For the Future
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to apply for the role in Design and Research.
I have experience in researching future technologies and trying to create new concepts with them while studying at Manchester Metropolitan University, on the of course Creative Multimedia. Throughout the course we had looked at future technologies, designed websites, learnt PHP, JAVA, Jquery and HTML5. We spent time working with technology such as Arduino’s, Openframe Works, 3D printing and CAD/CAM.
We have also worked with companies such as Code Computer Love and the BBC. Furthermore we have created exhibitions for art galleries such as The Bury ART Museum.
The skills I have gained through experience, while at University and outside, would be very useful for this role and I will continue to learn and develop my skills to come up with new and exciting digital media for the future.
Regards,
Michael Britnell
The CornerHouse - mcr - Noise + Signal
"Would you like to see your body rhythms as part of an artwork?
Come down to the annexe, where artist Daksha Patel will respond to live data from biosensors including skin galvanometers, pulse monitors and electroencephalography (EEG).
Participants will be invited to wear sensors while they wander around Cornerhouse, and the data will be sent via wifi to Daksha as she works in the annexe. The signals will be projected onto a large easel which Daksha will draw upon. The drawings will ‘map’ people’s responses to the spaces around them, visualising the data as a combination of noise and signals."
On Saturday 23rd of November I was asked to run the technology behind the Noise + Signal Art event at the cornerhouse in Manchester. This involved getting up very early to set up the equipment behind the event. I had to use laptops, arduinos, galvanometers, pulse monitor and an electrocephalography headset ( this read the brain waves of the user).
Once the event was underway i had to make sure all the equipment was running correctly and also had to change the templates that openframeworks was running. The Event ran for about 6 hours so it wasnt too long but it was a little dull mainly reading numbers off a screen...
I was happy that I was asked to help out and would certainly do it again.

on the 12th of Feb i went to the digital skills event in manchester. I spoke to the company above and they mainly focus on PHP and coding for business models... it didn't sound that fun. i also spoke to other companies too, CodeComputerLove were there!
I think the event will be more useful next year and i will definitely go.
Winter Light at Waddesdon: Bruce Munro
Over the Christmas holidays I went to Waddesdon Manor. It is a National Trust site near where I live, Bucks. I went there because Bruce Munro has a four year residency there. Bruce creates light installations, mainly in gardens, and I felt that seeing his work fits nicely with CMM at MMU.
His winter lights at the manor consisted of six separate installations;
Brass Monkeys
Parliament of Owls
Mynah Words
Tepees
Water-Towers
Field of Light
My favorite installation was Mynah Words because of all the colours and how it was shown in a pavillion. I like all his work because he uses nature to influence him and then adds technology.
It turns out i had heard of him before because i had look at his work for the future proof project and remember the field of lights.
CMM trip to London
The CMM visit to London was both the first and second years at MMU. On the first day we had to be up early to get the train to London from Manchester Piccadilly. We arrived at Euston station and from there we all went straight to the Hostel.
After having a little walk-a-bout tour of the area (that could have been alot shorter if we'd walked the other way) we arrived near Leicester Square on the West End and went to the Tender Pixel Gallery. Here we we’re shown videos some of their past work. They were trying to make 3D animations without the screen and it all looked very clever. In the gallery the piece they showed us was a chair and masking tape and i felt that this piece wasn't as good as their previous ones.
After this we had some free time so went to the Christmas markets on the Southbank and then took the tube to Camden where we went to comedy night at a local pub. Then went back to the Hostel. I had forgotten about the prices of drinks in London....
The next day we went to the V&A, Natural History museum and the The Science Museum. I like the natural history museum because of all of the animals. The Science Museum had an exhibit on 3D printing but I felt I knew most of what they were saying.
After the Museums we went back to Euston and them went home.
Week 2
BBC come here...
16/01/14
Today the BBC came to MMU and handed use the Brief. They talked it through with us and asked what we would like to get out of this unit (so they can tweak it for us?).
For the next time we came back we were asked to look at and research all different signing in processes, starting at IPTVs.
Here is a blank copy of the design sprint that we did at the BBC.
BBC!
Going to the BBC in Salford to do a project with them. It should be interesting to see what we'll be doing and how professionals work .
"Second-we will be meeting on Tuesday 14th January at 10am outside the MMU school to go to the BBC on the bus for your first project day with them. They have some great workshops and fun stuff planned for you. You will also get to see what they do and hear all about their projects. The 1st years will be going too for that day and taking part in the workshops."
BBC Site Visit
On the 14/01/14 we went to the new BBC heardquatres in Salford. At 2pm we were taken to a meeting room and we had some presentations given to us. Each presentation was 5 minutes and they covered all aspects of work at the BBC including; UX design, BBC Research and Development and other areas.
In between the presentation we had some tasks. The first one was to split into pairs and one of us had to each a yoghurt and the other had to record what they were seeing. I guess this was to show us how to "empathize" with the "eater" and look at the design and things to do with the yoghurt.
After some more presentations and talks we were split into pairs and had to do a mini design sprint. This is where we had to research our user and design a wallet/purse that suites their user needs.
It was hard trying to work quickly, as we only had about 3 minutes for each section. But the design sprint was very good because it showed us the techniques the the BBC use when they are deigning their user experiences.
I felt that it was a good day to the BBC as it showed us a professional and corporate environment, however I dont really thing that it the kind of environment i wantwhen i graduate.
