âdonât call me kid, kid.â he crossed his arms and walked towards the bags with a grin. âthank you. really. i have been through a lot, trying to re-connect with my dad. itâs not going so well and the moment he didnât come for my birthday. it made things more empty. i was planning on making things rightâŚâ toby once again patted celeste on the shoulder. âyou have a very bright personality too.â
( celeste : )
Celeste laughed, âThank you.â She pulled the dinner items from her bag. âAre you going to stay? I bought more than enough.â The two of them made short work of putting everything away. âAnd as for your dad,â she bit her lip. âItâs his loss, Toby.â She tilted her head. âSometimes you have to find happiness in a family you choose for yourself.â She huffed and rolled her eyes, âIf I tried to make my mother more maternal Iâd spend my life fighting a losing battle.â
âI want to know why you care.â ( tobias )
Celeste raised an eyebrow and tilted her head. âSelf deprecation doesnât suit you, Tobey. Obviously I care about you.â She grinned. âItâs your sparkling personality. Now help me unpack the groceries so I can make dinner, kid.â

toby felt a searing pain but it calmed as soon as celeste held him. deep breath after deep breath, the clouds kept moving above them. slowly, he reached a point of a happy sadness overcoming his emotions. âi thought⌠for the longest time, i wasnât worth this personâs time. that i was only meant to be a shadow of this personâs greatness, pride and all. yet, he never truly pulled me aside to talk about what i wanted. what i feltâŚÂ â another round of tears fell and this time, he didnât bother to wipe them away. âfor a whole two months, i felt like i was nothing. every effort. every chance⌠wasted.â
âi am something, arenât i? are you proud of where i am? are you happy with me?â toby asked frantically, feeling like a little child looking for various ways of getting validation.Â
âOf course I am,â Celeste answered without pause. The words had slid from her lips before she had time to consider them. Celeste felt tears at the back of her throat. She was ill equipped for this. She wasnât warm enough, wasnât sensitive enough, but her heart ached and she wanted so bad to fix the world for Toby. Her heart squeezed. âIâm surprised you came to me,â she admitted. âBut for what itâs worth...â She pulled away so that Tobias had to look at her. âYouâre amazing. With or without anyone elseâs validation.âÂ

( rowen : )
rowen wouldnât be able to reach her there. sheâd be too far out of reach, a constellation the captain would yearn for as the sun would lay down for rest beneath the sea. â  youâre free here.  â her words were simple, soft even. eyes scanning over the witchâs face, balling her hand into a fist & releasing as she fought the urge to brush her fingers over the soft expanse of skin.
â  iâll make sure yer free here as long as you wish, love.  â a promise, breathed into the cool night air.
rowenâs smile matched celesteâs, heart skipping a beat, breath hitching in her throat. she finally reached up, tucking a stray dark lock from the otherâs face, fingers lingering on her skin.
gaze fell to the tongue over plush lips, mimicking the motion with her own. fingers trailed lazily over sun kissed cheek, brushing over the pink of celesteâs mouth.
mother sea must have been watching out for rowen then as the ship rocked slightly, jolting the captain even closer â their lips mere centimeters away. she was lost in the witchâs beauty & the lure of the sea.
she moved even closer, pressing a soft kiss to the otherâs mouth, eyes falling shut as electric ran through her like a charge.
Celeste gasped against Rowenâs mouth. Her promise lingered in the air above them.Â
Rowen couldnât understand, didnât understand, what waited for Celeste back in England. That despite miles and sea and magic, Celeste was convinced Anne would find her.Â
The soft feel of lips on her own was a sirenâs call against that fear.
Celeste let it drown out everything. After all, the stars wouldnât tell tales, and if Anne dragged her back she would have this moment to clutch to her chest. This moment of freedom beneath the night sky and in the middle of the sea. This moment with someone entirely unexpected.Â
She pushed her mouth against Rowenâs and deepened their kiss.Â
When she pulled away her heart thudded in her ears she couldnât stop the laugh that escaped her lips.Â

