"Loud yet melancholic, effective song structures"

Babymetal and Piko Tarou are not the only ones who are successful overseas. There is a Japanese band who writes their original songs and steadily continue to tour the world.

MONO is the representation of that, originally formed in 1999 by members consisting of Takaakira 'Taka' Goto. The band is known for their instrumental music consisting of loud guitars. Last Autumn, the band released their new album "Requiem For Hell", which was produced by one of America’s highly regarded producers Steve Albini, who also has previously produced for such artists as Nirvana.

The band structure is basic; consisting of two guitars, drums and bass. Depending on the songs, keyboards are incorporated. The new album’s title song was remarkable, and their music was dramatic like Classical music, filled with melancholic melodies. Drums and bass led strong rhythms, and the music kept expanding endlessly.

The song structure of calm to loud, then back to calm was effective. It was easy to get absorbed into their world, even if you were not familiar with the songs. Their flow of sound was intoxicating, like going back and forth between the world of life and death, and light and darkness.

MONO may be far from top chart’s sweet pop music, but they’re definitely worth giving a listen.
