“Momma, can I stay here tonight..?” (for canon)

Momma looks at the big hopper, and smiles gently before nodding. “Why of course, Dustin. Make yourself at home, dear. May I ask just what brings you here at this time?”

She raises an eyebrow at him.

Dustin shrugs slightly, looking uncomfortable. “It’s nothing really... just feeling a bit overcrowded is all.” He mumbles. A freight train was making an overnight stay at their yard, and Dustin was feeling very nervous around so many strangers. Especially as most of them seemed to find enjoyment in making fun of him.

He steps inside, glancing around Momma’s shed. “It’s so much quieter here... thank you.”

She nods. "I don't really blame you. Some of them can be a bit roudy."

She smiles. "You're very welcome. You, and all the other frieght are more than welcome to stay here any time. Anything you need right now, Dustin?"

Dustin nods slightly. “Yeah, just before I left they’d started a wrestling match with the Rockies.”

He hesitates for a few moments before hugging Momma tightly. “I don’t want to go back until they’ve all gone..” He mumbles quietly, his voice shaking slightly. “They’re really horrible... to me at least, the others seem to like them all.”

She freezes the moment the big hopper hugs her before returning the hug, and rubbing his back. "It's alright, sweetheart."

She sighs. "Why is it always you and Flat Top that get picked on the most?" She asks herself before shaking her head

“I was being nice to them Momma, I swear.” Dustin mumbles softly. “I don’t get why they were being mean to me...”

He steps back slightly, quickly drying his eyes. “Please don’t make me go back tonight.” He looks at her with wide, anxious eyes, “All the visiting trucks are staying in our shed, I can’t get any peace, and they really aren’t nice...”

Momma smiles warmly. "Of course, I won't make you go back. I would never do that, Dustin. You should know that."

She gently wipes the tears from his eyes. "You're okay, Dustin. You're okay."

He nods slightly, smiling faintly. “Thank you, Momma...” The hopper’s eyes widen as he remembers something. “Oh, of course! There was something else I needed to talk to you about.”

He carefully reaches into his pocket, taking out a tiny, brown rabbit. “I found her outside the freight shed on my way here. I don’t think she’s been getting much food from the looks of it..” He looks worried, holding the tiny creature protectively in his hands.

Momma smiles. "Of course, Dustin!"

She gasps softly at the sight of the little rabbit. "Oh dear. I have a little bit of something to feed her. I'm sure I have something to keep her warm too. I can get her a box to sleep in too."

She gently stroked the little rabbit's back with her finger. "Poor little baby.."

The rabbit trembles slightly as Momma strokes her, shifting uneasily in Dustin’s hands.

Dustin looks worried. “Do you think she’s going to be okay?” He asks softly, carefully holding the bunny a little more securely. “She seems so scared...” The hopper is very fond of animals, and he’s already taken a shine to the little rabbit.

Momma is silent for a few moments. "Well, was she able to move around alright when you found her? If she's hurt, I'll have to see what I can do. I'll grab a box and blanket so that she can rest. I'm sure she's had it rough."

Momma skates into the living room before grabbing a blanket off the couch and placing it in a cardboard box. She returns, holding the box out to him. "You can put her in here while I get her something to eat, unless you want to keep holding her."

Dustin nods, gently stroking the rabbit. “I think so. She was in shock though I think, she was frozen and just shaking when I found her. I don’t think she’s bleeding though.” The little rabbit is still trembling slightly, but she doesn’t seem as panicked as when Dustin found her.

He glances up as Momma returns, accepting the box. “Thank you.” He murmurs softly, smiling gratefully. He carefully places the bunny in the box, holding the box carefully against his chest. He gently strokes the little rabbit, smiling happily down at it.

She nods. "You're welcome."

She retreats to the kitchen to see if she had any vegetables in the refrigerator before she returns with small bits of a carrot. "I think this might help her perk up a bit."

She offered them to Dustin.

Dustin nods slightly in agreement, taking the carrot pieces and placing them in the box. “We’ll have to make sure we can get her some more leafy food too though, carrots can be bad for rabbits in big amounts.”

