WARNING: Long Facts-Ridden Diatribe Ahead
In conversation with my father today, I brought up some of the batshit crazy things Mike Huckabee has said recently, one of which was his comparison of President Obama to Adolf Hitler…in response to this statement, my father said, “Well, that one I agree with”
I told him, “If you honestly believe Obama is in any way comparable to Hitler, you’re delusional”
He then responded, “What’s the first thing Hitler did? He took away the Germans’ guns”
Now, I already knew well enough to refute that, but for the sake of knowing about things that are important, I decided to look it up:
First of all, after a brief bit of Internet research, I learned that, in actuality, it was the Weimar Republic that enacted strict gun laws during the inflationary depression of the 1920s, although they relaxed those laws in ‘28, so that Germans could own guns so long as they had the correct permits
Hitler’s regime actually did nothing to change those laws until 1938, at which time they actually relaxed them even further, by removing restrictions on long guns, lowering the age of gun ownership from 20 to 18, removing restrictions for members of the Nazi party and others, and so on
Now, it stands to be said that they DID take away guns from all Jews in Germany, but in all honesty, pointing to that as an argument against gun control is foolish for several reasons:
1) the idea that taking away guns from the Jews was the only crime the Nazis committed against them is grossly shortsighted (remember, 1938 was also the year of Kristallnacht)
2) even if the Jews HAD kept their guns, it would likely have meant nothing in the long run, since a) even in the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, only about 20 Germans were killed as opposed to 13,000 Jews, with about 50,000 more sent to concentration camps afterward, b) the Red Army lost roughly 7-10 million men fighting the Germans even with tanks, planes and heavy artillery on their side, and c) if any Jews HAD resisted the Nazis with firearms before or after the 1938 gun laws took effect, it would have only given the Nazis an excuse to persecute them
On top of all of this evidence, there is also the simple fact that Obama has neither attempted to or actually carried out any plans to take away any Americans’ guns, despite all the cries to the contrary from the NRA, Fox News and others of their conservative ilk over the past 6.5 years…but even when Obama laments that he feels he hasn’t done enough on the issue of gun violence, gun lovers cry wolf and play the victim as always (while personally, if I were president and ANYTHING was killing 32,000 of my citizens per year that I thought I could do something about, especially if it was caused by preventable violence, I think I’d be upset, too)
Meanwhile, the evidence that things have actually improved at least slightly under Obama continues to be ignored by conservatives; the families of the tens of thousands of people whose deaths were made possible by the American obsession with guns get no restitution for their suffering; and the NRA and its gun manufacturer friends continue to make a killing (macabre pun fully intended)
So please, the next time some conservative bleats that Obama is a neo-Hitler who plans to seize all the guns and declare himself king of a Marxist black Muslim dictatorship, remember that YOU have the power to prove them wrong at your own fingertips (assuming they’re not deranged enough to ignore reality)

As if the entire military would ever follow orders to murder civilians. Just admit that you want people who disagree with you to be put to death. It’ll make everything so much simpler.

I don’t see how owning some old bolt-action rifles for historic and sporting purposes is “clutching”, but okay. I don’t believe that Obama is a Marxist black Muslim dictator, nor do I believe that a government gun ban is imminent. I do believe that certain members of the government desire one though, and living in California and getting to see Leland Yee’s “ghost gun” nonsense and the reveal that he was illegally trafficking weapons has destroyed any trust I have in members of the government regarding firearms. That and the ATF’s “Fast and Furious” scandal of yesteryear should be enough for anybody with an ounce of critical thinking skill to question the motives of the government regarding firearms. Also, I’m a total coward so I’m definitely not hoping for another civil war.
Fun fact: Obama just fired some 300 odd generals because when asked they said they would not fire on American civilians.

It was a news talk show that I’m sure you don’t want to listen to two hours of. The closest article I can find simply admits he’s purging the military of anyone who won’t follow his orders directly. Which isn’t what soldiers do, they sign contracts to uphold the constitution not listen to the beckon call of The President. It’s pretty clear he’s up to some shady shit. Also, where’s the source for your shit? Claiming that he’s not doing bad things just because you say so. You have no experience to allow you to be speaking with such authority.

That wasn’t a quote, it was an approximation of the general message they and others like them have been giving out for years now
You put it in quotes and told me that the NRA said it. But please find me an article where the NRA says anything that’s not voiced as a concern but a fact about their guns being taken away. Please.
First off, just look up “has the NRA said Obama is going to take guns” on Google to see a little evidence there
Secondly, as to your assertion that Obama is purging military officers, a brief search turned up an article which pointed out that 2 such lists have been in circulation: one of 9 generals fired or asked to retire early for incidents of misconduct or mistakes made under their command; the second, of about 200, does not list details regarding their firings, and could therfore be simply an example of trying to overwhelm people with tidbits that don’t actually add up to what those trying to make a point based off of it are saying
The source I linked you too was from someone who has had experience with the military. You have yet to link me to a source. I’m not going to google it because I know the NRA has not said “he’s going to take our guns” they say “were afraid he’s going to take our guns.” And honestly I’d be afraid too if someone was potentially going to steal my property, that’s actually why I lock my doors at night and hide my valuables. Are people who do the same crazy? Are they right wing nuts because they think they should be able to keep things that they purchased legally?

Honestly, I was interested in the Politifact decision, and I am suprised by how biased it is. It claims that such a statement could be understood through what was said,
"During the meeting, President Obama dropped in and, according to Sarah Brady, brought up the issue of gun control, "to fill us in that it was very much on his agenda," she said.
"I just want you to know that we are working on it," Brady recalled the president telling them. "We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar."
So something to that degree was said. Yet it ranks the NRA as pants on fire because they later decide "We found no evidence of an Obama admission anything like the NRA suggests." But they had previously shown something of that sort was said.
What the NRA said "We are working on (gun control), but under the radar." What Obama said "I just want you to know that we are working on it, We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar.
Yet it's marked as pants on fire. Hmm. I probably wouldnt site that as a source, but I also read what I post.
- the article aso mentions that Obama did not try anything on gun control his first term, that is true. But let's not forget the massive push for it that came under his second term. Maybe this article should be updated as it's full of old and bad facts. Again, not something I would site as credible.
