This blog is for people to send in their opinions about the many sides of the MLP:FiM art fandom. Whether it be ask blogs here on Tumblr, fanart, art styles, or the artists themselves: here is where people come to share and discuss. Putting this first, yes art patrons should respect the artist that they commission cause art doesn’t happen over night.  On the opposite side of the coin, artist should also respect the people that buy their art and finish it in a timely manner.  I have come across quite a few art buyers who payed a good amount of money for a piece and they have been waiting over a year for it.

So if your an artist who is currently doing commission or some one who is interested in earning money for their art, please follow some basic scheduling.  It’s nothing too crazy, just simple things like making a schedule, updating the buyer, make some sort of agreement if the pic take longer then a certain amount of time, make a visual queue to show where the customer is currently in line.  You could even set up a system where the buyer a portion of the price for each part finished.

So please, set up a schedule learn some business skills, you keep a lot more customer that way and you may get regulars.

I really want to upload my art onto DeviantART and some other places, but I’m afraid I will get judged by some other artists that I know, because I draw ponies.

I keep seeing artists doing grave anatomical errors (whether it is drawing two left hands or placing body parts incorrectly) or just doing something haphazardly and using the “It’s my style!” or “It’s my preference!” as an excuse to not learn how to draw things properly. Being lazy/inept isn’t a “style” any more than celibacy is a sex position.

I can’t remember the person who said it, but to paraphrase them: “You need to first learn anatomy, in order to alter it to your own style. As if you do not know how to do it correctly. You don’t know what you are changing about it in order to make it yours.” this applies both to the sfw and nsfw part of the fandom. But ESPECIALLY the nsfw side. (Female anatomy in particular)

Ever since I’ve joined Tumblr, I’ve had it in the back of my mind that a lot of artists would mistake friendly intentions me wanting to get something more than friendship out of them. I’m a hundred and ten percent scared that any artist whom I like, both their art and the stuff they post to their mod blog, would take any sort of me wanting to talk to them as me trying to mooch free art from them. Just because of this simple fact, I’m so terrified to actually talk to most artists that I think would be cool to get to know, because I don’t want them to see me as trying to get something free drawn for me when I just want to try and make a friend.

The whole idea of character vs creator is my favorite, so when I see a mod invading their character’s ask blog it always makes me laugh. I wish more blogs would do it, but many say it messes with the story, or end up getting hate from people who don’t like it. It’s their ask blog, let them have fun, besides It’s not like it’s not done in Hollywood, it’s even praised a lot in movies. (Stan Lee, Shyamalan, Simon Pegg etc)

I now understand how much pressure you can feel running an ask blog. You have to come up with an idea on how to answer the question, then draw it out. You also need the inspiration to draw said answer. There’s also wanting to start a story arc (or continue one) while simultaneously answering other questions. It can get to the point where you just want to stop updating completely and focus on other art. I’ve shut down two of my previous ask blogs due to the stress. I have one now that I’m trying my best to maintain, but it’s still stressing out now and again. So next time you feel like complaining about the mods of ask blogs delaying updates or going on hiatus, please try to put yourself in their shoes. I feel bad for getting upset about it before, and it won’t happen again.

I feel like it’s one of the only ways I’ll be able to improve.

I’m not talking about flat out insults: “This looks really bad, you’re not a good artist.”

I’m talking about constructive criticism, even if it’s harsh: “This looks bad, here’s why it looks bad, and here’s what you can do to make it better.”

Don’t get me wrong, I love receiving compliments, but I have several pictures where I specifically request people to give me some critiques, but most of the time I just get “This looks perfect! You did everything exactly right!” Which is very nice to say, but I can’t help but feel like people are lying to me at least a little bit. I know that there’s always room for improvement, but I need others to help me along the way.

Again, I’m not saying I hate receiving compliments, I’m just saying it would be nice to know what some people really think about my art and what they think I could do to improve.

I’ve been part of this community for a few years now and I was kind of worried that this fandom was slowly dying out. The reason that I was worried was because of so many outstanding artist, musicians, and writers. As well as all the amazing people that are in the fandom.

I was looking through and saw that this fandom is not dying out, but others are still running to the herd in mass numbers, but still it worries me because when people stop liking the show, and I know it will happen, it will be as if none of this ever happened. People will depart and stop altogether.

This show has taught a lot of people about friendship and happiness. It has brought people out of their shells and made them a happier person. This show has helped a lot of people. As well as its community who has reached out and helped others as well.

Though the thing that gets me is that when people finally grow bored of the show, of the fandom, of everything regarding MLP. The fandom will slowly die out. I hope it’s not for a very long time, but with all good things it most likely will come to an end, sadly enough.

Seriously, the sprinkling of entitlement involved in complaining about prices is ludicrous. Artists that are considered popular  live  off of commissions. When they raise the price it usually means they are low on money used to live. There is no reason that they should give you free art. They don’t owe you anything because you follow them. If you want to support them or get at from them, support their  patreon and buy their commissions. Dont be a dick and make them feel bad for asking for more money for their art.

I seriously hate it. I mean really, it’s like “I was friends with you when we had the same amount of watchers. 2cool4u”.

I lost a lot of friends due to this concept, and sometimes they even seem to ignore what I do for them since it’s not as good as someone that’s popular might be able to do.

I seriously want to be popular too - Not because it’s awesome, but to be friends with them again

I know we joke about bad OCs and all it’s like “oh, this is a super powerful unicorn that’s over a thousand years old and is possessed by a demon and is lunas boyfriend and they have a child who is always trying to kill them” but I have seen before how that OC can work. I mean exactly that OC.  There was a fic where that happened. It was well written too. The situation in which the character, the backstory and the development were presented made it work. They weren’t like that just because they were, there was a valid reason for them to be everything they were. There was a reason for him to be possessed by some sort of evil being. There was a reason for him to be Lunas closest friend. There was a reason for him to be like that because the writing was paced in such a way that you don’t realize that describing him would be a generic bad OC. So whenever someone says your OC is bad because their backstory is bad, it’s not the OC or your design. It’s most likely your writing is terrible.

I have a pretty popular askblog. Its around 4000+ followers, and recently i have lost all motivation for keeping it up. I post an update, and it only gets a few notes, i never get asks, and i am terrified that i am disappointing everyone.

Now, it seems like no one has even noticed that I stopped posting, which makes me feel like no one even cared in the first place. I have retreated to my severly less popular personal blog, but it just seems like they care more. I feel like i am attacking them for saying this and im not! I appreciate each follower i got and i wish i wasnt disappointing them.

The stress of life combined with feeling like no one even cares just makes me wanna quit. I am scared to post this publicly cause i am afraid of backlash. Nevertheless, i wish i had the courage to apologize, and make a formal farewell.

So I guess this is me apologizing. Im sorry I cant keep this up. I am sorry I couldn’t keep up my promises, and im sorry for leaving unexpectedly.

If you’re buying a commission, you are paying someone who spent years to develop a skill you lack. You are paying for services that you lack. Don’t complain about prices, if you don’t like them, find someone else to buy from. I guarantee that if you want a good quality commission, it’s going to be a bit pricey. Not to mention many artists live off of those commissions. But yeah, you are paying for a skill that you lack. Deal with it.