The rabbit sniffs at the carrot pieces, before starting to cautiously nibble them. Dustin smiles in relief as she does so. “It should be okay for now, though.”

She nods. "Figured it would be good to get some food in her system though. I'll have to go out looking and see what I can find. Just a little something to hold her over until we can get her some more."

She chuckles softly as she watches the little rabbit eat. "Well, as young as she is, she might become dependent on us. Hard telling. In the meantime, we'll have to take care of her."

For a moment Dustin looks hopeful. “D-Do you think I’d be able to look after her?” He asked softly, tearing his gaze away from the rabbit to look at Momma. “I know what to do, I’ve looked after rabbits before. I actually had to transport some once.”

He chuckles softly, blushing slightly. “They couldn’t find a stock car in time, so they ended up using me to transport about fifty little bunnies.” He reaches into the box to gently stroke the rabbit. “I think it was the best job of my life.”

She smiles. "Why of course! You already have knowledge of how to take care of one! Besides, she probably trusts you more than she does me."

She chuckles softly. "I'm sure it was nice for both you and the little rabbits."

The hopper’s smile brightened, and his face practically lit up with delight. “I’ll take really good care of her!” He promises, still stroking the rabbit carefully.

He nods in agreement, still smiling. “We took them to this lovely little rabbit farm, where humans get to stroke them and play with them. I absolutely loved it. They let me play with them too, as long as I was careful. They’re small compared to humans, but they’re even tinier compared to us.”

Momma smiles and chuckles softly. "I'm sure you will. She probably feels more comfortable with you anyway."

She nods. "Apparently humans think it's incredible how large we are, yet how gentle we can be. I guess they don't really expect that." she shrugs.

“Some of the humans were scared of me.” He murmurs softly, looking a little sad. “Although- I was a bit scared of them too.” He blushes slightly, a little embarrassed to admit he was scared of humans.

He keeps stroking the rabbit carefully, smiling softly. “Can I sit down somewhere?” He asks softly.

Momma nods. "We are usually a bit intimidating to humans, and I'd say you're right not to trust them. They're not.. exactly always pleasant."

She smiles. "Of course, darling. You can sit on the couch if you want."

“Some of them are nice...” Dustin mumbles quietly. He likes humans, a lot of them were very nice to him. Some of them scare him though, if he doesn’t know them.

He smiles and nods. “Thank you.” He makes his way over to the couch, slowly sitting down. He winces and gasps softly, pain shooting through his back as he sits down.

Momma immediately becomes concerned once she sees him in pain. She skates over to him. "Did you hurt yourself on your way here, or are you sore from work? Did someone hurt you?" She fretted.

"Do you need an ice pack or some medication?" She raises an eyebrow at him.

Dustin immediately goes silent, dropping his gaze. He doesn’t want to tell Momma that one of the visiting trucks had hurt him, and it hadn’t been an accident. He just quietly shakes his head, focusing on the rabbit in his lap.

Momma sighs. "Dustin, I know that when you're quiet, you're hiding something. Did someone hurt you? You can tell me, and I'll take care of it, okay?"

She smiles gently, not exactly wanting to rub his back, out of fear of making his pain worse than what is already is.

Dustin shakes his head again. He doesn’t want Momma to get angry.

Eventually, after a few minutes, he speaks up. “O-One of the visiting trucks kicked me.” He mumbles, his voice incredibly quiet. “Th-They didn’t let me sit on the sofa, I had to sit on the floor.. o-one of them kept kicking me whenever the others weren’t looking..”

A few tears trickle down his cheeks and he quickly brushes them away, turning his attention back to the rabbit and starting to stroke it again, hoping to calm himself down.

Momma sighs before shaking her head. "Okay. I'll take care of it. Looks like I'm going to have to get Poppa to.. knock some sense into them, so to speak. He's done to Greaseball when he challenged Poppa to a fight, and he will surely do it again if he sees fit. Poppa is stronger than all of us believe it or not." She chuckles softly.

