I Married My Mother
Where is my woman and where has she gone? Oh, Titania, how you vex me…
Many are allowed to see their mothers often; a snowflake returning to a mountain stream, an overripe blossom falling into roots, a matriarch of beasts tending to cubs. My mother and I were not granted such luxuries.
I crave not her womb or embrace or even dialogue of sorts, for we are content being of a different nature. I only wonder of her warmth that those of a lighter coil rave. I dream of feeling her presence and her feeling mine.
I am yet her spawn but a stranger. Those who worship us are too devoted to their rituals to allow otherwise. Then what other way to bypass this than to entertain the gravest mortal law?
We were permitted one day, and then others somewhere down the fractal of time. There was no wedding- but the consummation! When I saw my sweet mother, my white-hot and plasma faced queen, at a distance so beautiful I feared if I touched her I would die. I felt her and knew her light was mine. I also deserved to bask, and she would watch me, and I would always be hers.
The disparity of worlds, the beauty of opposition, lion tamer and lion lamed; that is my wife and mother.
And so the mortals called us the Eclipse.
He first noticed his hands, well labored but washed. Then came his softness with the hounds, his finesse with a scythe, his way with the younger slaves.
Is he one of Petyr’s men?
No…Of that parasitic ilk. The Eastern ones. Find reasons to die without god or law. Son of the hills with all the master’s poppy. Stupid and loved, he was! Sold himself in place of the women.
The crone waned on.
He went swiftly to the slave’s records to place the prince as a boy named Danil. Not even of courtship age! Yet his shoulders so broad, the bearing down paternal.
What of Danil’s mature prowess? A hard body surely a promised consort has touched. And so he watched him work with muddied favor until Danil was assigned to the mines.
He could not accept it! He begged the crone.
Danil alone provides the work of half and rallies the rest into reason! His methods boon the yields higher, the water clearer, the animals fatter. He deserves no such fate under the earth.
The crone mother, who seemed to never breathe, did not wane to the man’s cries.
You are not only a son of this kingdom but one of this earth yet the calling of each is above you… You measure the poppy prince’s worth in your heart and loins. As you were sculpted to love and ferment, to forever suckle the graces of a greater man, Danil is favored for beauty and death alone. Pain serves him, the delicacy of another, his absence hallowing. You could never grasp why he must die, boy, but surely you feel it.
eels
Why have I been so afraid of writing? It seems like it will always be a harrowing experience. I remember when I went to a fishing camp at VCU, one where all the boys called me Bambi, there was a time we went electrofishing. I was the only girl and a bit younger, stuck between unending harassment and the privilege of feeling like a little sister. The water was slow and dark. The instructors fed some wires into the creek and we watched from the shore as they shocked the fish. Multitudes floated to the surface, glossy and inanimate. We managed to slip a dozen or so eels into a cooler, our main catch, and I watched them bobbing then slowly writhing like dark braided whips. Some of the fish were incapacitated, but many died, including a small box turtle. The turtle stuck with me. The adults passed these off as inevitable casualties, recreation that caused mass death on a scale I had never witnessed and through a methodology I never knew it was possible to take lives with. I don’t remember what we ended up doing with the eels.
i like the color purple and dinosaurs and johnny cash waking up to the sun on my face. i do not like going to bed or minimalism or wearing bras. i like hearing boys laugh and the ukrainian flag and going grocery shopping alone. i do not like eating leftovers or drowning or when beetles get stuck on their back. i like single mothers and coke mirrors and riding my bike. i do not like ugliness or deadlines or baptisms. i like asymmetry and the sound of cicadas and the nape of people's necks. i do not like missing dog posters or complacency or split ends. i like coming home to someone and someone coming home to me and the mourning doves on my fire escape.

SAWYER
“Drugs are lame.”
“Drugs are amazing,” I said.
One of our first conversations I remember. He was sipping a cream soda and I had a canned margarita. I was trying to convince him and Autumn to sneak into the Salisbury lake and swim. It was cool that May and I felt like porch trash in plastic lawn chairs in their backyard.
Sawyer had three sheets of acid in the freezer. He dosed them out to us and then went to bed. Autumn and I started our trip watching Robert Pattinson movies like Twilight and this insane one called Remember Me where he dies in 9/11. We wanted Sawyer to come and hang out with us but when Autumn called him he cursed her out for waking him up. Moody bastard.
