it really does make me so sad that mogami arc is generally reduced to "wow cool edgy arc can you believe the cat died" bc i feel like it kind of buries the actual arc's intentions

like mogami's motivation, to me, is extremely clear. he is someone who has spent his entire life selling himself out to the worst sides of humanity, destroying his mental and physical health, in order to save someone who died anyway, only to find out that all the things he did to save her only ended up making things worse. but if he admits it to himself, admits that all of this was his fault, that he never had to do any of that, that's DECADES of his life wasted on what? so he has to project it outwards, has to blame other people, has to convince himself its everyone else because after all that it can't be him, right?

and then he finds someone who reminds him of himself, finds someone as naive and selfless as he used to be as he has to do something to put that right because maybe, just maybe, then all of this will have been worth it. it will have led to something. he'll have someone who understands him. so he puts him in a world without his powers and tries to convince this kid that that's the difference. that his powers are all that's protecting him from being scorned by everyone, if he didn't have them the world would treat him like trash.

but we know that's not true. even if mob met the people in his life (reigen, the telepathy club, the body improvement club, etc) because of his powers doesn't somehow mean that all those good people in his life wouldn't simply cease to exist if he didn't have them. we are shaped by the people we have in our lives, you are not born an immutably good or bad person. if mob lost his support system and got put in the sphere of someone who, to my understanding, is a fairly standard type of bully you would find in a japanese middle school, he would have turned out different. and in the same vein, if mogami had gotten the sort of support structure mob had, he probably would have turned out different too. this is why he concludes everyone's worth saving. minori, like other antagonists in the show, being shown kindness by someone she's only ever been cruel to and making the decision to change because of it, is proof of that. and mogami is able to see that. that's why mob's trust in minegishi in world domination arc is what lets him finally let go of his grudge and pass on. minori wasn't a fluke, showing kindness and understanding towards people who have done bad things has the capacity to change them.

that's kinda the point of the show
