High fashion hits the playground

A few years ago I wrote a post about my obsession with Charlotte Olympia's shoes, having just visited her London flagship store. Well exciting news, the designer has recently launched a collection for children, featuring lots of cute and quirky flats that any little girl would look adorable strutting around in. Olympia has even recreated her iconic kitty flats in girl and baby sizes, so that mothers and daughters can have a little matching moment. Isn't that charming? While we're on the subject, have you noticed that many of the top designers are jumping on the babywear bandwagon lately? A few years ago I wrote about Lanvin's amazing children's line, other favorite designers such as Burberry, Stella Mccartney and Isabel Marant have also been designing children's pieces. Burberry is even making pint-sized versions of some of the key A/W 2013 Prorsum pieces: 

According to Vogue, Jean Paul Gaultier is launching a couture line for girls this Spring/Summer 2014. 

Earlier this month, J. Crew launched an adorable new baby collection, and they even carry baby blankets from Swan's Island, the showroom I just posted about last week!

Time to start keeping an eye out for lots of well dressed little humans.

On a recent trip to Maine, we made a special stop to visit Swans Island's studio in Northport. The showroom is housed in a 1780 post and beam farmhouse situated on a 17 acre farm. Early in the 1990s, John and Carolyn Grace moved from Boston to Swans Island looking for a change from their lives as city lawyers. Using organic wool from local sheep, and all-natural dyes they created themselves, they began hand-weaving blankets on looms. Eventually this became Swans Island Blankets, a company creating stunning wool blankets using traditional methods that not many seem to have time for anymore. The beauty is not only in the luxurious handmade products but also in their commitment to sustainability and their craft of utilizing things found in nature -- the yarn colors come from plants, minerals and even insects! Now known as Swans Island, the company has since moved to their current location on the mainland and their product line has grown to include throws, pillows, baby blankets, scarves and wraps. During my visit, I couldn't help but treat myself to a custom handwoven shawl -  feast your eyes on their gorgeous showroom below and you'll want to do the same. Check out the artisans in action creating my wrap on the loom!