"It's alright. They can't hurt you here. If they do, they'll be lucky they'd be standing." She growls softly deep in her chest

“N-No, they don’t live here, h-he’s not allowed to do anything.. I-I don’t want anyone in trouble because of me..!” The hopper sounds distressed, more tears starting to fall. “He said my friends wouldn’t like me if I told anyone!”

He holds the box containing the rabbit a little tighter, closing his eyes tightly and shaking his head.

Momma shakes her head. "Then it's technically the other train guard's responsibility to make sure they behave. Besides, they can't do anything since you were kicked numerous times. We have a reason to let Poppa go at them. They called the tune, and now they have to pay the piper."

She sighs. "What they said isn't true. That means they knew what they did was wrong. Honestly, punks like that need a good rattling... but.. I could get Coal to scare the loving Starlight out of them. He can most definitely be intimidating if he wants to be. I just need to.. convince him to do it."

Dustin simply nods quietly, leaning his head against Momma’s shoulder. “I’m sorry I let people be mean to me so much.” He mumbles quietly, carefully lifting the bunny out of the box and holding her close to his chest, stroking her gently.

“I asked him to stop, I asked nicely... he just laughed and acted like he didn’t know what I was talking about..” He sobs quietly, focusing on stroking his rabbit.

Momma sighs. "It's okay, honey. You did nothing wrong. I'll be sure to let whoever runs the yard know about this, and give them a fair warning. If thier trucks misbehave again, they'll all be on the floor out cold from Poppa.. taking care of business."

She reluctantly rubs his back a bit, careful not to make the pain any worse. "You can stay here as long as you want, okay?"

Dustin nods slightly, his sobs dying down. “Th-Thank you, Momma. D-Do you have anything that would make my back stop hurting? It feels really bad...” He murmurs quietly.

He’s not sure how bad the damage is, but he assumes his back is definitely bruised given how much it’s currently hurting.

She nods. "I have some pain medication and a couple ice packs, would you like for me to get them? It might be a good idea to let Wrench take a look at your back sometime. I'd hate to see you seriously hurt."

She gently wipes his tears with her apron. "I can let you sleep in my bed tonight too if you want."

Dustin nods, smiling softly. “Oh yes please, that would be lovely.”

His smiles fades slightly, and he looks a little uneasy at the thought of Wrench checking him over. The repair truck has always intimidated him a bit, part of him is scared to go and see her. “Maybe...” He mumbles softly.

His uneasy expression changes to one of surprise at her next comment. “Are you sure? You wouldn’t mind?” He asks softly.

Momma smiles and nods. "Of course I'm sure! Dustin, you need someone who has experience to check you to see if there's anything serious going on. I know, Wrench can be intimidating to some, but you need to out your health and well being first."

She gets up before heading to the bathroom and getting some pain medication before grabbing an ice pack, and sitting back down on the couch, and giving the medication and the glass of water. "Once you take that, you can put the ice pack where it hurts, okay?"

Dustin reluctantly places the bunny back in the box, and accepts the water and medicine. He quickly swallows the pills, taking a sip of water. “Thank you, Momma.” He murmured softly, smiling gratefully.

He takes another sip of water before placing the glass on the table, and taking the ice pack. He reaches behind himself to press the ice pack against his back, wincing slightly at the movement.

She herself was getting ready to make herself a but of something to eat, but that can wait. She wants to make sure Dustin is okay first.

She freezes the moment the big hopper hugs her before returning the hug, and rubbing his back. "It's alright, sweetheart."

She retreats to the kitchen to see if she had any vegetables in the refrigerator before she returns with small bits of a carrot. "I think this might help her perk up a bit."

She offered them to Dustin.

The rabbit sniffs at the carrot pieces, before starting to cautiously nibble them. Dustin smiles in relief as she does so. “It should be okay for now, though.”

She chuckles softly as she watches the little rabbit eat. "Well, as young as she is, she might become dependent on us. Hard telling. In the meantime, we'll have to take care of her."

