I'm not saying romance couldn't be in the future, but I don't think it was in the past

I've been thinking about Zaha's relationship with Ciel lately. I know everyone assumes that they're former lovers, and maybe there's outside info I don't have that says that outright, but the more I think about their interactions, the less I read them as romantic partners.

Consider: Ciel is Zaha's former best friend's younger sister. When she first appears in the show, she is rescuing Mondo and Rokuna from Zaha's scheme, and he gets extremely angry over it. Is it because his ex is doing it, or because his ex-friend's sister is doing something for strangers that his ex-friend didn't do for him?

Later, when Ciel tells Zaha what really happened to Larc, she talks about how she watched her brother die, and not about her own feelings for Zaha at all. He's shocked when she comforts him. She doesn't tell him she still loves him, only that he hasn't changed. He flies off on his own at the end of the episode instead of sticking around Ciel to get reacquainted. He's surprised when she saves him from Reda near the end of the series. None of that points to a romantic relationship, but rather a younger sister trying to help her late brother's friend come to terms with what has happened to him.