I saw tesselations, the infinite arches of the doorways through their apartment, I saw red, I heard birdsongs all throughout the night so loud and chaotic like they were being played on a speaker, psyop birds. We walked to the fine arts museum barefoot and baptised ourselves in the waterfall pools of koi fish. Stared at the new huge art installation in the field, christened it with our moon eyes, this overbearing warped bust of a woman, white and creepy and ancient looking.
“You are like new women now,” she told us.
It really was the beginning of the end for me.
Autumn and I watched an entire season of Terrace House the rest of the night and the next morning Sawyer told me one of the contestants had killed herself the day before. We viewed it as a manifestation. I went home with a promise of a shooting range date because he had just bought a pistol, a small but girthy mass of metal he probably saw as an extension of his virility. It was dangerous and sexy.
In June he picked me up and took me to a Pipeline river spot I irrevocably consider “ours.” My beloved hometown is cursed with them now. Dead spots of saccharine pain.
i really can’t be in richmond any longer, there’s just too much violent nostalgia everywhere. every road and park and streetlight reminds me of a thousand memories with a thousand different people and it makes me feel like dying…
That was the diary entry I wrote the last day I saw him. I get so poetic and cute when I’m sad so it’s great that I’m a writer. It was a good spot though, a flat prideful rock jutting out above the river surrounded by cattail pools on one side and rapids on the other, nestled under the train tracks with a clear view of the Mayo Bridge. Whitewater, baptism, a Southern vista and wet skin on wet skin: summertime! We laid on the rock like dead lizards. This was when he was openly pining for me, transfixed by some online persona of mine for years, before he had made me forget about Henry.
He had slept with all my friends before and was community dick in Richmond, but I really didn’t care. He was so good at kissing me for the first time, masterful, grabbing my neck with a tender choke (a habit he dropped in a month). This delighted me, a man with the prowess and confidence to assert genuine dominance so early on, or so I thought. I think they’re all a little scared now. It’s so rare to find a man under age 25 who isn’t either pornsick or witholding preferences so unoriginal and compulsory they might as well have copy and pasted the Pornhub homepage into their brain. This was just apart of his stupid pseudo-sigma male charm. We were kissing on his bed for so long he pulled back and just looked at me- Ah... here’s his bad habit. Those eyes testing me, looking for my real intentions and any submission to capitalize on. I really just didn’t fucking care.
He always lit a cigarette after sex with the fan on low and the ashtray on his chest, he said it makes him feel like a Vietnam soldier. We would watch movies and fuck and watch movies then fall asleep on repeat. We would fuck and I would watch the pistol on the bedside table. We would lay in bed naked and stroke each other. His ears were sensitive. He wasn’t the most generous lover, but sex never hurt with him and he was good at foreplay. Bastard. I’ve learned I like to constantly touch someone, or pet them, as a replacement for words but also as a reminder to them that I’m present, I want to touch you, it’s okay, I like being with you. My mother said I was making myself too available. I didn’t think that was the case at the time.
It was easy for me to embrace roles in our relationship that reflected the precedents I’d witnessed as a child. Sawyer drove me absolutely everywhere that summer, just like my mom’s boyfriends, my mom, my babysitters. He bought and cooked me food when I asked, my caregiver, my provider, my boyfriend. He fed me drugs like a baby. I fed him physical touch and listened to him bitch about his heroin addict dad. I really can’t help that’s what draws me to people, for I am woman. A pussy with legs. What even are daddy issues anyway, or was I searching for my mother’s love in a partner? That’s all I had known outside of fishing excursions and golf lessons and extravagant ski trips to Vail provided by my mom’s ex. I guess it was all pretty transactional.
A woman from Autumn’s halfway house went to rehab so she was housesitting for a few months. The house was beautiful as most Virginia colonials are. It was in my favorite neighborhood in the city and had a pool. We went there with Sawyer and a couple of their friends and larped as wealthy private school teenagers (which I was but they weren’t). Marlboro reds and shrooms and chlorine, pink then purple then black sky, more shrooms. I stared at him chain smoking with his friend and their chest tattoos exposed and bare, the amalgamation of ink his tattoo artist ex-girlfriends gave him on full display, almost entirely engulfing his right arm and trickling down onto his legs dipped in the pool. “MOM” on his forearm. The Brand of Sacrifice on his ankle. So many girls have marked him, I thought.
We went on precariously enamored with each other for a long time.
“Do you have a crush on me?” I liked to stir him up.