She smiles. "Why of course! You already have knowledge of how to take care of one! Besides, she probably trusts you more than she does me."

She chuckles softly. "I'm sure it was nice for both you and the little rabbits."

The hopper’s smile brightened, and his face practically lit up with delight. “I’ll take really good care of her!” He promises, still stroking the rabbit carefully.

She nods. "Apparently humans think it's incredible how large we are, yet how gentle we can be. I guess they don't really expect that." she shrugs.

Momma nods. "We are usually a bit intimidating to humans, and I'd say you're right not to trust them. They're not.. exactly always pleasant."

“Some of them are nice...” Dustin mumbles quietly. He likes humans, a lot of them were very nice to him. Some of them scare him though, if he doesn’t know them.

Momma sighs before placing an ice pack against his eye. "You can't just fight anyone, Flat Top. You need to be careful. I'm afraid one day you might get into a fight you might not get out of.."

She looks him over for other wounds. "Who did you get into a fight with?"

Flat-Top winces slightly at the cold sting of the ice pack, letting out a slight hiss of pain. He fights back the urge to push it away, knowing Momma is just trying to help him.

“Some steamer called Piston, he’s from this yard a few miles away. He kept trying to get on my nerves and piss me off, so I whacked him in the nose. Didn’t expect him to fight back.” He mutters, shrugging slightly.

Momma sighs and shakes her head. "You should have expected that. No one is going to just sit there and take it. They're going to return the punch, and maybe even go a bit overboard. Hold that ice pack to your eye, okay? I'll see if I can find something for the pain."

She opens a cabinet before she starts searching through it.

“It ain’t fair!” He snaps, kicking the table leg in frustration. “He started it! I ignored him for ages, I really did! B-But then he started saying shit about you and Dustin, a-and I just kinda lost it..”

Still holding the ice pack in place he rests his head on the table, still looking angry. “It wasn’t my fault.”

She sighs and shakes her head. "Sosometimes people and other trains say things to rile you up. They try to get to you. You just have to let those things go. He targeted you because he knew he could get to you."

She comes back with a bottle of liquid medicine. "It's all I have. I usually use it if Leo comes by and hurts himself. It's a children's medicine, but I suppose it would help."

Flat-Top lifts his head from the table, scowling. “I ain’t just gonna ignore someone insulting my best friend! You always said we should up for ourselves and for our friends, but then when I do it I suddenly did the wrong thing!”

He sits up straight, folding his arms and pouting. “How did I get stuck staying at the orphanage..” He mutters under his breath.

He glances up as Momma approaches him, sneering at the thought of being given children’s medicine. He shrugs and nods though, just wanting the pain to go away.

She sighs. "True. I did say that, but when they're just running thier mouth, it's best to ignore them, but once they get physical, then I would way lay them. I understand where you're coming from though. They can be rather rude and unpleasant. I admit, if someone laid a finger on any of the kids, I wouldn't hesitate to beat the daylights out of 'em."

She opens the bottle, and brings out a small spoon. We'll try a teaspoon for now." She carefully pours the liquid into the spoon before offering it to him.

“Let’s put it this way: the stuff he said about Dustin is stuff I’m never gonna repeat.” He mutters, his hands curling into fists just thinking about it.

He glances warily at the spoonful of medicine offered to him, before accepting it and quickly swallowing. It tastes better than he’d expected, but he still hates taking medicine.

“Speaking of ‘em, where are the kids? Usually got them grabbing at your ankles as soon as you come through the door.”

She sighs. "I don't understand why some trains and people are like that. Why can't they just not say anything of they don't have nothing nice to say at all?"

She smiles. "The children are out playing, but I'm sure Leo is looking for me."

"Momma?" A little soft voice called out into the room. Momma grows soft before looking back at the little boy.

"I'm in here, Leo." She smiles gently.

The brick truck nods slightly, picking at the bandages wrapped around his arm. “Speak of the devil.” He mutters as he hears Leo’s voice. He doesn’t mind the kid too much, he’s certainly the least annoying as far as Flat-Top’s concerned.

