However, this "balance" is an outward manifestation of alexithymia. Celeste has serious difficulties recognizing, describing, and understanding her own emotions. Her inner world is devoid of vivid emotional color; instead of feelings, she experiences physical sensations (a lump in her throat, a heaviness in her chest, fatigue) and a cold, precise logic.
In conflicts, she doesn't show the expected reactions—no tears, no anger, only an analytical indifference that others mistake for arrogance or callousness. She literally doesn't understand whether someone is angry with her, joking, or sympathetic, relying on learned social patterns. Her decisions are always measured and rational, but devoid of an emotional component, which can seem frightening or unnatural.
Celeste grew up with a loving mother but no father. When she was five, her mother married Arron Bell, bringing his son, Barron, into their lives. Attempts to bring the children closer failed. A "warm relationship" is, from Celeste's perspective, a predictable and mutually respectful relationship. Arron has behaved according to clear rules from the very beginning: he didn't try to force himself into the role of "dad," but rather took on the role of a responsible adult. Celeste values his logic and fairness. For her, he is a source of stability and sound advice. Barron is an unsolvable logical puzzle. His constant hostility has no rational basis, in her view. Therefore, he is classified as a "source of unpredictable negativity." Her reactions to him are not emotional, but practical: ignoring, formally complaining to her father, avoiding. His attempts to "get to her" often simply fail, as she fails to recognize the emotional triggers he presses.
Celeste respects Ashlyn as an effective leader—she sees in her a similar, but more emotionally charged, algorithm. Her "admiration" is a recognition of effectiveness. Her concern that Ashlyn is "taking everything on herself" is a rational assessment of the risk of burnout and decreased team productivity. Her advice to "not worry" is a sincere attempt to optimize the process, not a consolation.
For Celeste, Taylor is an interesting social phenomenon. Her kindness and modesty seem energy-inefficient to Celeste, yet they arouse curiosity. The statement "You're so great" is not a compliment, but a statement of fact based on observation of Taylor's actions. Celeste attempts to analyze her "illogical" actions like a complex equation.
Tyler is the first "glitch" in her system. He evokes not a feeling, but a persistent state of heightened attention and analytical activity. Her "genuine interest" is an obsessive need to understand him. Why does his opposite not repel him, but attract him? Why doesn't his irritation with her "indifference" cause him to stop communicating? He's the first person she studies not as a social object, but almost as a scientific riddle. Their "harmony" is based on the fact that he, like her, often acts straightforwardly; it's just that his driving force is passion, and hers is cold calculation.
Logan is labeled as a "positive/neutral unit" in her system. Her respect and care are a basic program, applied to everyone who isn't a source of trouble and demonstrates adequacy. She will care for his well-being as rationally as she would monitor the functioning of the shared equipment in a project.