( rowen :)
rowen noted the pink tinge to the witchâs cheeks, making her smile grow. if only the ship would hit a wave & send them crashing together. that would be something, wouldnât it ? the pirate allowed herself to ruminate a second on the thought before her attention was brought back to celeste. cassiopeia. right. yes.
so rowen went into it, about the boastful queen that was punished in the sky by poseidon. though her voice was a whisper through the story, finding herself a smidge closer to celeste with each few words spoken. what was she doing ? sheâd already crossed that line ( & got burned for it â literally. ) so she knew to not go to far. so she didnât. simply allowed the slight rock of the boat to make their skin touch at the slightest.
â  i guess i always wondered what could be so bad about being in the sky.  â maybe that sheâd miss the sea too much. or this. right here.
âI think Iâd like to be among the stars,â Celeste answered. The sky was darkening and her eyes felt heavy. The rocking of the boat was lulling her almost like a sip of brandy. She felt a bit braver, a bit more free.Â
âNo one could touch me there,â she closed her eyes. âIâd be out of reach.â
The sea air was fresh and intoxicating. âIâd be free. Truly free. Not just pretending.â
She opened her eyes. Sheâd forgotten how close the pirate was and it made her forget how to breathe for a moment. She held onto that, turned the moment over in her mind like someone sifting for gold.Â
Their arms were still touching and Celeste pressed a bit closer. What was she doing? Her heart thudded so loudly in her chest she was sure Rowen could hear it.Â
She smiled and lazily blinked. When did she start referring to her in her head by name? A few hours together and she was like a lovesick girl. How did the captain manage? How did they get here with only the stars as a witness?Â
Celeste licked her lips and finally took in a breath. She met Rowenâs gaze with her own and wished for a wave.Â

â  well, youâre awfully forward.  â words spoken as thin fingers already were working the button of her jeans, slinking out of them moments after â allowing the fabric to pool at her ankles before she stepped out of it completely. â  my turn â your SHIRT is hideous. it has to go,  â a pause, â  âthatâs the game weâre playing, right ?  â
Celeste smirked. âI told you the first time we met I wasnât patient, so why play with words when I can think of better games to play?â
She watched the other witchâs thin fingers pull the jeans away from her hips and her mouth went dry. It wasnât at all fair that someone should be able to move like that with such a mundane action.
âAlso, I happen to like this shirt.â She unbuttoned the top few buttons and grinned. âBut Iâm not about to argue.â

