Me today: ⬆️ Me last week: "I don't think I'll ever use all six USB ports, but it's only $2 more..."
Yali and I rent a tiny apartment that we use when her AirBnB is full. It's about 2km away from the hustle, and the streets are very narrow and twisty. I love this area, has a very "old city" feel. Sometimes I forget that there's 3000 years of memories under these streets. Also, I think we found the source of the mosquito problem in this part of the city 😅. (at Yuancun Station)
A million seconds is cool, but do you know what's really cool?... A BILLION SECONDS. Join me here as I enter the 3 Comma Club. Big day folks! Hopefully the next billion seconds are as good as the last. #3CommaClub #CounterfeitCheesecake (at Guangzhou, China)
Despite a background in design, and some experience drawing things, I am slightly ashamed to admit I have never really laid paint to canvas. Yali really wanted to decorate an AirBnB apartment she manages, so she ordered a bunch of primered canvases, and a varied selection of acrylic paints. I'm pretty happy with our first tries! I call the first one "Sunset Through Streaky Glasses" (art direction by @yali.sunh), and the second one "Failure of Balance". Write us a cheque with a bunch of zeros on it and we'll make you one too. We were dressed a little fancier than usual (for me, that's code for "my shirt had sleeves") so we snuck up to the rooftop bar of a fancy hotel for a couple of these shots. (at Zhujiang New Town)
Looks even better at night. If Gibson had held back on penning Neuromancer for a few years they might be spending New-Yuan in the #cyberpunk future instead of New-Yen. (at Guangzhou Library)
Got me a library card like a gosh darn Guangzhou native. ...Seems I've stumbled upon the "Maker's" section of the library. What's this? Fully stocked lab with fabrication stations, 3D printers, and a small format laser cutter? It's all free to use as long as I schedule an appointment? Life is good. (at Guangzhou Library)
The Guangzhou Public Library is big, beautiful, and tucked in behind the Guangdong Museum, which is equally big and beautiful. I honestly haven't seen a library this nice since Vancouver. Why have I been exclusively leaching wifi at corner stores and shady restaurants before now? This is a game changer. (at Guangzhou Library)
I finally got around to watching this DVD of the 2017 #Finke that was sent to me several months ago. It required that I buy a USB DVD Drive just to watch it 😅, but that only cost me about the equivalent to $8 on TaoBao (imagine if AliExpress had Amazon Prime shipping speeds? Yeah, the Chinese have that). This DVD is surprisingly high quality, and injects a lot of suspense and tension into the stories of the front-runners. I recommend giving it a go if you have the means (...and if you don't have the means let me know via PM and I might be able to link ya to an mp4). Out of 650 competitors, I wasn't really expecting a back-marker like me to get any screen time, but there was a little worm in the back of my mind that thought that there might be a couple shots of me just as the sun was setting on my last stretch to Finke: I was very near the back of the pack after my carb-flooding mishap, but this one helicoper kept strafeing me and getting close for about 3 minutes or so. The pressure of being watched had me riding my hardest where I could, and even at my sub-par speeds I knew it would've made for some compelling "magic hour" footage. You'll be glad to know I did actually make it into the movie, right at about the 29 minute mark!... It just wasn't the footage I thought they had collected 🤣 (at Guangzhou, China)
We walk by this car nearly every day. Yali hates it. I... Well, I folded on tuner cars at approximately the 5 minute mark in 2 Fast 2 Furious, but hey, I appreciate that's there's still some folks who still keep that torch lit. I see this car in the same way I see a fresh pair of Air Jordans: I deeply admire what they did with the aesthetic, but I could never wear them; they don't fit the vagrant-uncle vibe I'm going for. . . . . . #itlookslikeitcouldfly
