“Tell me something I don’t know. One moment it is delinquents and then it is a bunch of girls with bad attitudes the next. And I see…”things” fly around. And not the weird things I am used to. This is a…active town. To say the least.”

That last part was a little vague but it was meant to be. She didn’t need an adult giving her flak for what she was able to see.

“But you aren’t wrong about me not being from around here. I moved here just recently. As for the cat…”

She looked down at her feline friend before looking back at the man.

“This is Kuro. I work at a small general store nearby. I also happen to be renting a room from the owner and while I was heading out, he decided to bolt out the door. I chased him down the last few bloody blocks!”

Her luck hasn’t been the best as of late and her cat rushing past her was not helping improve it at all.

Shizuo rubbed the nape of his neck with a strong hand, taken aback by the girl’s description of the “active town” which he called his home. He’d never really considered how weird it would seem to outsiders, though he supposed that he alone could easily fall under the description of “weird”. To this, Shizuo hunched his shoulders and grunted in acknowledgement. However, the cat was all too distracting. It made him... uncomfortable. Restless, even. Shizuo had never really been an animal person, but something about this cat, and the way it’s black slits watched him closely, piqued his curiosity.

❝ Kuro, huh? ❞ Bending at the knees, Shizuo descended to the cat’s level, whole body tensing up. Would it attack him? He frowned at the thought but pressed on, reaching a hand up toward the furball. ❝ Is it alright if I... pet him? ❞

The voice came from nowhere, snapping Shizuo out of his calm daze. Hand stuffed firmly in his pocket, his head inclined toward the strange woman, eyebrow nearly reaching his hair line. He had to double-take, checking over his shoulder to be sure she was actually talking to him, but the wind brushed past a flurry of citizens, going about their day as normal. Did he… know this woman? And what cliche was she even talking about?

❝ Well, considering I live in the area… Yeah, I do.❞

Tray of food in hand, and chatter abuzz in the cafe, Shizuo’s earthy hues trailed down to the chair in question. What came next was a supernova of emotions– first confusion, followed by suspicion, then irritation– spiraling out of control in his mind. Hands clenching tighter to the tray, Shizuo turned to glare at the stranger, processing what very well could have been a threat.

And threats did not sit well with the ex-bartender.

❝Or what? ❞he straightened up, tensing into a defensive stance. ❝Doesn’t look like anyone’s sitting there, so what’s your problem? ❞

“Ouch!” Erika’s face contorted in shock at Shizuo’s tug, as she’d been halfway into position to retrieve what she needed from that man. She immediately adopted a look of sadness, tucking her fingertips up against her chest; “But… but Shizu-chan, this guy has something I need!”

“HELP ME! SAVE ME!” the man continued to cry, now trying to shuffle away from the scene despite his broken limbs, “SHE’S INSANE!”

“Oahh, hey, that’s a really mean thing to say! Okay, okay, Shizu-chan—” Erika touched his arm, trying to nudge him away, “Everything is totally better now and you saved the day, I’ll take care of the poor poor guy!”

A pang of guilt surged through Shizuo’s veins, seeing the sudden change in Erika’s demeanor. He slumped, torn between a rock and a hard place as the stranger’s panic only seemed to increase. His grip on Erika’s arm loosened, and he adjusted his glasses and looked away. None of this was adding up.

❝ You still didn’t answer my question, ❞ he said, rubbing his forehead. ❝ And this guy obviously ain’t gonna tell me anything, so... do what you need to do. ❞

Stuffing a hand in his pocket, he looked from Erika to the stranger. Seeing as he wouldn’t be privy to whatever was going on, he’d just have to supervise, or something.