( rowen : )
rowen let out a soft sigh, eyes closing as she felt the sun saying goodnight, laying to rest for the evening beneath the sea. & she listened. â  a sailor, you say ?  â the captain responded, one eye sliding open to peer at the witch, soft grin forming to her sun reddened face.
the other eye soon popped open, gaze fully focusing on celeste as the red head watched her spin around, small grin blooming into a full blown sun. when was the last time she smiled this wide without alcohol ? she truthfully, couldnât remember. laughter poured from her, head nodding, â  jack struggled putting me to bed often. i learned to sleep when i learned to drink.  â it was the alcohol that would lull her to bed, but never does she fully REST.
soon enough rowen found herself peering down at celeste, brow quirking before she, too, found herself on the ground, elbow to elbow with the much smaller woman, â  what stories would you like to hear ? my favorite is of cassiopeia.  â head turned to the side, gaze studying the witchâs delicate face. she fought the urge to touch it again.
Celesteâs face flushed. The pirate was close. Close enough that if the boat rocked too suddenly their noses might brush...
âIâd like to hear about Cassiopeia,â she said softly.Â
Whispering seemed right in this moment. If she spoke too loudly it might break the fragile magic. The further out to sea they sailed the less Celeste felt Anneâs leash and the more she felt like herself. She wondered if this girl, the one that would lay on a deck with a pirate and listen to tales of the stars, would have been who Celeste was if Anne had never found her.Â
Her plan of proving herself useful seemed secondary to getting Rowen to smile again and she struggled to keep up with the impulses that had her acting before sheâd had the chance to sort out her next move.Â
Her heart pounded and the strange urge to shift closer to Rowen pounded in her chest. What was happening? She was a pirate. A woman pirate. A stranger who could leave her at the next port. There should be no trust strung between them, but Celeste smiled and waited for Rowen to tell her about the stars.Â
( celeste to lucien @kingupontheseaâ )
Celeste smoothed the gold satin of her gown and rolled her shoulders. The white underskirt had a high neckline and her face felt flushed in the warm room.Â
She peered about. Minor nobility and upper class businessmen and their wives floated about like a parody of flowers on the wind. The smell of perfume and cigar smoke was heavy in the salon and her delicate nose nearly stung with the weight of it.Â
She had no interest in being in France. Political unrest was not among her bag of tricks, but her mother had insisted. Although she was no longer among Englandâs nobility, Anne was never far from whatever was brewing between the major European powers. Word of Bonaparte had traveled to their country estate and the former queen of England couldnât resist sending her daughter to find out more about the French statesman.Â
Celeste smiled weakly and nodded at a few of the men crowded at the edge of the room.Â
Helen Elise Tamberly was shy. Or so Celeste assumed. She wasnât sure if the woman even existed, but that was her identity for the evening. Her card had the name emblazoned upon it in gold ink.Â
One of the men approached her and introduced himself. She barely heard his name and the witch exchanged pleasantries like she was sleepwalking. She would go home to England and tell Anne that Bonaparteâs ambitions were exaggerated. She wanted to leave France with her head securely upon her shoulders and playing spy for an undead Anne Boleyn didnât seem like a wise choice to ensure that victory. Â
âLady Helen Tamberly,â she murmured in introduction.Â
Her eyes flicked upward and snagged on a gaze across the room.Â
The man, dark haired and handsome, was looking her way and Celeste found his stare magnetic. Power, old and nearly overwhelming filled the air between them, and she swallowed hard when he began walking toward her.Â

( tobias : )
âi canât force them. they have their own reasons,â his knees felt loose and all of a sudden, his world slowly came crashing as he tugged at celesteâs shirt desperately. âwhy canât i breathe?â he asked, before hitting his head on the concrete. âi shouldnât be⌠i shoulâŚâ he shook his head over and over on the ground. the tears stung and with every wipe, more came to fill its place.
Celeste knelt next to the boy on the concrete and pulled him toward her. âShhh,â she murmured. âBreathe. You have to breathe.â
There was a knife in her throat when she tried to swallow, and beneath it anger was a slow burning ember in her heart. She knew she could let it rage. She could feed it until it was an inferno and she could let it burn the person who hurt Tobias. But she just let it simmer. She knew he was right. They had their reasons, but to watch them break his trust...
She took in a deep breath herself and let her hand trail across his forehead. âI think we need to talk about this.â

( magnolia : )
a hum left magnoliaâs lips, nodding her head softly as another sip was taken of the tea â savoring the taste on her tongue. â  yes, i got it from my mother.  â & no, she was not willing to part with it. whether the trinket had any magical properties or not, the witch wasnât going to allow someone sheâd just met to take it to an employer she knew nothing of. she also had a lot to do with it. figure out what it is. what it does. & why it was so important to morgana all those years ago.
â  & my mother got it from her mother, who got it from her father, & so on & so forth. morgana was the one who stole it from arthur.  â at least, that was the story she was given.
she appreciated celeste trying to cut the tension, allowing herself to breathe for a moment, â  very good. i make new blends every day. seems youâll just have to stop by for a cup daily until you go through them all.  â
The tea was very good. Her compliment was not a hollow one, but Celeste could hear the other womanâs unspoken words. The locket was not for sale and Magnolia was not willing to part with it.Â
Celeste wondered how difficult it would be to steal. She hated to thieve from the younger witch, but returning to Anne empty handed was not an option.Â
Sheâd have to learn where it was and now she had the perfect excuse to stop by and learn more in the meantime.Â
âIâm sorry we couldnât make any sort of deal,â she said smiling. âBut Iâll be in Salem for a few weeks so if you change your mind Iâll be staying at a loft near the Ropes Mansion.âÂ
She stood and let her gaze travel the room. âIâll stop by for another blend tomorrow.â

