I feel like the choice to tie surnames to faction & not race boils down to wanting to somehow avoid race dynamics. in a game famously having race dynamics. It feels to me like white people going oh! we don't see colour :) you're welcome to sit with us! (and then get upset when you're culturally different than them in ways they deem as rude or impolite.)

It doesn't work. my cultural upbringing goes with me, even if i generally pretend otherwise. i could rename myself Henry Smith tomorrow but I'm not white and you could not pretend that i was. it WOULD be interesting if thats ever a talking point for rook to be all; yes, I don't like this name but that's what they call me now - but nothing like that shows up and so many other things in davg show me very little understanding of racial dynamics and culture.

Bellara looks east asian, but she's nothing like me. Even though i literally have auadhd, i still find her completely unrelatable, because other than looking like someone from my race, she shares nothing else to me.

I've seen people get upset at comparisons about merrill and bellara and think that somehow wanting merrill to replace bellara is some sort of racism; i will say as an east asian bellara means nothing to me. She's not east asian, she's someone that looks east asian. Who has a less compelling story than merrill of the sabrae clan.

also just saying but i think illario as a mage has some very fun applications. in this beautiful world lucanis is partially trained to be his own personal templar. caterina sees magical power and fears it, but loves it enough to want to control it. lucanis is fed lyrium to help “manage” illario despite illario’s self control being so drilled into him that he’d resist all temptation. magekiller gets a whole new meaning and despite lucanis and illario’s best attempts at being brothers, some kind of real camaraderie that rises above the resentment once in a while, how do you ever get over the fact that he is trained to kill people like you. lucanis is even more miserable. mage-templar tensions in a new and weird exciting way. and then the lyrium that is in lucanis’ body is the perfect place for a demon to settle in and thrive so caterina inadvertently creates a mage so backwardsly repressed that he can’t even get possessed otherwise he Loses some imaginary fight with his grandma, vs. a templar that’s been taking so much lyrium that a demon burrows its way into him. anyone else understand me orrr

the other thing about the crows being the way they are in veilguard is that i genuinely think it makes zevran's arc in origins look worse. a story about a person who needs to be shown mercy and friendship before he can even start to fathom living a life outside of them, fighting back against the organisation that abused him and he's literally just a rank and file crow so there must be hundreds of crows with the same story as him. which would lead me to believe there would be moral/idealogical conflicts if you try to play a 'good' rook interacting with the heir to a crow house, especially first talon. maybe this is a bit of metagaming in that the player knows more about how terrible the crows are than a pc would. but also can we be for real the thedas equivalent of the mob not being taken seriously? rook walks to talon number seven and is like "heyyyy so you're the guy?" and doesn't even blanche at the realisation that this is a talon? i should have been given the option to cuss out viago just because he IS a talon like legitimately what can eg. a veil jumper know about the crows beyond that they are dangerous and shouldn't be trusted unless you have the gold to ensure it. but instead you kind of walk up to marlon brando and he's like "luigi great you brought me these two random guys. now don't tell anyone you two but youse must go save my grandson. i trust youse above anyone else to do this." like why the fuck is marlon brando telling me this shit. and presumably if a foreign national private investigator (neve) can set up a meeting with the mob boss then weirdly enough it makes caterina look so stupidly accessible like mind you not even loghain met a talon in person. there wasn't even a stupid test of faith before you walk into the top floor of their casino. in fact helping an orphan entrench himself further into the crows and help them recruit EVEN MORE orphans into the mob is treated as quote unquote good because the crows rule antiva. and this is supposed to be the leadership of the antivan crows who made zevran's life so utterly miserable he thought he had to kill himself to get out of it. from what you see in veilguard there's nothing to even run away from they are so comically frustratingly nothingburgers

sometimes it's like maybe i'm too harsh about little things in veilguard. maybe its not that srs. and then i remember you get the outfit on the left for returning the griffons to the grey wardens versus the one on the right for letting them go back into the wild. when it feels quite obvious davrin would have gotten the embellished lovely layered armor with the fuck off massive gold griffon wings and everything as a gift from the wardens for giving the griffons back to them ? rather than the extremely boring blue jacket and sash which kind of screams 'those griffons were ours by right i hope the next archdemon manages to kill you' because the only bits of armor don't even cover enough of his torso to block any kind of hit and he's supposed to be the fucking tank. or is that just me. like who the fuck gave him that second armor. assan? and also even a little bit of dalish influence for the dalish grey warden in the "free griffon" choice would have been nice to see actually but i'm stuck with this. davrin i can save you

sorry this might be the thing that actually breaks me. to handwave slavery as ‘bad’ and so it doesn’t need to be depicted is so dismissive and reductive of not only what enslaved people went through, but also what a country whose identity is interwoven with an institution like slavery would actually look like.

there would be enslaved people at the docks (true even of northern US states before abolition; true of tevinter where people were transported by ship to be sold). there would be enslaved people accompanying slaveholders (see: fenris). it would be visible at all levels because it was something tevinter prided themselves on. you cannot enter kirkwall’s harbor without passing the two enormous statues of enslaved people in chains, and even more at the gallows.

you don’t ignore showing it in docktown because it’s bad and we all get the idea, right? you show it because it’s part of tevinter’s identity, we have seen its effects in origins with the denerim alienage, we saw it through fenris’s eyes and experiences, we had dorian’s perspective as someone born and raised in that culture. and then we get to tevinter and—?

personally, how tall do you think lucanis is? for me, he’s 5’4 on a good day and 5’2 1/2 on a bad one

in my heart he is like 5’4 (162cm). i draw him a bit taller than i should and he’s 5’7 (170cm) in comparison to my rook but i do try to have him be obviously shorter whenever he’s in view of the others. nevecanis is super real when she’s got a foot over him ❤️

tho in game i didn’t really see him be noticably shorter than the other companions despite the dev saying he was modelled that way lol. i wish it was more obvious