“Yeah. I like you. I talk about you to my coworker, nice things.”
“Mm…”
“Do you like me?” he asked.
“I worship you.” I ran my mouth to see his reaction or because I really meant it, probably. He hugged me after that. Started talking about our damn fight.
“You didn’t have to scream ‘fuck you’ at me last night.”
“You didn’t have to tell me you never wanted to see me again,” I said. An uppercut.
“True.”
That shut him up for the first time.
I let a lot of shit slide because I was so attracted to him. I let him fill me with words because he was good at talking and had a lot to say but did not let me fill him back. He did not ask me questions. He did not let me flesh out my personhood or let me prove myself as a woman with interests just as cultured and varied as his. He made me a bit of a bimbo. He made me feel genuinely beautiful yet he made me feel like I was entering the next level of mental retardation. He was pretentious in the way only hot people can get away with. I thought he understood the burden of being hot- through the boy pathology- and understood the baggage that came with having a slight God complex. He also satisfies the running social theory I have that most genuine sociopathic tendencies I’ve encountered are in objectively sexy people. Sawyer is not a good person. I think he has Narcissistic personality disorder, but spending any more time psychoanalyzing him would be a jaded waste of life. He was a decent boyfriend- but not a good friend, burning as many bridges as possible. Oh, but he’s just so tortured and broken- I can fix him!
I can fix you male manipulator poster child, I can fix you skater white trash, I can fix you teenage alcoholic, I can fix you terminally broke manwhore. Because I’m different and I’m obsessed with you and I can be like your mom. All you have to do is call me baby. It’s that thought pattern again, the obsessive and spiralling one. I was the one that left Sawyer when I moved to New York at the end of the summer but I think it hurt me harder and longer. I left him with a letter that he probably threw away by now.
I like the person I like to be inside of me all the time, hands inside of me, tongue inside of me, hair inside of me, skin inside of me, groin inside of me, words inside of me, thoughts inside of me, everything they care about inside of me. I still wear his clothes sometimes.

ELIAS
My post-911 childhood brain was plagued with internet addiction and my mother’s reality tv background noise. A latchkey child with a permanently glazed gaze, fathered by television as Americans should be raised. Elias was one of the only other black kids in our middle school. He was charming in a weird way, like a pug. I credit him with initiating my most permeating media addictions, that being anime and YouTube deep dives and texting dependency. He awakened in 11-year-old me the new-age generational curse of conflating online relationships with the emotional depth of real life ones. First date was at an art museum, second at the manga section of Barnes and Noble, but the interactions that made me love him were in impassioned emailing and text conversations.
It’s 2012 and the iPad is full of baby’s first porn and messages talking strangers in their 30s out of suicide. The world is lip gloss greased screens and webcam stripteases and dress-up games and One Direction smut. Teen girls are unashamed and untouchable, godlike. My mom found the porn but it blew over quickly and I didn’t care because Elias thought it was funny.
I took up baking for him and forced my myriad of babysitters to drive me to the grocery store and work the oven. I would walk up to his lunch table and offer him and his friends chocolate cupcakes as an offer of girlhood and domesticity. What a curse- realizing how fulfilling taking up hobbies for boys was. The next regression was just making a boy my hobby entirely. I chiseled my personality to fit his ideal, which was still very much white girls, but felt like a fair exchange for the specialized attention he was giving me for the first time in my life. A couple years past a decade with all the transactional nuances of being a woman. I really was obsessed with Elias, accosting my friends about their private conversations with him and staring at his availability status. But it all felt like love, love, love, festering in me. Elias wasn’t the only infatuation of this time but he was the only boy.
I always had really hot babysitters. I don’t know where my mom kept hiring all these pretty girls but there were dozens of them. Courtney was the most loving, Kim would braid my hair while I played her boyfriend’s Grand Theft Auto game, Sofia was the was the buzz of my neonatal bisexual friends, and Lauren had a pool in her apartment complex. I learned Lauren was a pushover early on and being the freaky kid I was she was often entertaining my antics. There is a poignant memory of us playfighting on my bed, lifting up her shirt and resting my head on her stomach, and the acknowledgement of breasts for the first time that were not my mother’s. I don’t remember Lauren’s face but I remember her peach lace bra that day and her belly button piercing and the flooding turmoil of being aware of another woman’s body. It felt like raw shame and falling asleep in a warm bathtub.
