Eh at the end of the day it’s just a word. I wouldn’t say the clown mindset is quite “normal”, and I do feel a regression like experience with it.

If you’re cis then you’re cisgender, not this stupid thing
Let’s say you are female, and you feel strongly connected to the female identity but you also feel a slight bigenderness. That would be this label. You can keep the cis identity because it’s the “core”. Gender and sex is way more complicated than you think, there is a lot of biological diversity. Binary sex is disproven just by intersex and the sheer amount of sexes, disorder or not they still can’t fall into the “male” or “female” sex, but they can identify as either because mental gender isn’t sex. I think of it this way: there’s a spectrum between male and female, but it doesn’t have point a-b, instead it has a complex gender combination like male, bigender, slight male mainly female, etc. and it gets more complicated too. If you feel mainly connected with your birth gender, you can identify as cis even if you aren’t quite cis.
There are a lot of intersex variations too. Since gender is based on sex (or for some, spirituality and culture) but doesn’t always align and can’t be biologically seen (no, brains are a unisex organ and there were too little differences between man and woman brains to actually conclude that they were different) so who’s to say that these aren’t people who are experiencing a gender based of an intersex identity. Even if it is a disorder, are people not allowed to experience disorders? If there is something that can be biologically diverse like intersex, why can’t it be mentally diverse too?
If you feel only slightly bigender then you’re cis. That’s it.

A preference? I’m not sure what you mean, this is about internal identity not external. If you feel connected to this identity, great! You can use it. Gender is a lot more complicated than exact binary. People may feel confused and want a way to express their feelings about gender that exact binary cis or trans just doesn’t do. People use this kind of mogai if they are something that they can’t quite pin on common binary sex, gender, or attraction. But they can still fall under umbrella terms like “cis” or “gay”.

It’s real! I coined it because I felt myself regressing to a not quite childlike but clownish state. It was quite odd but it’s very relaxing for me. When I’m a clown I can feel connected to the parts of my childhood that weren’t traumatic and it helps me a lot. I’m happy to incorporate it as part of my identity because it’s such a big part in my life :0)
