shy polite smiles, old vinyls playing on a new turntable, iced coffee on a winter day, dress shirts folded at the sleeve, stacks of dusty books, the smell of linen, fingernails bitten into nubs, the sharp click of a mechanical keyboard, freshly ironed sweatshirts, mixtapes, white converse, vanilla candles, multitasking.
heo jin-seok disappeared into novels and stories when he was almost ten years old, just after his older sister went missing to never return home. that type of tragedy rips a family apart from the inside out, though not for lack of trying. the now only child never solved how to be as perfect as a sibling who ceased to exist.
of course, the young, curious mind gravitated towards mystery and horror, the likes of stephen king and goosebumps and agatha christie. the content was a bit too mature for a pre-teen, but as his proud mother stated, he was always mature for his age.
all grown up, jin is now in the same ranks as the authors he looked up to. think james patterson, ruth rendell, gillian flynn. he’s even got a few movie deals set up, which allow him to live comfortably enough in his small two-bedroom in pleasant ridge, struggling to write up the next big hit.
jin only came to sleepy peaks to escape from his life in california. he never liked the heat much, but more than that, a messy divorce was enough to drive him to town, all on the basis that he liked its name.
discovering your wife of four years cheating is enough to drive anyone crazy, but jin likes to think he’s doing okay. for now, he’s just waiting for the next inspiration to strike, putting off his stack of divorce paperwork.