He pauses for a moment, fiddling with his brick. “So... am I getting a punishment?” He asks hesitantly, glancing up at Momma. “Fighting’s against the rules and all..”

Leo walks into the room, holding his teddy bear that is about as big as him. He looks up at Momma. "Momma, can I be with you for a while?"

Momma smiles and nods. "Of course, honey. Come on in."

She looks over at Flat Top. "I'd say no. You did stand up for Dustin, which is good. All I have to say is to be careful in who you choose to hit next time." She chuckles softly.

“Hey kid,” He mumbles awkwardly, waving slightly as Leo enters the room. It still feels strange being around human children, he’s still not quite used to it yet.

Flat-Top stares in amazement, stunned by Momma’s words. “I- I’m not getting punished? You punish me for everything usually, this is first..” The brick truck certainly doesn’t have much by way of tact.

Leo shifts nervously when he sees Flat Top before shyly waving. He clings to his teddy bear as he almost cautiously joins Momma's sides, hanging onto her skirt.

Momma smiles and nods. "I can't punish you for standing up for someone else. You just need to build up a bit more muscle."

She chuckles softly.

Flat-Top sighs, propping his head up with his hand. "I've been trying, nothing's working though."

He flexes his other arm, showing his scrawny amount of muscle. "I've been trying to exercise and keep a good diet, I'm still a skinny little pri-" He pauses, not wanting to swear in front of Leo. Or Momma, for that matter. "-guy."

Momma shoots him a glare the moment she hears him start to swear before nodding when she sees him correct himself. She would rather not have Leo hear that particular type of language.

"Well, it takes time. You need to keep a steady routine. Otherwise, you won't see much progress. Of course, the change won't be instant, but you will notice a few changes eventually."

Leo looks up at Momma, and practically clings to her. It's obvious he's not exactly comfortable with being around others.

“Momma, can I stay here tonight..?” (for canon)

Momma looks at the big hopper, and smiles gently before nodding. “Why of course, Dustin. Make yourself at home, dear. May I ask just what brings you here at this time?”

She raises an eyebrow at him.

He steps inside, glancing around Momma’s shed. “It’s so much quieter here... thank you.”

She nods. "I don't really blame you. Some of them can be a bit roudy."

She smiles. "You're very welcome. You, and all the other frieght are more than welcome to stay here any time. Anything you need right now, Dustin?"

Dustin nods slightly. “Yeah, just before I left they’d started a wrestling match with the Rockies.”

She freezes the moment the big hopper hugs her before returning the hug, and rubbing his back. "It's alright, sweetheart."

She sighs. "Why is it always you and Flat Top that get picked on the most?" She asks herself before shaking her head

“I was being nice to them Momma, I swear.” Dustin mumbles softly. “I don’t get why they were being mean to me...”

Momma smiles warmly. "Of course, I won't make you go back. I would never do that, Dustin. You should know that."

She gently wipes the tears from his eyes. "You're okay, Dustin. You're okay."

He nods slightly, smiling faintly. “Thank you, Momma...” The hopper’s eyes widen as he remembers something. “Oh, of course! There was something else I needed to talk to you about.”

Momma smiles. "Of course, Dustin!"

She gasps softly at the sight of the little rabbit. "Oh dear. I have a little bit of something to feed her. I'm sure I have something to keep her warm too. I can get her a box to sleep in too."

She gently stroked the little rabbit's back with her finger. "Poor little baby.."

The rabbit trembles slightly as Momma strokes her, shifting uneasily in Dustin’s hands.

She nods. "You're welcome."

She retreats to the kitchen to see if she had any vegetables in the refrigerator before she returns with small bits of a carrot. "I think this might help her perk up a bit."

She offered them to Dustin.

The rabbit sniffs at the carrot pieces, before starting to cautiously nibble them. Dustin smiles in relief as she does so. “It should be okay for now, though.”

She chuckles softly as she watches the little rabbit eat. "Well, as young as she is, she might become dependent on us. Hard telling. In the meantime, we'll have to take care of her."
