While this is clearly the initial “S” from the page of an illuminated manuscript, one wonders if the illustration corresponded in any way with the text on that page. Is it perhaps a medical treatise on genital disease or a practicum on castration? Perhaps a moral manual on the evils of “self-pollution,” or a penitential guide on dealing with such sins? Alas, without a source, one may never know.
