The gray sky darkened as a few drops of rain slipped through the clouds. It was as if the weather could feel the rising emotions of sadness and pain coming from the pair. The green-clad hero cradled the other with a sense of panic while the young woman conveyed an expression of peace twinged with pain.
“Don’t worry Y/N. We just need to find someone to help you.” The urgency to find help was clear in Deku’s voice, but you cut him off before he could continue.
“You’re so warm Izuku. There’s no point in finding help we both know that I’m dy-” Y/N started before he interrupted her.
“Stop! You’ll be okay. You’re not going to die. But I have to get you out of here before the rain gives you an infection.” Y/N could hear a slight wobble at those words mixed with a slight tone of anger, but instead of retorting back with a clever quip, she remained quiet.
After a moment, she spoke up again. “The rain won’t hurt me now Izu. I can barely feel anything.” The way she spoke about her injuries so calmly was even more worrying and Deku quickened his pace. “But it’ll be ok, you have Uraraka-chan and all of your friends that love you so much that you won’t need me.”
“STOP! Just stop it! I know I have them all, but none of them are you. You’re my best friend, you being gone will never be okay.” The green haired man had tears freely flowing down his face and Y/N could hardly tell the difference between his tears and the rain. “You won’t be there to make me laugh or smile. Angry and sad. There won’t be a point to anything anymore.”
He continued his hurried gait but due to his immense crying, he tripped and dropped his fellow hero. You rolled a few feet away and he scrambled to pick you up again and resume his search, but his own injuries prevented him from doing so. Deku crawled over to you.
“You call me a hero but how can I be one if I can’t even save you.” Y/N’s eyes widened as she began to comfort the broken man.
“You were my hero not because you could or couldn’t save me. You were my hero because you were my friend. The most perfect friend I could ever ask for. And maybe in another life, things would have been different for us.”
Izuku desperately wished she wouldn’t say the words that would ruin him forever but he sat there knowing her time was short and let her say her piece. Y/N grabbed his hand before continuing.
“In another life, you wouldn’t have been quirkless. In another life, I wouldn’t be an orphan that no one wanted. Life wasn’t worth living until I met you. The scared, little green-haired boy that brushed his own tears away so that he could help me with a smile find my way back home.” Her grasp tightened weakly as she blinked away her own tears with a meek laugh at the memory. “But you changed everything. You gave me everything I ever wanted. Friendship. A family. Love.”
Izuku began to cry even harder, if that was even possible. But the Y/H/C girl was not yet done with her speech.
“And in another life,” She offered with a sad, gentle smile. “I would have fought harder for you. I wouldn’t have helped Uraraka-chan ask you out. I wouldn’t have let so many words I wanted to say to you die in my throat.”
“Why didn’t you say anything sooner?” Deku cried, his anguish echoing of the ruins and rubble.
“Because I was scared. I was so scared I would lose the friendship that meant the world to me. So I pushed my feelings down to spare everyone else's.” Y/N looked up at the rainclouds before glancing back to Izuku with tears falling like the rain she was so glad she was able to see before she died.
“”Did you know? The day we met, it was raining? So I’m glad that it ends like this. I met you in the rain, and I get to say goodbye in the rain.”
It hurt the green-eyed man to see his friend concede without a fight. It hurt to see his best friend that was so usually filled with energy, lie there listlessly. “But this isn’t goodbye. Just as soon as we find someone with a healing quirk, it will be all better. Everything will be ok.”
“Izuku. I wouldn’t have said all this if I knew I was never going to be able to say it. This really is it.” Y/N’s voice was growing weaker by the second and they both knew that her time was short. “You really did keep true to your word all those years ago. You did help me find my way home. Deku, you are my favorite hero. Thank you for giving me everything. I love you more than you could ever know.”
Her voice stopped and Izuku didn’t have to look at her to know that it was over. He would never hear from her again. Never see her again.
The rain stopped and as if the world was mocking him, Deku’s fellow Pro-heros were running toward him. He laughed at the terrible irony and clenched his best friend’s hand before the exhaustion he was keeping at bay finally caught up to him.
