similar beings, and Mary-Jane knew how to deal with them. She started to build a name for herself and gain some stability. During one of the weekly visits to the Hogwarts ghosts, they started to whisper about Tom Riddle’s political movement. She remembered him from school and knew what he had done to her sister but had no proof of that. When the news of what happened to Arabella Greengrass broke, Mary-Jane didn’t know if she was more scared or hateful. Mary-Jane didn’t know if she could survive losing someone else.
myrtle warren (ghost). moaning myrtle, they started calling her. that was the first time you ever punched someone– broke your knuckle doing it, not that you regret it. you her every weekend, trying not to notice that she’s gone from your older sister to a decade younger.
nearly-headless nick (ghost). he helped you just as much as he helped myrtle. took both of you to her first death day party, promised you that he’d take care of her when you left school and when you eventually left this world. you visit him too, and he tells you all the goings-on of the school. maybe if people paid more attention to ghosts, they wouldn’t be so surprised that so many of them are spies.
aberforth dumbledore, maria black. they did a lot to help you– aberforth was the one who explained it to your parents, set them up in the hog’s head for the investigation and the funeral. when you graduated, he sent you towards maria for a job. you’re in a position to pay it back now, collecting information from everywhere you can get it.
walburga black, alastor moody. all three of you were friends, believe it or not. started fifth year, when you broke your knuckle punching that brat. alastor healed it, explained it away when the professors asked. walburga taught you to throw a better punch, one that wouldn’t break your hand. you still meet them at the gym every wednesday, even though walburga is starting to scare you.
