My piece for Sylvain Angst Weekend!

Sylvain wearing a Gautier crest-shaped wolf collar. He needs it to protect the sheep (Fodlaners) from the wolves (Srengi). But it also keeps anyone from getting too close. Inspired by doeprince's comic Corpse, which I highly recommend!

Twitter user baefakemon had a super cute idea called Baby Boom, which is essentially megas for baby Pokemon that draw on their evolutions when they hold an everstone. So of course I had to do Happiny!

Because Blissey has a very angelic look, I tried to make Happiny Boom more cherub-like, with short curly hair and more white in her design. Also, since this transformation requires an everstone, I figured it could take the place of her oval stone.

What can I say? I love me a shameless self-insert.

This character has a few inspirations, mostly corporate clothing like blazers and pencil skirts mixed with a cartoon bee mascot. I wanted her to look very corporate, she's a busy bee with a buzz cut. I thought about giving her a crown so she's also a queen bee but I need to stop somewhere.

Fogdrift from StormClan's Folly! Poor girl deserved better, but I really like the bit of characterization we got from her. Also good on her for not acknowledging Stripestar at the end.

My poor neglected pens were dying trying to get some thick outlines for this piece. I wanted to have a dark fog covering her eyes as though Stripestar were already forgetting what she looked like. I also really like the dark green paper, I didn't want to use the same gray paper I had for Moonpaw and I think the green gives her a nice eerie look.

A lemon-themed Scraggy for a friend of mine, carrying some gachapons. Scraggy is his favorite Pokemon and he runs a podcast called The Answer Is a Lemon!

Moonpaw! I actually really like that the authors chose the orange half to be "evil." It would've been thematically simple to make her darker half the… well… darker half.

Having the orange half I think lends to more interesting visuals. I love the idea of whenever the voice is speaking, she becomes a flickering flame that only Moonpaw can see.

As for the technical aspects of this: It's a sketch laser printed onto some colored paper. The flames, eye and mouth were done with acrylic brush pens and the shading was done with colored pencil.

Second piece with acrylic markers! I wanted to do a tiger as through it were swimming through lava, with the cooled, hardened pieces of igneous rock being it's stripes.

There's a few things I'd do different if I did it again, such as moving the lighter colors to be less shading and behave more like how something red-hot would, but all in all I'm glad I go the idea to paper.

My first fully-finished piece with acrylic markers! I got a pack for the holidays and since there were the most shades of blue, I wanted to try them out, so I went with the pun of making it a sea lion.

Very fun to use but also not a ton of ability to blend or make gradients, so the colors you have are really what you have. I've got to see how many shades of orange and yellow I have, but I'd love to do a magma tiger next.

"I want to watch you fail."

Curlfeather! I love the description for her in the prologue of Star. I love how it’s a little vague of whether she’s truly haunting Splashtail or if these dreams are his own paranoia and guilt manifesting. I’m not 100% happy with how I portrayed her injuries, and I also made her too yellow, so I might try drawing her again in the future but overall I like this piece!

I started these with the thesis of “Can I make Chansey and Blissey more of a menace?” and the answer is YES! I have some ideas around each one, so I’ll go through them individually:

Cracked Egg

I just really, really love the type combo of Normal/Ghost, and was determined on both of these to give a type combination that mitigated the weakness to Fighting while removing the secondary types’ weakness to Ghost. 

After choosing Ghost, having a cracked egg with egg white ghosts seemed obvious. I also wanted to make her more chicken-like, as a nod to chickens being descendants of the T-rex.

Iron Nurse

I don’t know if the Pokemon models can handle transparency, but I love the idea of an incubator holding what may be the last living Pokemon eggs. I went with Psychic since I felt like Iron Nurse could monitor the egg and its needs using psychic powers, I also wanted to give it Reflect since I’ll die mad that Blissey can’t learn it.

Something you can’t see here but a piece I’d want to be in the animation is that when Iron nurse attacks, it’s little floating pieces that symbolize Blissey’s skirt would light up and move to its head to resemble Chansey’s feathers. I tried to have elements of both Chansey and Blissey in each one.

