i am so glad for fanfiction because ever since i was little i shouted from the rooftops that i want to be a writer and every adult (and they did mean well) was telling me how this is such a competitive environment, how it barely pays, how romance writers are mocked and lonely. nobody told me it could be just something that you do, like my dad repairing electronics for fun, or my mom knitting. i said i wanted to be a writer and that meant i wanted to do it for a job. fuck no. i'm so glad you can do repetitive dumb stuff for money and choose to write about kissing FOR FUN. and other people actually read it!!! that's the most surprising part. i would never, in a million years, choose to be published. i am a writer not an author.

Some thoughts and wild speculation about Enjin

(spoilers for gachiakuta chapter 165+ // CW canon-typical human trafficking)

-The first thing he tells Alto upon meeting him is that he won’t get much from selling him.

Enjin doesn’t expect adults to take care of him except to later sell him as property. This is consistent with how Alto describes the orphanage where Enjin was raised.

Based on Alto’s phrasing, kids at the orphanage had been branded prior to the orphanage becoming a “slave market”—in other words, the purpose of the orphanage was always to raise kids with the intention of selling them later. This is further supported by Enjin being branded despite never actually being sold as a slave. However, Enjin blames himself for the kids at his orphanage being sold into slavery.

If you look very closely at the panel on the right, you can see the kids already have brands on their arms prior to Enjin meeting this trafficker. The adults at the orphanage were planning on selling them into slavery anyway, but Enjin still blames himself for it, and the guilt sticks with him for the rest of his life.

-He intended to rescue his former housemates before he joined the Cleaners.

Given that it seems like he never actually did this, he’s instead pursuing other ways to “make himself worthy of his name”—his obsession that allows him to survive the effects of Time Walk.

He sort of takes on a “fatherly” role to the rest of Akuta, but I don’t think he sees it that way. Saving Riyo and Zanka from their prior circumstances and taking care of Rudo after he falls to the Ground is just his way of making himself worthy of his name. He’s trying to make up for the kids he couldn’t save.

-His weird animosity towards Amo

I don’t really know what to say about this? I suppose she did try to kill him, but he does seem unusually hostile towards her even after learning her history.

My wild speculation is that he sees himself and/or his former housemates in her and is lashing out because he doesn’t really know how to cope with that but that’s just me.

Something else on this that is maybe just a coincidence: there are these ghost dolls hanging in the “ritual room” where Amo meets the angel.

If you look at the panel of Enjin as a teenager, he wears a similar doll on his belt, and the face of that doll seems to be the inspiration for his full-face mask.

These LOOK like Teru Teru Bozu: ghost-shaped dolls placed outside windows in Japan to bring on sunny weather.

This makes sense at least for Enjin given his dislike of rain and his jinki being an umbrella, but not so much for Amo. Maybe it’s a coincidence, or maybe this is some further connection between Enjin and Amo.

-He seems to have known Rudo was going to fall

Okay maybe this isn’t 100% cut and dry but Enjin being in No Man’s Land in exactly the place Rudo falls at exactly the right time is too much of a coincidence. He definitely knew of Rudo’s existence before and he would have recognized 3R upon seeing it, but it’s not clear how he knew to be there when Rudo fell.

This might be because he knows more about Tamsy/the Angel’s true identity than he’s letting on. However, he’s not the second figure that accompanied the Angel on his first visit to Amo (I thought this and checked):

The Angel’s companion has no tattoos, and if this was Enjin the tattoos would be visible. (I guess since the Angel is wearing gloves it COULD be that they switched roles before Tamsy killed Regto but. I don’t think that’s it lol)