( magnolia :)
magnolia noted the way celeste paused, choosing her words carefully. EMPLOYER. there had to be more, but the witch wasnât one to pry to early in their relationship. after all, the other witch was a client & ought to be treated as such. prying usually pushed people away sooner than later ( although magnolia was dying to know who exactly this employer was. )Â
the color drained quickly from the witchâs face upon seeing the locket. magnolia knew it â OWNED it. it was passed down generations from witches on her motherâs side. the pretty tale of merlin giving arthur the locket. the part that was left out was morgana getting her hands on it. â  it was given to arthur by merlin,  â magnolia began, swallowing thickly, choosing her own words carefully, â  then morgana le fay got her hands on it. & it was passed down. family to family. mother to daughter. mother to son. father to daughter. untilâŚÂ  â she paused, sighing, â  âuntil it ended up in my hands.  â
however she did smile softly, though it held no emotions that didnât keep her on edge, â  the tea is always good here, surely i hope you come back again.  â
So the other witch DID own the locket. Celeste had observed the color drain from her face. She sipped the tea to give herself a moment.Â
âA family heirloom?â Celeste questioned. If Magnolia had bartered, stolen, or bought the locket she was more likely to be willing to part with it. But if the witch was insinuating that sheâd inherited it...
âAnd as for the tea,â Celeste smiled. âOf course Iâll be back.â She tilted her head and quirked one side of her lips. âIâll need to try some more surprises.âÂ
( magnolia :)
for now. magnolia would keep that in mind, smirk forming to her lips as she slinked alongside the other witch, soft chuckle evading her lips. â  you donât strike me as the type to like surprises,  â she finally stated, brewing the wildberry sage, the aroma filling the space, â  but i guess â hm, all i can say is color me surprised.  â maybe she wasnât as good at reading people as she thought.
two cups in her hands, the witch crossed the room, placing both mugs on a small wooden table, motioning for celeste to have a seat at the worn, leather sofa, â  sit â  â she paused, brows raising skyward a moment, â  â i can tell you donât have a patient bone in your body.  â a sip was taken of her own tea, licking over her lips once more when she placed the mug back down, â  may i ? i might have it â & if i donât, i can probably find a person who can track it down for you.  â
she paused again, her laughter filling the space, â  i truly do not plan to fight you for a locket. seems itâs important to you, so give it here. & weâll see what we can do.  â
Celeste followed the other witch to the sofa. âI like good surprises,â she stressed with a smile. âWildberry sage tea is just the sort of thing that can surprise me whenever it likes.â
She settled into her seat. âBut youâre right. Iâm impatient. Itâs a vice I havenât been able to curb in a very long time.â She sipped the tea. âAnd itâs encouraged by my profession.â She cradled the cup and allowed the warmth to seep into her skin. âMy-â she paused and sighed. âMy employer makes my impatience look like childâs play.â
Celeste slid the sketch of the locket toward the other witch. Oval and silver, it was engraved upon the front with the crest of the Pendragon family. For a moment she allowed herself to worry about what Anne would want with something rumored to rest upon the chest of a legend.Â
âIt is said that it was given to Arthur by Merlin. Iâm sure itâs a pretty tale, and not fact, but my employer wants it and is willing to pay for it. I was lead to you by a few mutual friends. They assured me youâre discreet and talented.â
She smiled. âThey didnât tell me about the tea. I wouldâve been here sooner if Iâd known about that.â