Also, unrelated, but I got a new laser printer! I got one because while it can only print in black and white, the ink doesn’t smudge so it’s great for making digital lineart or copying a sketch onto thicker cardstock for coloring.

I was going through my files, ad I had completely forgotten I had made this! While I love Happiny, I always felt like her design was too complex when compared to Chansey and Blissey. I thought it would be fun if the baby egg looked like the eggs in-game, with her shiny referencing both the egg's normal color as well as tying in with Chansey's green shiny.

False Prophet

First art uploaded in... Woof, three years? I've been doing lots of wildlife photo studies on-and-off, but no finished pieces until now.

I posted this sketch on Twitter and got a really positive comment so I decided to finish it! I wanted to draw Frostpaw with a medieval-style halo that incorporated the curled feather sign. You can't tell from the scan, but the halo and feather are in metallic gold, so they reflect the light as you move it around. Very excited for Star, and especially to see what Frostpaw's full name will be!

Mega Clefable

I miss mega evolution, I actually really liked it. Since Clefable never got one, I figured I'd do it myself!

I tried to reverse mirror Gengar's mega evolution, which had it sunk into the ground by lifting Clefable. A lot of fan-made mega evolutions feel very complex, so I wanted to keep this one simple and a natural progression of Clefable. I used circles and crescents to move the weight upward.

I took the brown out of the color palette to lower contrast keep it looking particularly soft, and I'm still not 100% sure of the moon, stars, and ripples, but I wanted to tie in it's Pokedex entry about skipping on lakes on moonlit nights.

I might redo my mega Mew at some point and maybe some other Gen I ideas I've got, like Primeape and Dodrio.

Spotfur

I... Forgot how difficult digital art was. It's been so long I really don't have any grasp on pen pressure, the smoothness of the tablet, any of that. I had to use the Pen tool in illustrator to do the line art, there were grand ambitions of a digitally painted background but that's just not happening, instead I used an old photo I took on a mountain trail. Anyway! I started drawing this after reading Spotfur's Rebellion, and I really liked it. I feel like Spotfur is accidentally the most compelling character in The Broken Code; she joins a rebellion, she's ostracized by her friends and family, her mate is killed, she finds out after he dies that she's pregnant, both of her siblings leave to become housecats, the really weird scene where she pseudo-tries-to-kill-herself with a hawk. It's a lot, so I wanted to draw the moment she see's Stemleaf's body mid-battle. Despite my difficulties with digital art, I like how this came out! Fake logos to stretch my graphic-design muscles

I have a small notebook where I write down design ideas and I really wanted to flex my graphic-design muscles, so here are some logos for things that don't exist!

FauxGluten: I kid you not, I got the base of this idea from the Suite Life of Zack and Cody—specifically the one episode where London pronounces faux as “fox” and causes a misunderstanding. Then while reading Dr. Stone I found out about foxtail millet, which is naturally gluten free, and this whole idea came together.

DNAcandy: The idea for this logo came from when I was resizing an icon of DNA and didn't have the aspect ratio locked, and when I squished the icon it kind of looked like a wrapped candy. I had a few different iterations of this, but I like this one where the line weight for the icon and text is all equal. It gives it a very measured feeling.

Triple Element: I don't know what this logo would actually be for, but I'd been kicking around in my head the idea of a role-playing/video game where everyone is separated into three elemental factions: fire, electricity or ice (thanks Pokemon for burning that trio into my brain). I also really wanted to lean very heavily on the pure use of CMY and the same minimalist angles for each element. I really like these, have no idea what I'll use them for in the future, but I think they're neat.

Clefable Breeds - Gengar Cross

This one's a little special because you can't breed Gengar and Clefable, but the two are so intrinsically linked I wanted to give it a shot anyway. There are a few small details I really like (turning Cleffa's tail the color of Ghastly's body, and just pointing Clefable's wings down to mirror Gengar's spikes) but most of the design is pretty straightforward. I'm pretty proud of how I incorporated Haunter into Clefairy's design, though. Had a lot of fun with these! Pokemon © Nintendo Art © Melindaington
