el Seedâs Mural in Manshayet Naser: âThe faces of around 50 different buildings in the Zaraeeb community of Manshiyat Nasser now form a stunning work of calligraphy. The piece of art uses the words of Saint Athanasius of Alexandria, a Coptic Bishop from the 3rd century, that said: âAnyone who wants to see the sunlight clearly needs to wipe his eye first.ââ (David Degner)
I Am Not Responsible For Your Thoughts
My mom gave me a dress form she used to use when she would sell her aprons at farmerâs markets and I was able to use it for a recent art assignment. When I told her I wanted to use it for art, this probably isnât what she had in mindâŠha
I sat down with the mannequin and wrote all my thoughts I had about the LDS culture and how they teach âmodestyâ to their young women and how it plays into things like victim blaming and rape culture. Also drew inspiration from Barbara Krugerâs iconic âred bars/white textâ thing. I would like to note: I donât believe that âmodestyâ as a concept is a bad thing, but how it is being taught to our girls and our boys is. If anyone has any questions or wants to discuss it, feel free to drop me a line.
I had more to say about it than I thought I did and it was INCREDIBLY cathartic. I just hope it doesnât go over poorly with my professor. Yay for private religious schools

The morning the 2016 Oscar nominations were announced, and five male directors were up (yet again) for the top award, the first people I thought of were the Original Six. Thirty-five years after they started fighting for womenâs rights to direct big studio films, there has only ever been one woman to win Best Director, and in the six years since Kathryn Bigelow won, no new women have been nominated in the field at all. Did they feel that their fight had been worth it? Had they ever lost hope?
For Pacific Standard, Rachel Syme meets with and interviews the Original Six, a group of women who started the Directors Guild of Americaâs Womenâs Steering Committee in 1979, and launched a class action lawsuit against the major studios of Hollywood for sexism in the industry. (via therumpus)

Why is the United States so far behind? Itâs time to #raisethewage
Weâre that far behind because widespread poverty is highly profitable to the affluent and powerful.
wtf I just googled the US minimum wage and itâs equivalent to ÂŁ4.68 thatâs pretty fucking criminal
On Wednesday, Floyd Mayweather attended a rally for Donald Trump in Youngstown, Ohio wearing a type of headscarf usually worn by Muslim women. Mayweather canvassed the crowd, fists out, daring anyone to take him on.
âIâm just a little Muslim lady. Anybody wanna try to punch a Muslim?â asked Mayweather. When no response came, he tried again. âI said, ANYBODY WANNA TRY TO PUNCH A MUSLIM?! COME ON, TAKE A SHOT! MONEYâS READY!â
Mayweather then wandered through the crowd at the Winner Aviation building, looking people in the eye and asking softly, âYou got a problem with a tiny, little Muslim lady?â A Trump supporter wearing a cowboy hat and wraparound sunglasses approached Mayweather, then abruptly turned around after a five second stare down.
Mayweather made his way to the exit forty-five minutes later as the crowd stared at him silently. He then ripped off his head scarf and yelled, âI thought so!!â as he stormed out the door with his twelve-person entourage.

growing new skin
By Mona Eltahawy
i have to grow new skin when you leave
you know that pink, raw, brand new skin that appears under a scab?
iâm like that, all over
waiting for that new flesh to harden a bit
to feel less raw to the touch, to my touch, impossible to touch
do you know? do you have any idea?
sometimes i know you do
i can see it when we look at each other when we fuck
i know your skin comes off
peeling off when we see each other as weâre fucking, see each other
as weâre fucking, not look but see
and you reach for my face and your mouth finds my lips
youâre selfish with your kisses
i think youâre scared to kiss me, scared your skin will come off andÂ
youâll be left with that raw, pink, under flesh, scared
that youâll have to grow new skin when you leave.
New research shows that black students are less likely to exhibit behavioral problems when their teachers are black.
However, for instance Black male teachers represent only 2% of all public school teachers in America. Lack of representation leads to a bias against Black teachers and as a result theyâre less likely to get a position at school. This is a perfect example of how one problem leads to another one and so on and so forth. But the root of this problem is racism.

I wonder how much of the data is because black students behave better with black teachers, and how much is because black teachers are less likely to have knee-jerk negative reactions to black students.
I mean, the end result is the same: Â we need more black teachers. Â Iâm just wondering.
exactly that and the way black people and white people discipline is different. and itâs not even about spankings and fearing that in class. itâs more like whatever tactics white teachers are using usually arenât going to be taken seriously.
Bernie, Hillary, and the New Democratic Party