“Were they big? Did you touch them?” Elias asked me when I told him.
“I don’t know. I’m not gay.”
“You’re lucky, I touch my shoulders and pretend they’re boobs.”
I believed him that I was lucky. I did not believe my own statements, but that repression didn’t last long.
Elias left Virginia and moved to Phoenix the summer before eighth grade. We went to my country club with a couple of my friends on his last day and I never saw him again, leaving me with astroturf burns and a portrait of me in my yearbook. I didn’t think about Elias much after that but his cast-iron branding was etched into my type in boys forever. Nerdy and sweet and disenfranchised with a penchant for video games.
Crush Manifesto 02
The coke must have left me wired that night because I ended up barely sleeping and mindlessly scrolling on my phone with glazed eyes and cracked skin. I felt so dull lying there, thinking about the layer of grease that probably coated my post-coital body and how I was going to ask Trey to drive me home in the morning and wishing I was in my ex’s bed. I pretended to wake up at the same time as him.
“That fight was crazy last night.”
“Yeah. It was McGregor’s first knockout.”
Okay. I quickly got dressed and he got the memo I wanted to leave.
“I like your truck.”
“Thank you.”
It was a black GMC, a big dick car, and an alpha male moment I was not immune to the charms of. I’ve always loved the submissiveness of being driven as the novelty of carting around my carless friends wore off. I can make your passenger seat look pretty, bare thighs on leather and dashboard perfume. I can adorn your manhood on wheels like the patron saint of transportation and stare at your side profile for as long as I want. I remember each car in near erotic detail.
Henry’s piece of shit stick-shift was so low to the ground I felt every intonation of his hands on the wheel jolt my body. He was driving us to some river spot he found a few summers ago and I still remember sticking my head out the window to the bracing August air of Riverside Drive, how the wind pushed his hair back behind his ears, the veins on his hands when he groped the clutch, when he turned and looked at me when we crossed the bridge and I thought nothing this sexy or blissful has happened to anyone before.
Sawyer’s Jeep Grand Cherokee had permanent dents of late alcoholism engraved into its body just as much as they were in his, and it was hot. I would crawl through his sunroof and he would grab my thigh and tell me to shoot his gun out of it. Chrome grill reflections out of the lights. He played music so loud I felt it inside of me and would slam his hands on the steering wheel off-beat. We would drive for hours and I would play with his hair the whole time.
This sentimentality of the intense personhood witnessed in my lovers’ car rides is not a new phenomenon to my brain. It is a masturbatory practice to romanticize every experience, object, or person in my life. It is obsessive and debilitating and enthralling. This started with Elias Johnson.

Crush Diary 01
“We can grab a couple beers and go to my room. I have some coke in there, too.”
This was my most recent proposal of courtship at the time of writing this and is perhaps some of the most effective words anyone can say to me. A promise of escape from the sausage party watching MMA fights in the living room, a promise of my free drugs of choice, a promise of sex, a promise of attention and feeling desired. I am beyond the shame of being called an easy woman. I am simple.
It wasn’t the first time we hooked up and I was considerably more lucid than our initial encounter, but jacked up enough on Coors Light and Adderall to be down for anything yet again. After a couple lines and bong rips we got into the motions of things rather quickly. It was fun but left a large part of what I find so endearing about fumbling sex with pseudo-strangers unfulfilled: the tension and hours of lingering looks and slight groping that I discovered are so psychologically important. I think so much enjoyment from these types of encounters for women are rooted in the fantasy of foreplay and things so detached from the physical act itself. I’ve adopted precursory activities into my routine of dating people to check these boxes, my favorites being watching horror movies and beating unsuspecting men at video games. The angst of emasculation after countering their button-smashing with a 3-0 stock victory in Super Smash Brothers is such a tangible rush of pressure that I like to think cements my place as “not like those other girls you’ve fucked.” I’m that cool girl that will watch you play PlayStation online with your buddies then suck your dick after, I’m that down girl, that chill girl, that dateable girl. It didn’t quite happen that way this time, though.
His name is Trey. Trey and I were too fundamentally different for this routine to result in anything meaningful, because he was my frat boy rebound and I was the elusive art school piece of ass he met through his best friend’s girlfriend. We didn’t ask about each other’s lives or interests because there was no point in pretending we cared. There was no point in forcing a talking stage and investing in our sober personalities. Just reciprocated loneliness and kissing with our eyes open.
