French artist Jerome Zonder works in pencil, graphite, charcoal, and ink - In his ongoing 'Jeu d'Enfants’ series, Zonder explores issues of brutality and violence in society through placing children in the role of the aggressor. Drawing on the imagery of the pornographic and horror film genres, together with historical archive and media, Zonder creates shocking and macabre tableaux, uncomfortable viewing which often only gets more so as we are drawn past our initial impression and into the midst of some particularly nasty scene of torture or sexual violence.
Zonder works exclusively in drawing - I like the fact that he works on a large scale (these range from 75cm x 75cm to 2.0m x 2.0m) - I would love to see some of these in person - and that he uses several different drawing media, and wildly disparate styles to add drama and interest to his often complex and intense compositions….more to come…
