In unit 13 I have explored the concept of the ‘senses ‘through photography, I originally planned to look at the main 5 senses but as my project has developed I have focused on touch, taste, sight and hearing. I have portrayed this in film and through photography.
Throughout unit 13 I have been inspired by primary and secondary research such as Bruce Naumen’s work, Pinterest, tutorials, YouTube and books which has been vital to my projects development. Through looking at different research sources it has helped me understand more about the senses and about how people interpret different things individually using their senses. I have made key creative decisions throughout this project by keeping them in my journal and sketch book which has helped me discuss key ideas with peers and teachers. One of my key decisions has been to focus on moving image and video in my project instead of just still photographs. I have also wanted to explore the idea of the project being and ‘experience’ to the viewers, letting them use their senses to work out different things such as trying to guess what people say in a video and then the same but using stills from the video to see if they react differently and to make them use their sense. This has been interesting as not only have I been part of this project to explore my senses on other people through creating my outcomes but witnessing other people having to utilise their senses to come up with answers.
Research has been vital to this concept of creating and ‘experience’ and also to gather more detailed information about the senses medically .This has been a helpful insight and interesting due to the fact this project was inspired by me being completely deaf in one ear and having to utilise my senses even more. Therefore learning about how I use my senses compared to other people especially with sight and sound. Getting people to say different words and grouping them together has been engaging and has made me personally more self-aware of my senses and how other people use their senses to express things. Especially getting the same person who said the words to then try to figure out what he/she said when they were presented as stills, and it was a fascinating insight to see that everyone got each word wrong apart from one person who got two words right. This was an unusual insight to see how they are not even aware of how they say words or express different words by using their senses to work it out.
Key factors have helped this project to work and to be developed, the main influence has been I have been interested and enthusiastic about this project due to the fact it was based on personal experiences. I also feel that because it was engaging and based on people experiences with senses the people helping with this project had a general interest in what and how I would create a final piece. I also believe that group feedback and tutorials have been key to expand on my shoots and push this project with new and interesting ideas and opinions.
Planning in this project has also been very important; I have documented ideas and quick decisions in my journal that I have then transferred those ideas into my book and blog. This proactive outlook has let me be creative, better planned and distinctive. Using these experiences I can transfer them to my next step of university and I can know what I enjoy and how I can push myself even more to create outcomes that are new to me such as using Adobe Premiere for part of my final piece this project. I believe all these skills have played a part in helping me create an interesting and distinctive project that I have gained more independents and more skills from to help me come out with a unique project.
